Re: Doesn't Seem to be Any Programing Languages for AOS4 for the Average Person

The number of languages listed above that can be found on OS4depot refutes this statement.

The Amiga OS 4.x SDK is C focused, does it have ASM includes included now ?

Quote:

Where do you get that from? You can write code that runs on OS1,2,3 or 4, but obviously won't be able to use features added by a later version if you want it to run on a previous version.

I get it from facts and asking OS4 developers to port to OS3.x.

The common reply is :

Im sorry OS4.1 source uses a library structure or OS4.1 only commands and it wont be possible to port to Amiga OS3.x.

This and the statements, OS4.1 is the future, everything else is obsolete, this is the direction Amiga is going...

Reality is not compatible to Amiga OS 3.x.

Note. Im not questioning the reasoning behind the decision for AmigaOS 4.1 only code/progs.

Stating the reality as it is now.

You may call it 'progress' its also called incompatibility.

Quote:

AmigaOS, MorphOS and AROS all have different people with different ideas leading them and moving them forwards, so although they all share a common ancestry, it is inevitable that it will become more and more difficult to maintain cross-compatibility whilst using the latest features of each OS. Again, that's progress.

Where there is a will there is a way.

Looks a bit like Amiga Linux. Is this where we are heading ? Dilution, fragmentation. looks rosy. I must be wrong then. I am worried about stupid things.

Everything is fine.

Developers are doing great. keep up the good work.

that is because it is impossible, impracticable and is not a amiga specific problem.

I dont think it is impossible.
Impractible ? Dont think so. Until all Amiga users have a SAM/PPC based machine then maybe.

How long do you think it will take for all Amiga users to get a SAM ? a year ? 2 years ?

Assuming SAM is still here in 2 years and no new hardware is released.

Not an Amiga specific problem ? R you joking ?

Do you think new users who want to program for Amiga will only rely on the OS4.x SDK documentation ?

Im sure new users will rely on the thousands of code/documentation on Aminet / Internet.

Unless you know somebody going to update all the code / docs... good luck.

@Atheist

Amiga development is a joke. Sorry to say this.

Amiga OS 4.x
- C only, no ide,no compatibility w/ OS3

AmigaOS 3.x
- C - hard to set up headers, OS 3 only
- ASM old tools, hardware banging
- basic old tools, hardware banging

No open source GFX library to support different systems / RTG.

Its time for an open source SDK developer suite thats compatible with most systems.

At present AmigaE/PortableE is compatible across Amigas, but GFX/SND portability (open source) is not available.

NO Developer suite, that compiles ASM/C/Basic for classic AmigaOS 3.x / 4.x/ AROS/Amikit.

The ULTIMATE Amiga compatible / portable developer suite.

This will make Amiga popular again.

PowerPacker source code?

Just popping in

I was looking for a powerpacker decrunch program for Windows, but could not find any website that provided information abot the .pp file format.

It seems the well known Amiga packer knowledge is to be forgotten forever .. until..

I found some source files for PowerPacker :

ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/amiga/fish/501-600/ff561/

The PPlib.lha has some source code, but I do not know if it has enough information.

It would be great if Powepacker support was in most major archive/packer programs.

Long live PowerPacker !

Post offices are very busy at this time.

I suggest here in UK you request SPECIAL DELIVERY to divert from the normal mail traffic in postal system.

Last day Posting for UK is 20/Dec/08
Last day Special Delivery for UK is 23/Dec/08

Edit: as 20th is a Saturday, I strongly advise post a day before, as weekend service is SLOW.

@nbache

Interesting. Is it possible to boot off the cd then load the image, decompressing to ram for a live cd.

But if someone wants to install to harddrive, decompress to the harddrive ?

We really should try aim for the same experience and a recomended drive listed on retail stores - all the same model.

just some thoughts...

@all others

Thanks for the answers. I just wanted to know why the differences in install times for people.

Have there been any non Amigan reviews of SAM / OS 4 yet ?

Would be good to see.

@RacerX

I install windows XP when I need to :) like I said via true image ghost.

I can get my system up in 5 mins for a 20 GB ghost Image.

10 mins if I want to validate.

I guess you havent used imaging software.

@alexw

Looks like a good program.

Would you consider the following features :

MD5 hash check / validation

download / upload 'good bits' of failed download/server error, not all file if can be avoided.

search / sort feature, eg name, version, developer, OS

star system for popularity / top ten / voting system

and for developers access to source (which should be a must in os4depot - incase something happend to the developer and the code is lost).

As you can see with Aminet its a mess finding which has source, which has not.

PS: try finding the LHA 68k source code on Aminet ;)

cheers, asy

OS4 Install in 25 mins ?
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi

Just wanted to know why OS 4 install takes 25 mins ?

Why not use disk imaging ?

My 20 GB Acronis True Image image takes 5- 10 mins at most.

Surely imaging an install will be quicker than file-by-file copy ?

Then tweek the setup for networking etc.

just some thoughts :)

Re: Create a programing language

@freddix

Hi

I really like your idea on creating a programming language.

Have you looked at the 68k asm source code for Amos whish is available ?

Could you make a C version for 68k ? EG Amikit ?

The problem right now alot of messing about with C is header files, updating from fd , inlining etc.

If you could recreate Amos Pro to use RTG/AHI/3D is what we need.

Why? Amos is the most stable, easy to get started programming language to this date, in the world, even now 20 years later it still runs without modification and is extendable.

The Amos language is easy to use (the best), interpreter, editor is stable, hast test, formatting of code, code folding.

If your commands are compatible to AMOS, you can run/compile 1000s Amos code !

Command structure in XML would last the test of time.
SDL Basic is fantastic, just slow and buggy. shame.
Make a complete suite with editor that compiles in your basic language !

For example if Amos was written in Amos code we could update it today !

The Amos manual could help :
http://amos.condor.serverpro3.com/index.php?page=7

Under MSX basic source code: MSX basic source code
http://msx.retro8bits.com/msxsw.html

Please make it OS 3.x compatible, for all Amigas.
Right now GCC/SDL is most compatible C language.
Your basic language depends what is most important to you: speed/os compatibility/game dev/app dev/future proof/portability/scripting/

get the design right :)

look at other languages and ask what is good/bad. why it has survived or not.

If Amiga had one universal basic programming language - what a joy that would be !

good luck

Very nice. how much memory does Netsurf use ?

Is Netsurf modular ?

How can one implement html/CSS datatype ?

Would the datatype system need upgrading to support HTML, CSS, Javascript, IRC etc ?

@orgin

This website has alot of coding info, which also has a gcc hard disk file for Winuae :

http://amiga.sourceforge.net/amigadevhelp/

I use the hard disk image, but some of the programs are old, lack of examples and lack of tutorials.

But it is a working suite that is impressive.

We also need to add AmosPro

And AmiBlitz 3 has a good editor
http://amiblitz3.amiforce.de

Its a shame no one is working together to create an upto date suite with the most popular languages.

A community driven project, which I dont mind help.

Re: Amiga Visual Recording Software?

@Mikey_C

I have been asking for software for Amiga that is similar, but records all user events that can be 'played' by other users.

A lot of games have this to show how to play a game, unfortunately it is next to impossible to record other application events.

This is a fantastic opportunity to create user manuals, demos, tutorials etc and should be available for Amiga.

New users come to Amiga using WinUAE and Amikit, but dont now what all the software does !

Recording user actions would be much smaller than AVI, and also introduce automation for repetitive tasks.

If someone does have the talent to create such software, im sure recording to AVI wont be a problem.

WinUAE saves as AVI

From my experience keep away from LiteOn drives, drives manufactured in Japan are mostly reliable.

I buy NEC for pc and ASUS are getting good reviews at cdfreaks. dunno how compatible on Amigas.
