As a last resort due the lack of a proper terminal for aos4, i installed cygnix as i had read about the new ability to run apps standalone in a wb window.
It was a long time since i tried amicygnix and i was pleasantly surprized!
It seems a lot faster now! Running apps standalone works nicely too!

... but ... i can't find any terminal in amicygnix? is there none?
is it planned? any eta?

Good to hear, that you enjoy AmiCygnix
Unfortunately there is no terminal available for AmiCygnix. I was not able so far to make one working. Maybe I try it again, when I've released my programs waiting in the pipeline. Please use the Amiga (+ sh) shell for now.

Isn't there gimp 2.8 by now? Or are there things that prevent that version from being ported?

Yes, there is 2.8 out, but currently I only have 2.6. It was hard work and needed a lot of time (months, if you add the development time of the dependencies).
For 2.8 some dependencies are missing. They are not too difficult to solve, but the main reason for releasing 2.6 first is, that I expect 2.8 will be too slow for current OS4 systems. It depends much on GEGL. In parts 2.6 has also support for that and it is dead slow.

Oh, and are you capable of fixing the problems with the canon canoscan lide 110/200 not working? Or are there newer versions of xsane backgroudn that fixes these issues?

Oh, waiting for next release.

There is a new version of the backends available (1.0.23). When I have some time, I will give it a try. Maybe it works with this version. But I'm afraid, I can't fix it without having a Lide 110/200 here.

Uuh - did you have serious problems?

Any chance to see some 2D hardware acceleration based on the new AmigaOS4 compositing functions?

The chances are low, sorry

p.s. I too would love Gimp 2.8 because of its ability to work in a single window mode. Sadly it relies on GTK 2.6 and I believe Edgar is going to release (from the AmiCygnix readme) "Support of programs compiled for GTK+ 2.24 and GTK+ 3.x".

As said above, Gimp 2.8 is possible but maybe unusable. Gimp 2.6 will be released first.

P.S.
A year and a half has passed since your release of AAMP native for OS4.
Are you ready for a package update, maybe with another bounty?
The AAMP package has MySQL release 5.1.35 and PHP 5.2.10.
MySQL is today at release 5.5.28 and PHP at 5.4.8.

I would like to make an update, but I need all my free time for AmiCygnix. Because of some serious problems with the base package, I have to release another update (nearly done). Afterwards several applications are waiting for a release: Gimp 2.6, AbiWord 2.8, Gnumeric 1.10, Audacious, uGet... . Most of them are large packages so I will busy for the next months.

I wonder why Amicygnix is located in the Network/Misc section.
Maybe moving it to Emulation/Misc is better or into a new Emulation/X11 section.

Just a thought...

It was hard to decide, in which category I should place AmiCygnix. Nothing really fits.
The most important part of AmiCygnix is the X server. Every AmiCygnix program with a GUI connects to this server and so it is a X client. A client can also connect to a X server on a remote machine, which shows the nature of this system more clearly. For the complete data transfer between server and client the network is used.
For this reason I put it into the network category.

(And as orgin said, it is not an emulator )

@kilaueabart

As Chris said, you need the libusb.library in LIBS:. It must be version V 0.1.12 or better. Please check the XSane archive, directory "install-data/Libs".

Hmm - what do you mean? With AmiCygnix 1.1 you should be able to run an app in a workbench window using the "picasso96wb" display driver. The "picasso96pip" driver for overlay windows does still not work - that's true. But this is an issue of the OS. Hyperion is working on that.

Nice to hear you're still working on improvements. But what speed improvements are we talking about?
The only real annoying thing is the slow window moving. Then again i've only tried gimp and xsane. So n o idea how other programs behave. But offcourse all speed improvemts are very welcome.

Of course I want to improve the whole performance and especially the window movement .

Any plans for an updated X server if any are available. Or won't it help?

The version of my X11 port is 6.3 and the current version is 7.5. I like to port a newer version, because I need some new features to have the chance to increase the performance. But my time is limited.
The keyboard problem could be solved also with V6.3. But I cannot promise, that it will be solved in the next AmiCygnix update. It has low priority for me.

Also have you any plans to update gimp to latest release?

I have Gimp 2.6.11 here and it is fully working. But before I can publish it, I have to finish my update package for AmiCygnix. It will not work without it.

Any updates available for xsane package?

Sorry, no. I think I will wait for the next update of the sane backends.

Hi all,
I have a rather annoying problem under amicygnix : when using Gnumeric or Abiworld, I can only scroll with the mouse, which is very slow and the up/down keys (not the four arrows keys) dont work.

Is there a way to active these globally ?
thx
Lio

This is a problem of the X server. The keyboard support is not completely implemented. I see no way to enable this with the current server, sorry.

@ Thematic

Basically this is a path conversion problem - lxpanel seems to mix up an amiga style and an Unix style path. Although this is a bug in lxpanel, the reason is mostly a broken AmiCygnix installation (the program is searching for something, that doen't exist). It's hard to say, what it is. The file ".Xdefaults" doen't exist in a standard AmiCygnix installation. Maybe a directory in the search path is missing.
I suggest to use "Snoopy" to test this.

What is it exactly?

And is there a list of the applications you can run?

Thanks!

A list of all applications you can find here:

http://www.schwan-clan.de/amiga/AmiCygnix.html

To AmiCygnix: As gerograph explained, AmiCygnix is NOT an Emulator! All programs are running natively on OS4, but the programs are using some Unix technologies. The main part is the X server for the gfx stuff, process communication and other things. Other parts are implemented by libraries like Glib and GTK. And all this is based on the OS4 network software, the TCP/IP stack "Roadshow".

We must be careful with the term "native". As explained above, AmiCygnix programs do not use the Amiga message system for communication, they use sockets. If this is not native for someone, he can't call sockets native too.

AmiCygnix does NOT deeply depend on the abc-shell! All programs can run without it! The Unix shell is important for development and for a bit more unix compatibility while launching the programs.

It's never a good idea to overwrite the original file, especially if you make batch processing.

I read somewhere on aw.net that amicygnix can be run on workbench with windows, instead of launching the amicygnix desktop. But there are bugs masking it unusable after update 1. Does anyone have a screenshot of this window mode in action, and will this issue be fixed any time soon?

Since Update 1 the support of PIP windows with pixel format "R5G6B5" ist broken. Because of this you get wrong colors, when you use the AmiCygnix PIP driver.

The problem is reported to the OS4 developer team / Steven Solie, but it seems, that it is not solved yet.

BTW: You cannot make a snapshot of a PIP window, the content would be black. But here is a snapshot of a new (and very alpha) workbench window driver:

Resized Image

So just to say it clear: Still the complete desktop is displayed in this window.

There is no phpMyAdmin in AAMP, but there is an example settings file in

I guess, that the libraries "sysvipc.library" and "threads.library" are missing on your new system (LIBS:). Please copy them from your old system to the new installation.
