Whether it was a 2600n or a 3600n, I wouldn't know whether it would work for sure without looking at the box it comes in, or finding info on line.

I don't know whether you can make that URL work, but you could get there the same way I did.

What I found out there by looking at "technical specifications" is that there is no reason to believe it would work. Nothing about it doing PostScript, which is the key thing for me. Worse yet, maybe, is the line

Printer Features Host-based

I take that to mean that everything is done from an .exe program installed on a PC, although I could most certainly be wrong.

It sounds very risky to me.

I remember having to find an appropriate PPD file to use it with PageStream (HP_Color_LaserJet_2605.ppd 69019bytes) but I don't remember exactly why. Everything else seems to be able to access it by virtue of Printer preferences, Printer device unit: Unit 0 (no name), Printer driver: PostScript, Port device: usbprinter.device, Port unit: 0.

I hope this is all you need.

I've messed with Python a wee bit. I use my biggest script so far (125 lines) regularly to add photo albums to my hike albums pages, and a small one to change "?," "`," etc. to the unicode for the proper symbols in Hawaiian place names in those albums.

But I really don't know how to use it--it's pulling teeth every time I start a project, and spending a lot of time in Python-Docs-2.5. If I don't want to hurt my brain, I use ARexx.

I saw your reply about CJK scripts to Elwood belatedly today, but don't quite understand.

I went to http://www.mojikyo.org/ for an experiment and except for the hand-drawn characters, everything is "?" in little diamonds.

I just happened to have an older icudata.owb (8913240 bytes), so I replaced the new one, rebooted OS4.1, and mojikyo.org still comes out "?????"

The coding seems in fact to be UTF8; wasn't that supposed to work with either version of icudata.owb?

I've been using AmiCygnix (Sylpheed, NetSurf) when necessary to read CJK, but it would be great to be able to do some from OWB on Workbench proper!

I am unaware of an IME for the Amiga side (including AmiCygnix). Whenever I need to do much Japanese, I boot up Lenny. That used to be every day, but it's probably down to less than once a week now, thanks to AmiCygnix's programs at least allowing me to read CJK.

But I can write Chinese characters in Sylpheed by first writing them with AbiWord (easier than with Character Map, for some reason) and then copying and pasting.

Not much fun poking through several thousand characters--fortunately they are in order--, but about 12 years ago I wrote a sort of "pseudo-IME" on my A2K which allowed me to type in Japanese words and convert them to JIS code. I'm now thinking of rewriting that for Unicode.

Cygnix:CygnixPPC/share/fonts/truetype contains 40 files, including fonts.cache-1; 21 flavors of DejaVu, ten of Vera , and eight of Free. Meanwhile Sys:Fonts/_TrueType contains 109 files, no Free included. I must have messed up installation somehow. But I can call up a number of TrueType font files with either Character Map or AbiWord that aren't in CygnixPPC/Share/fonts, but are in Sys:fonts/_TrueType...

I'm curious about fonts in AmiCygnix.

There's a Character Map in Accessories, with strange fonts for languages I've never heard of, like Gujarati and Gurmukhi. It has thousands of Chinese characters (how does one find the one he wants, I wonder) and both Japanese kanas. But there's no Korean.

I've poked around a bit in AmiCygnix, and have found at least two drawers called "fonts/," but nothing with the kind of files I imagine would be necessary for all Character Map can do.

A couple days ago, I wanted to make a document with AbiWord. It was an invoice, so I wanted to have numbers lined up vertically. I looked for a non-proportional font but found none in the rather short list of available fonts, so I ended up using FinalWriter (and Courier) after all.

But surely there is a way to add fonts to AbiWord? And possibly to "Character Map?

Is there a way to access the menus in Sylpheed?

With most programs, if the menu bar has underlined letters, typing the letter while pressing Alt will open the menu, but that doesn't work with Sylpheed on my machine.

Do I need to set something? Perhaps key bindings to something other than default?

Being fairly demented with age, it took me several attempts before I found and selected all the right options, but the FontForge treatment finally worked!

Added later: I did that experiment, comparing only so far as to note that the PageStream file for one page containing the word "cinema" was 55013 bytes long, while the AbiWord file with "CINEMA" (only upper case available) was only 4237 bytes.

So I AbiWorded another file with "cinema" in TimesNewRoman and it came out at 9566 bytes. So I compared the two AbiWord files, and found no real differences that I could see. The TimesNewRoman was longer presumably only because the font bitmap contains more characters. However, the PageStream bitmap is 16067 bytes while the AbiWord one is only 1846 bytes.)

I was playing with AbiWord today, newly installed.

It has a few fonts I've never seen or heard of before; I thought it would make sense to print out samples, typing the font name in the given font.

Went well enough through all the more or less standard fonts, then Kochi Gothic, Notepad, Morpheus, and Grunge. But when I added Cinema to the list, neither my printer nor AmiGS would have anything to do with it: "Unknown error."

It displays fine in AbiWord, and also in System/TypeManager. I wonder why it won't print? Not that I see myself wanting to really use Cinema any time soon.

Incidentally, PageStream5 handles Cinema just fine, from edit screen to paper.
