Re: Amiga Security Faq

Just popping in

I've been experimenting with ipf because I am quite adept with iptables on Linux.

I also had a great email from the old-skool genuis behind Amithlon Bernd Meyer on whose input the whole section on stack attacks will have to change!

Thank you Bernd.

If anyone is even slightly concerned about attribution don't be please I will do my best to credit every source of information in full. If you aren't happy with how I have reworded your submission I'll revise the FAQ.

Desperately need the Wiki though, isn't there a general Amiga Wiki somewhere I read about started by one of the #amiga.org channel members?

If anyone has a link please post it.

To kick it off:

Flatulence leads US jet to divert

An American Airlines plane made an emergency landing in Nashville after passengers reported the smell of sulphur from burning matches.

The matches were found on the seat of a woman who had attempted to conceal the odour of flatulence with the matches, Nashville airport authorities said.

Can you try out doing a "netstat" or post a list of what is in the "bin" subdirectory of Amitcp:

Help wanted from all Amiga owners

I'm working on completing a first draft of the security FAQ to help new and existing users make the best of a bad job with Amiga online and personal security.

It will be split into two parts:

1. How to secure your Amiga against viruses, exploits and monitor for bad software. General things including backups.

2. How to secure your Amiga when using the internet.

The task is pretty big, and I only have AmigaOS3.9 and AmigaOS4.0 to do it with so I need your help.

What virus checkers do you have? How good are they? What filesystems do you run ( PFS? SFS? ) how good is it?

What about TCP/IP? Who out there runs Miami, NetConnect, AmiTCP etc.

Please post some details about your configuration if you are willing to be ask questions, contribute and be given some commands to run:

Please fill out like this so I can put your details in a database:

Hardware:
Operating System:
Filesystem:
TCP/IP stack:
Browser(s):
Email software:
Chat software:
Virus software:
Do you use PGP with your emails:
Extra info/other software used online:

Together we can make Amiga a bit of a safer hobby for all.

Re: there goes the neighbourhood

I'm not sure that is fair to amiga.org but a few of the more extreme members/moderators with an axe to grind.

But the general air of negativity and intolerance to those who just want to enjoy the hobby without all the politics pervades all the online amiga sites except this one so far.

As long as I have been a lurker online there has been this oppressive atmosphere. From c.s.a.* in the 90s, ANN, Amiga.org in the 2000s etc. The problem isn't the sites it is the people in the community.

But it isn't much different on other platforms if you have ever sat a Linux advocate in the same room as a BSD advocate fur will fly! Arrogance of world view seems to go hand in hand with being a geek.

So what you need is a site with a moderation team firmly but politely keeping out those who just exist for the argument.

I hope amigans.net will achieve this.

X11 kills OS4.0 - help needed
Just popping in
Just popping in

I use vva on OS4 to remote control my unix box that I use for proper secure access to remote sites. This has worked great.

I read recently about a native X11 server for OS4.0 ( Cygnix ) and installed it and ran the X11 server.

It worked OK but for a few small blips:

1. Fonts came up corrupt on Mozilla
2. Fonts came up corrupt on konsole
3. vncviewer came up blank screen

But then it slowed my entire system to a crawl so I had to reboot it. This happenned each time. The only other thing I was running was IBrowse and the slowdown happenned in seconds.

Does anyone know what the problem might be or has experienced a similar error?

I used AmiWinX copied over from my A1200 and that worked just fine ( but slow ) so I know this is nothing hardware related.

I read that thread too and I wasn't surprised at the lack of open mindedness on display there.

The main problem seems to be mental laziness, not actually going to find out for yourself what the site is about and just going off the blackened names of people who are working on the site and the word of other people with an agenda.

Why do places like amiga.org and ( eventually ) amigaworld.net go quiet when the OS4 and Amiga product followers depart to another site?

The answer is simple. Those that cause most of the noise are those who pick the fights. You can't pick a fight with those that agree with you so you have to follow those whose viewpoint differs from yours to the new site. If you can't follow them, you are left to grumble about it and trash the reputation of the place you can't really legitimately join.

It reminds me of the intolerance shown by anti abortionists shown towards sites that discuss abortion on the internet. They constantly flood them simply because their political viewpoint differs. When they get thrown out, they grumble, get bitter and work out ways of getting back in. This also happens the other way around of course, there are militant athiests out there who can't tolerate religious discussion boards.

Why don't people leave other people alone whose choices differ from theirs? I don't get it and I don't understand why the people that engage in it can't see how arrogant they are being.

I wouldn't put up with a neighbours TV drowing out conversations in my house, why should I have to put up with the same on the internet?

If this place gets trashed by those who just want to argument and berate people into changing their viewpoint to match theirs then I'll just move on somewhere else.

I don't see anything wrong with that, I have my viewpoint, I respect their right to have theirs and I don't go on sites that don't have the same perspective as me and have a pop at everyone who doesn't agree with me.

I'm sorry if this goes close to breaking the Terms Of Service but I think the internet brings out the worst in people, especially if they are arrogant, especially if they like an argument without consequences and especially if they like to bully people into agreeing with them. I think it is a mental illness. Megalomania?

No, it was a legit question.
ssolie: Cut out the phishing accusations. Mitch is correct and it was a legit question.

I don't think you need to be so paranoid. UAE was done without "developer" help from the Amiga. So have many other emulators.

I'll raise any concern that I have in this forum as I have no where else to air it and if I have the concern I would think many other people will have. I think by parting with a lot of money to buy into the AOS4 marketplace in the first place I have bought the right to pose questions.

If I didn't have one I'd probably accept resentment about me posing questions on behalf of other people but I asked for my own interests.

So no, I won't be silenced, but my question was answered.

ssolie: Sorry for the edit Mitch. I hope your question was answered. Please continue with the topic if you wish.

Wrong. AmigaOS4 runs 68k stuff seamlessly. It also runs scripts. You can also cross compile code for AmigaOS4 without using AmigaOS4 or an AmigaONE.

So please don't be complacent.
