Re: RAID and AmigaOS 4.0
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

@TMTisFree

Thanks for the offer. I will likely take you up on it but first I need to get the .device compiled.

I'm using application.library's "prefsobjects" interface for the device preferences which should mean that until the proper RAID prefs program has been written it should be possible to use the PrefsObjectEditor to create the prefs file.

Also some knowledge about writing mountlists (i.e. DOSDrivers) will be needed.

As an update i did write code for striped reads and writes yesterday.

@TetiSoft

thanks... hmmm if I understand you, it is safe to let the A1 on all the time without to spin down the HD ? Doesn't THIS shorten its lifetime ?

It is intended to be a fixed width font and autohint ruin this.

So if the install script copies the #?.ttf, #?.font and #?.otag files for the font it is installed correctly?

Bye!

@Ricossa

IIRC there exist tools on Aminet. You can also use IDETool
to spin down drive (immediately, not after inactivity).
However its IMHO not recommended to force a drive to
spin down, it will decrease its lifetime. Just use a
typical 2.5" IDE drive which was eplicitly designed and
manufactured for notebooks, most of them do spin down
automatically after a given period of inactivity.

Re: usb storage question

@Jack

The Mounter is for every removable partitioned storage
medium (SCSI, IDE, SATA etc) except for USB. The mounter
for partitioned and unpartitioned USB media is
usbmassstorage.usbfd, when Utilities/USBInspector shows
a massstorage medium with a loaded driver its very likely
that typing Ctrl-Alt-M or using Commodities Exchange will
bring up the MassStorage commodity which shows media,
partitions and filesystem types and offers formatting.
What does it display for the drive in question?

AFAIK TypeManager do not accept commandline parameters

I have a commandline-only tool without GUI which is useful
for converting bitmap fonts to Amiga format, it created
the Fixed, FixedBold and FixedItalic fonts. For non-bitmap
fonts its IMHO not worth the effort to try to save mouseclicks
because there are so few clicks needed.

and doesn't have an arexx port.

Which would be overkill IMHO for a font installer.

Quote:

Where are that font attributes are stored?

Read Documentation/Fonts.doc on the OS4Final CD.
TypeManager basically just creates very small .otag
files in the FONTS: directory, those files contain
the attributes, when you dont want that the users have
to run TypeManager to create the files then distribute
prebuild .otag files (plus the 4byte .font files and the
binary source font files).

It's been so long the cement has cured?

I can't believe there's even one Amiga Inc. supporter out there.

Those dummies at Amiga Inc. Where's their AOS5.0? They don't need ANY source code from 4.x to proceed, as they've stated it's been worked on for 2 years now....

And where's that mythical G5 ACK HW???

Surely THAT could be released with AmigaDE (the awesome)?

And they NEVER explained what all the LYING behind the Kent Arena was all about....

So, they simply make fantastic announcement after announcement, and pay lawyers aplenty.

They were tooo busy to appear at Pianeta Amiga? HA!

Well, their time is up at the final dropping of the gavel, whenever THAT is...

Long live Hyperion's AOS4.x!

Support Amiga Fantasy cases!!!

New Filing at Justia
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

There has been a new filing in the Amiga v Hyperion case. I have found at least one typo in the new filing (page 3, lines 15 through 18, as the referenced paragraph didn't really contain any allegations. They must have meant paragraph 24, as there are allegations there). As regards paragraph 62 and the statements it makes regarding paragraph 62 of the amended counterclaim, paragraph 62 of the amended counterclaim contains a typo: there is a rather important word missing.

The filing concludes by demanding dismissal of the amended counterclaims, asking for lawyers' fees and court costs. While it does not preclude them, it does not ask for any other damages regarding the amended counterclaim.

It is requested that those replying in this thread at least try to park their bias at the door.

Re: Playing CDs with AmigaAMP
Just popping in

@Jack

I don't think there's much overhead using sndfile.library.
16bit 44.1KHz stereo files aren't that demanding to
stream. As I wrote before, 1411Kbit/s about 140Kb/s.
Compare this to video files and you'll notice this is
no more than 1/4 of the bandwidth. Also the audio is
uncompressed so the CPU hardly has to do anything
when the system uses DMA.

Yes you can use the analog playback if you like.
It doesn't use the CPU at all, that's certainly a plus.
If playCD crashes the CD will continue to play though.

But if you hook up your computer to some serious HiFi
equipment you would probably want to send it out
fully digital. Even on cheaper HiFi systems it's preferable
to output digitally. Unless you have a really really good
soundcard.

Sound output should not be noisier, maybe a problem
with the sound player? Or atleast its plugin/datatype?

Also when controlling the CD drive with applications like
PlayCD you will not have the option of using a equalizer.
The sound is directed to the sound chip bypassing the
system.

Harry

Thats why I think there should be an API where the 3th party program can call AmiUpdate and say MY progam xxx is located at path yyy.. then AmiUpdate should have a DataBase with all the paths for all programs that support AmiUpdate, then it can fast and easy do version checks.

If this API gets done, it should then be incorperated into the OS IMO, maybe with a Remove program function to.

I'm not bad mouthing Rigo, for I think he has done a great job... but its really only usefull for OS components that have a fixed place on sys:, so see this an Enhancement sugestion for Version 2 :)

I'm sure you must have been using AmiUpdate for long enough now to realise that there is a mechanism for supporting 3rd party applications. This doesn't rely on a fixed path, but on a per-application facility incorporated into applications by the developer. Removing programs is not down to AmiUpdate really, but more to an uninstaller supplied by the application developer, although you can use Rollback to go back a version after updating.

More information can be found at www.amiupdate.net in the developers section.

You may also want to check the database contents section too, this will show you that there are a few non-fixed path applications already supported, with hopefully more to follow

Well, I'm backup and running! Before I put in the new battery, I depolarized the battery contacts in the holder; remove battery and jumper '+' to '-' contact posts. Why? I once had no system clock at all and fiddled around to get it work. I think there's a ballast capacitor in the circuit that loses it's sense of "-" and "+" orientation to the battery.

Ok, further research: appeared that only not-booting-after-unplugging AC cable was cured by replacing the battery.
The sticky clock looks to go away after shortening the battey holder as per your advice (just inserted the battey upside down).

Now hoping that all's well now...

Thanks a lot
