Software News : ADRipper 1.5 released

Software News

ADRipper is an interface for easy ripping and encoding of audio CDs. Tracks names and others tags are retrieved automatically via CDDB. A basic CD player is also provided to listen to the tracks before the encoding.

This new version features a system to manage different encoding profiles, along with:
- the ability to send CD data to the FreeDB server
- several improvements in the GUI
- and of course, a lot of bug fixes

New versions of the Ogg Vorbis and the Mp3 encoders are also available.

Download from os4depot.net:
ADRipper
Mp3 encoder
Ogg Vorbis encoder

or from Aminet

(AmiUpdate auto-installation to come)

Any feedback welcomed!

 Re: ADRipper 1.5 released
@Centauruz

Just downloaded and it looks and acts very good (nice progress bars and interface).
Some issues (of no great imprtance here, but still):
I used it to encode onto samba share and it failed to create proper dir for album
First I tried %a/%y-%d, it created one dir named BBHQCB~5
Then I tried %a-%y-%d and same stuff (different name: BUZM9T~5)
It doesn't bother me much (I reorganize the stuff using linux box that hosts the share and Amarok, so the location I encode into is temporary)

There's genre field, and below it - category field.
My logic says that contents of the category are genres, and afaik,
there should be more entries there.

And an option to set encoding for the tags imho necessarry too.

About mp3 encoder: afaiu presets are equivalent to medium/standard/extreme,
but quality puzzled me, lame supports 0-9, here there's 10-100, I guess 60 equals to -q 5 in lame (default here and there).
Am I right?

BTW: I didn't try to give it "copy protected" cd yet
(I remember cdfilesystem had issues with reading last tracks
from copy-protected cds couple of years ago)

Cosmetics: option for smaller icon will be appreciated

Nice work!

The 'category' field is tied to the CDDB system (used together with the ID to identify a disc) and therefore can't be changed.
Actually, only the 'genre' field is really useful (and accurate).

There are 2 different things here:
- the overall quality of the encoding process, which affects the complexity of the algorithms used (and the speed of the encoding) : labeled 'engine quality' in the GUI, 'fast' is -q 7, 'standard' is -q 5, and 'high' is -q 2.
- the quality of the mp3 file produced when using VBR mode, which affects the size of the file. '10' should be equivalent to 64kbps, and '100' around 256kbps.

Sorry, the mp3 encoder really needs documentation. But you can look at here in the meantime.

I can do that

Mason also released a nice icon for ADRipper on his website (normal sized).

It still comes up here with a flashing yellow alert box and after pressing the LMB it does nothing when you press a button but change the title bar. The program doesn't quit, there's no GrimReaper and you have to reboot to get rid of it.

@valiant

Do you have HTTP handler in Devs/DosDevices ? It sometimes crashes when ADRipper scans the doslist, and I don't know why.
If so, try deactivating it. You have the other solution of using tooltype FORCEDEVICE=CD0: with ADRipper (if CD0: is your CD drive) instead.

I'm not going to deactivate something I use. The FORCEDEVICE work-around works for me.

It wakes up the ftpmount FTP: handler also, but no crashes with that one.

This app is developing nicely, thanks for your efforts on it. How about:
- FLAC encoder!
- a paypal for donations
- some way to disable the docky (tooltype)
- did I mention FLAC
