Curiosities From Seat-of-the-Pants Research

I was following hunches in researching an entry in my log files from yesterday and eventually discovered two curiosities: 1) Someone in the ?sleepy? Washington, DC suburb of Reston, Virginia, USA actually looked up my domain on their cell phone (Is it possible I actually have a fan out there? I mean, if they're even looking on their cell phone, that's pretty serious ) 2) Professional Newspaper organizations don't always have a clue when it comes to font practices. I downloaded a one page PDF from a DC newspaper, and they had actually embedded 30 fonts in that one page PDF. I also might have discovered the reason behind the moral and mental ineptitude of Washington, DC. Perhaps they all go to visit Reston and contract Mental Ebola, and their brains melt.

I first spotted them across the river, and I said to myself, ?Man, I wish they would come this way!? since I had my camera with me. Well, they did! The Mississippi River is about a half mile wide at the point where I was, and even at that distance I could easily see the extent of their wings. The bottom shot is with them passing maybe about 100 feet above me with the camera zoomed in as far as it would go. It only does 3x zoom.

@Atheist
People are very fond of using statistical obfuscation to make it appear as if it is very likely that there are other corporeal, intelligent species outside of earth, but when it is genuinely investigated without preconcieved notions it is discovered that the real odds are about a billion to one AGAINST there being even one corporeal, intelligent species in the universe. The fact that we are here is such an incredible bucking of the odds that it would be like placing a 1 inch square target on the far side of the universe, 20 BILLION light years away, then hitting it BULLSEYE on the first shot.
In all likelihood, there are no other corporeal intelligent species outside of earth at all.

@Mikey_C Very cool, Mikey! I even discovered independent proof for all those who have called me paranoid for thinking my site has been hacked in the past. They even have a page from my old WordPress based weblog. I thought that was completely gone.

Taken from http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070228/D8NID2J81.html, an analyst gives an interesting quote while attributing the intent to MicroSoft: "what he's trying to say is that even though we are behind, we are not going to necessarily copy a model that's out there." If only that would ever be true of MicroSoft.

Keeping in mind that I have no money right now, if what has been brought up against Sony so far is the best they can do (I really cannot be disappointed when a non-Christian company based in a non-Christian nation, looking only at the bottom line, puts out a movie that promotes bad theology, but I can be offended by a company based in a nation that has laws against bigoted behavior by corporate entities that nevertheless exhibits bigoted behavior, such as HP), I really cannot sustain an objection against Sony hardware.

@Valiant About 1990, when I bought an A1000 from a neighbor. I opened up all of the opportunities and experience and accomplishments that I have ever had in computing by buying an old, used machine that had been in a closet.

@MikeB
I love the idea of having OS4 on the product of a company the size of Sony or some other large corporation, if only for the reason that obsessed rivals with zero concept of ethics would get squashed like a grape under the heel of a megasaurus.
What bothers me is the claim of a lack of ethics on Sony's part. I'd like to hear more about that. If the situation were on a par with HP's treatment of their Christian employees (going to court to silence Christian employees while allowing anti-Christian points of view to be openly spouted by their other employees) then I wouldn't buy one even if I did have the money/income to justify such a purchase, but I suspect that it is quite a bit less serious than that.
Even in this day and age, I wonder how many of us remaining have a Job-like tenaciousness when it comes to our integrity. Is an OS really worth so much that we would compromise our integrity in order to deal with wicked people on terms dictated by those wicked people simply because they are financially successful? There are other hardware vendors, but your integrity depends solely upon you. Once it has been polluted by compromise, can it then be purified at no, or even little, cost?
I want OS4 as much as anyone, but I want Jesus more. To non-Christians that might read, I want OS4 as much as anyone, but I want my integrity more.

Amazing Grace. I just got back home from seeing the movie about the battles fought?and eventually won?by William Wilberforce to end the slave trade in the British Empire during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Other than Albert Finney, who plays John Newton, I had not heard of any of the players before. That being said, however, the movie was absolutely superb, moving me near to, or completely to tears several times. The finale rendition of the hymn itself was particularly moving. Sadly, there are more slaves in the world today than there ever were during Wilberforce's lifetime. The war is not over, not yet won; and in the same way that Wilberforce fought, so need we to fight today.

While I have heard the name of the band, I must confess to never having heard their output, as well as to not knowing who were/are members.

The following was forwarded to me in email. YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2007 when... 1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave. 2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years. 3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3. 4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you. 5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses. 6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries. 7 Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen. 8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it. 10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee. 11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : ) 12. You're reading this and nodding and laughing. 13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message. 14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list. 15. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list AND NOW YOU ARE LAUGHING at yourself.
