Re: Amiga OS4 Update 1. What have you found so far?

@All

Looks like we have a progress report after 24 hours

"We're Sorry

We're currently experiencing technical difficulties. Our web site will be back again in a few hours.

Thank you for your patience"

Not what I was hoping for but its good to know that they are working on the problem even if we still dont have the update we are waiting on just yet.

Back to playing games on my minimig for a few hours then I will try again.

@Raziel

How can such a tiny file be causing so much problems to download?

I thought we were talking something more substantial from the amount of trouble we are all having trying to download it.

Re: Classic Hardware still in demand

@A1200

I think the current price is not unreasonable for a 060 system in a good tower case.

If I did not already have one and a BlizzzardPPC 060 that I have swapped out of my tower until I track some other hardware issues down I would think about it myself, as long as the price stays under ?600.

It just comes down to what you want to do if you want to run old apps and 68K games then a classic Amiga can still be a better bet and the hardware hacking is all part of the fun just like owning a classic car.

But as you say if want to run PPC software you are better of with a modern OS4 system such as a sam440 and OS4, thats why I have both still.

If you wan to play old A500 games I would say your best bet is ether a A1200 with a HD an 030 CPU and memory card and WHDLoad, or a minimig. The minimig wont play AGA games but it plays most games as well as a real A500 without the problems that go with 15 year old or older floppy disks.

So you don't want to interact with your computer in anyway?

The main reason I want USB fixed is so that the mouse and keyboard will not drop out randomly and stop responding to input. I now the hole computer has not crashed as I can still access it using ftp and the clock continues.

For me this is something that really needed to be fixed months ago with a hot fix, but that is just my personal opinion. I can wait on the rest of the updates until they are fully tested but anything has to be better than the current keyboard and mouse support on the sam440's.

I can live with the other graphics corruption and lockup issue as using a debug kernel works round the issue but the USB issue is still a show stopped.... I have tried using a powered USB hub but dose not fix the problem ether.

@ChrisH
Well as I was trying at 640x480 in 16-bit I did not expect to see any slow down as my sam440ep is a higher spec than the PC I had when quake 3 came out and also has a better graphics card

I am also hopeful that with the next update when I do longer need to run a debug kernel on my sam to stop the graphics corruption and lockup bug that will help speed as well.

@magic

As it is sound that seems to be the slow down factor on Quake 3 here on my 667Mhz sam440ep (non-flex) it could be that changing the settings for the AHI sound channel used may help.

Or maybe it is a resolution issue, what resolution are you running the graphics for quake 3 at ?

I am using SimpleMail and gmail with imap here and it dose work under OS4.1, but for some reason you need AmiSSL v1 and AmiSSL v2 installed as well as AmiSSL v3 that comes pre-installed with OS4.

You can download the installers from here: http://www.heightanxiety.com/AmiSSL/

@TrevorDick
Thats normal you have now installed Debian Linux fine by the sound of things on your sam

Now you just need to install the new boot loader on acubes website so you get a boot menu with both linux and AOS4 in it.

The boot loader is called "parthenope" and can be downloaded from acubes website and installed with hdtoolbox under OS4.

Its the new boot loader that has been giving me the slow OS4 boot issue so I have unistalled it at the moment and only install it when I want to use Linux. As not everyone is having problems with it it may just work without slowing down the loading of the OS4 kernel and modules like it dose for me.

One other thought what file system are you using for your AOS4 partition?

I am using SFS/00, maybe booting is only fast with FFS under parthenope.

@gerograph
For now I have reverted to my old single boot setup as one of the main points in having my sam is its fast boot time to alow me to make fast changes to remote systems when I don't want to wait on my windows laptop booting.

I can easily reinstall parthenop when I want to boot Linux on my sam440ep.

Re: Linux Debian and Sam440EP

Well that worked I am now duel booting debian and AOS4.1 on my sam440ep the only problem is that booting AOS4 under
parthenope is very slow, it now takes about 3 minutes to boot AOS4 for the first time instead of less than 30 seconds.

Infact I have not timed booting linux yet but it feels like linux boots faster than linux with my config.

Is this a known problem or have I found some new bug with dual booting AOS and Linux?

Re: Linux Debian and Sam440EP

@prowler
I am just doing an install myself using Elwoods guide (http://elwoodb.free.fr/articles/Sam440/debian.html)

I have not finished the install yet but so far the guide has been very helpful. At the moment it is doing the package download part, I will report back on how I get on with the rest of the install when it finishes.

That way other people can benefit from any mistakes I make along the way.

I expect it is also possible to use ext3 for the debian install on the same if you create more than one partition as I expect the loader only needs to be able to read the kernel and config file, but I think is best to start with a simple setup first. If it works as expected I can then backup my working install and try setting up other partitioning options to use ext3 for the rest of the Linux system.
