Re: OS4 Classic remake

@Alkaron

Ok, so it isn't sure its rtl8029 at all.. well, i changed the topic of this thread back to its original to reflect this.

Nevertheless i'm working on an improved version of rtl8029.device which will hopefully make it for the next OS update.

@Alkaron

Ok, while the logs are unfortunately useless, just to be sure: The lockups only occurr if you're using rtl8029.device?

If so, there is probably something which makes rtl8029.device stay in its interrupt handler.. which would explain the described behaviour but which would also be very weird as there are other reports of beta testers that rtl8029 is working fine..

In any case, i'm working on it.. there are some issues left i have to resolve and considering my limited time it can take a while. Sorry.

@Alkaron

Please try what ZeroG suggested, maybe there is something in the log which could help.

Other than that i can't help you now. I'll try to reproduce your problem with some of the betatesters and hopefully fix it. But please note: i'm only the developer/maintainer of those drivers, if and when they will be released as an update or something isn't up to me, but of course i'll try to find a way.

So i have to ask you for yet a little bit more patience..

Are you using the updated drivers? The original CD had faulty network drivers on it (was my fault, sorry) but there was a quick update shortly after release with updated drivers. I think it's available at Hyperions website in the restricted area.

@agafaster

Just as a side note: As soon as you want to try to compile a "bit" more
complex things than HelloWorld.cpp you might want to raise the
stack of your shell noticable .. default is 32k which is way too
less for GCC compiling C++ stuff .. i have it set to 5MB per default
(stack 5000000) and even that's sometimes too less..

Just to warn you, because i also often bitched about GCC crashing on
C++ sources where the cause simply was a too small stack.

Re: AOS4.1, Pricey?
Just popping in
Just popping in

@Atheist

While just starring at the pure numbers it might look pricey, of course it
isn't!

Being a member of the OS4 dev team I can assure you and anyone
else that many people have done an incredible amount of work on
OS4.1 since release of the last 4.0 update.

I saw many cry about too less new features, but all of them don't
know how much effort was needed to get some of those features
working or how many bugfixes (from simple to highly complex) were
made in the meantime. And just have a look at the feature list of 4.1:
There are really incredible new features.. JXFS is the best filesystem
available for AmigaOS since ever, we get hardware accelerated
compositing which opens the world not only to eyecandy but to many
other serious things, the most powerfull DOS since its first version
(64bit, notifications, etc.), we get a real Cairo port which is needed
for almost every application the users are crying for since ages
(e.g. Firefox), etc. etc. etc.

And last not least: nobody should forget there are only a handfull of
Amiga users left, so you can't just make it extremely cheap and get
your revenue out of the pure quantity of sales.

So i would like to invite every doubter to visit one of the upcoming
events where OS4.1 will be shown in action (e.g. Pianeta or Colmar)
and i would highly recommend to have enough money in the wallet
to buy OS4.1 straight on that event as i'm certain OS4.1 will covince
90% of those doubter.. (the other 10% being the trolls who just can't
even get convinced about the sky being blue )

@AmiGame

Nice.. i'd wish i could do more (14k yesterday), but since some time i'm away from home and can't use my Amigas and PS3 for crunching... so only my 2 Linux servers (1 dual core Opteron and one small Sempron) crunch 24/7 and my notebook whenever i'm using it ..

@AmigaPapst

ATM we just make a bit over 400k a day.. Free-DC (which overtook us some days ago) make over 1.4m a day! Team Warped which is one rank behind us makes almost 600k a day.. so if all the other Amigans out there don't start crunching dnetc or if none of you could capture the machines of a university we probably won't ever get any rank back but loose even more ranks

@Swisso

I'm also crunching whenever my Amigas are running.. and i'm also a bit cheating because my 2 Linux boxes are also crunching for Team Amiga

Well, seems it doesn't help much .. i lost a lot of places recently and it seem tomorrow Team Amiga will lose one place again (Free-DC)

Well, impressive list.. at least now we know where you spend all your money

Oh BTW: My Saturn and DreamCast lists would be even longer than yours .. but i would certainly loose with Amiga (maybe 100 or 200, mainly adventures) and PS3 (only around 10.. ) :-p

Are their ways (besides installing SFS) to speed up the system?

Besides using SFS on many partitions, you maybe want to keep FFS2. In this case, you should have a look at "fs_plugin_cache" .. IIRC located in SYS:System/
With that little helper you can specify a cache size for a FFS2 partition, which improves also FFS2 speed quite a bit.

Oh, then of course use decent block sizes for FFS2 .. e.g. if you have a partition where you mostly store bigger files (MP3, movies, etc.) raise the block size to e.g. 2048 .. this means on the one side a little loss of space for smaller files, but increases performance on bigger files.

Then you can change the buffers used for ASyncWB .. should be a tooltype in the icon .. the default buffers are way too small.. if you set it to bigger values (64k or 128k maybe) it should greatly speed up workbench copying operations and stuff.. (the CLI copy command also has a BUFFER option for that). Make some tests to find the best setting. Just make sure the buffers are powers of two.. i.e. for 64k not 64000, but 64 x 1024 = 65536

If you have network issues (e.g. the Amiga is far slower on downloading than a PC or Mac from the same server) check your Roadshow settings.. you can e.g. set the receive buffer up to 64k and a bunch of other stuff via ENV vars or on the fly with c:roadshowcontrol. I'm not in front of my A1 for the next time, so i can't tell you good settings for other stuff.. sorry.

There are probably other speed up possibilities as well, but that are the ones i could instantly think of

Re: New Network Card and perhaps Modem?
Just popping in

@Slayer

Regarding my rtl81x9.device and the supported cards: The best bet would be a 8139 non-C+ (i.e. A, B or D) card (100Mbit).. C+ *should* also work, but isn't confirmed yet.

8169 (i.e. 1000Mbit) does also work, but isn't that much faster than a 8139 .. i tried to track the issues down, but so far, i didn't have success and i'm almost convinced that it actually isn't an issue with my driver, but more with Roadshow (or it's settings) or even with the hardware not being able to handle enough interrupts per second..

Oh, and the version on os4depot is a real old one.. for some reasons i can't go deeper into right now, i won't update it anymore (but it works basically anyway).

Anyway.. as said: Get yourself a Realtek 8139 100Mbit card.. most cheap card brands out there (MCab, Conceptronic, equip, etc. for example) are using Realtek chips..

@Antique

Since the prices are IMHO far too high for BlueRay movies (usually 20-30 Euro here in Germany) i only own two up to now:

- 300 (a MUST-HAVE!! )
- Kingdom of Heaven

If prices would go around 10 Euro down, i'd surely buy more.. until then, i'm still fine with DVD..

Surely nothing to be added in 1.x, but maybe for v2:

- SFTP support (can be achieved through openssh, just like pFTP does it)
- SCP support (also through openssh)

If FTPmount would get this, it would become extremely usefull for me
