Monitor problem
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I have a strange problem with my new 20" wide screen monitor (LG). Its native resolution is 1680x1050. Sometimes the monitor recognizes the resolution correctly but sometimes it recognizes it as 1280x1024 (WB settings not changed). It might get this wrong if I switch between screens (Amigas screens), when screen saver is used, I have to boot, I watch a video file (with different screen mode) or anything. It might get it correct when I switch between DVI and VGA connector and back (button in monitor) or I use ScreenMode.prefs to change between two different modes (and back).

Is this OS4 driver problem or is this common problem with new monitors or is this just bad luck ? I use VGA connector (obviously). (The problem is same with both Radeon 7000 and 9200.)

Is it possible to change other settings from monitor driver tooltypes and not only vertical (?) sync ? I think Picasso96mode(.prefs) is useless. I couldn't make it to work. (I think it's from 80's, best to use with old CRTs and OCS/ECS/AGA chipsets only.)

@Jack

Get these "VSYNCMIN", "VSYNCMAX", "HSYNCMIN" and "HSYNCMAX" values from your monitors manual. The monitor driver is clever. It doesn't let you use invalid screen modes which might break your display. So those values have to be correct ones. (Don't use anyone elses values. Those have nothing to do with gfx card but they're limits of a monitor.)

(tried replacin con: with kcon: in toolypes of sys:system/shell)

I think that should work.

Well I have these in user-startup:
Mount KCON: from DEVS:KingCON-mountlist
Mount KRAW: from DEVS:KingCON-mountlist

And I have these in shell icon tooltypes:
WINDOW=KCON:350/700/800/250/AmigaShell %N.%S/CLOSE
STACK=512000
FROM=S:Shell-Startup

Do you have "KingCON-Handler" in sys:L and "KingCON-mountlist" in sys:Devs ? And those two "mount" lines in user-startup ?

Re: Virtual drawers
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

@mailman

I had one guys Mac lend earlier this year but I never tested that Smart Folders feature. I have only read their marketing stuff http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/finder.

Well VirtualDrawer is mostly the same program as FindMore. FindMore gives you a list of file search results when VirtualDrawer put the search results in a drawer/directory as links. (Maybe I should combine those two programs.) So you don't add files in "virtual drawers" one by one but you use file search mechanisms to easily select bunch of them at one go. ("Smart drawers".) The idea is when you add more files on your hard drive those virtual drawers will be updated too. And virtual drawers are stored on your hard drive.

For example you have three drawers full of pictures you took on your summer vacation in three different years, like SummerPics2005, SummerPics2006 and SummerPics2007. Then you can make a virtual drawer that contains only pictures of your children from all those three years together. And make another one which contains only pictures of your wife from all those years. Then you have still those three original drawers and two other drawers but there's not duplicates of your pictures. Then you add another drawer SummerPics2008 next year and you can update easily (or hopefully automaticly in future) those two virtual drawers to contain also pictures from 2008. So you have multiple choices how to organize your files on your hard drive in different ways.

Another example is if you have a habit to put all your music files in one directory/drawer. You can use VirtualDrawer to organize your music files in different categories by genre or something like that (if those files includes needed information somewhere already).

@mailman

Yes I created and uploaded VirtualDrawer.

Quote:
Recently a tool to create virtual drawers has been uploaded on OS4 Depot. Correct me if I am wrong. This program has the ability to create soft links (similiar to those in Windows). You are clicking on an icon which in fact executes another icon (tool) which is hidden deeper in the directory tree. You may have a drawer on the backdrop of your Workbench full of icons of the programs you are using?

No it's suppose to be more like "Smart folders" in Mac OS X if I have understood correctly what that "Smart folders" does. "Short cut" icons in Winblows is a little bit same as you select "Leave out" from Workbenches Icon menu.

Photoshop. But actually it's a nice idea if I ever will make my own guitar so maybe I could paint it in red and white. (Or maybe not.)

There are many ways Diropus Magellan can execute simple CLI commands (lha, unzip), REXX, and CLI scripts to do many advanced task, by simply dragging and dropping, menus or toolboxes.

Workbench on the other hand is kind of restricted to one tooltype action predefined by deftools prefs and simple copy, rename actions.

But you can put necessary applications on AmiDock and drag and drop any files on the applications icon.

Diropus Magellan is file manager that end up as being a desktop replacement.

I don't think you should call it a clone, it a replacement whit the power of a filemanager.

I wasn't talking about Magellan but something I'm working on myself.

The old system will run in its own address space as a separate task.

I was thinking one day if it's possible to do it something like this way. This sounds good.

I think some of keisangis points are still valid. You can't use GeForce but you can still get Radeon card and use OpenGL with it. But you can't buy or download any filesystem supporting big files at the moment. I think joerg removed SFS2 from his website because of big bugs in it (or something like that). So in a common users point of view one can't use big files. (But I don't know why people would need big files support. Only some image files need it.)

Can anybody tell me what are those so big things in Magellan you people need that don't exist in OS4 WB together with the following commodities: AutoUpdateWB, BenchTrash, RAWBInfo, DefIcons, AsyncWB, AmiDock, ClickToFront, DepthToFront, ContextMenus. And Unarc and Cranu are good enough for me dealing with archives. (I think I'm a simple guy so I need only simple solutions.

(Btw. I'm making my own "WB clone" just for fun and experimenting AOS software development more. I like to know what kind of features people like.)

I'm wondering if somebody with electronic skills could find the battery problem in XEs and make some kind of fix for it.

@LyleHaze

There wasn't many things that was updated in the July update. Can you test them one by one ? (Maybe USB ?) And if I can remember there haven't been any battery problems in MicroA1s (XEs only).

@all

PS. SE doesn't have battery problems.
