Re: Format & Quick format

@JosDuchIt

I'm unsure of the markings to recognise the HD's as RAID types. I did contact Western Digital prior to purchase to ask. They replied, but unfortunately, I no longer have their response.

The HD's that work are WD Caviar RE:
Model No: WD2500SB-01RFA0.
and
WD Caviar:
Model No: WD1600BB-56RDA0.

I have 2 each of the above drives - all 4 of which work flawlessly.
It's possible that the "RE" in the model name stands for "RAID Edition" but I don't know.

The HD's that gave problems were WD Caviar Blue:
Model No: WD1600AAJB-00J3A0.
All 4 of this type of HD gave the same troubles.

@JosDuchIt

Well this sounds very similar to a problem I had with installing PATA hard-drives on my AmigaONE XE some years ago. I tried 4 hard-drives of the exact same model number (they were Western Digital drives - I could probably find the model number if necessary). I tried every possible setting to get these drives to work correctly. The drives would appear to format and partition fine but when it came to install OS4, the install would always stop with an error at a random file being copied.

Eventually, I decided to try a different type of HD. The drives were again Western Digital, but they were RAID types. They worked perfectly, first time!

So I put it down to an incompatibilty of hardware.
Maybe a similar thing has occured in your case?

@OldAmigan

Is the PATA HDD you're trying to install on the Sii0680 interface a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) HDD?

I ask because I too have had recent troubles trying to install new hard-disks onto a Sii0680 card in my XE. When it came to install OS4.1FE I wanted to use a new hard-disk. Whatever settings I tried it just would not behave correctly. This was a non RAID specified HD. I managed to obtain another RAID HD (the existing working HD was RAID) and this installed perfectly! I can't say for sure that this is a cure, because others have reported that their particular non-RAID hard-disk would work ok.

You could try going down to UDMA 0 for the drive in U-Boot and see if that helps matters.

It's nice to see peoples pics with various techniques used to capture them. Particularly like the one taken through a floppy disk

We had a lovely clear sky for the duration of the eclipse down here in the far southwest of Cornwall. I sat outside and enjoyed the event, I have a rather red and hot mush now though, he he

I expect Stargazing-Live will have some good info and good footage of the eclipse later this evening.

Yes, I must say that it's deeply irritating when people do this.

@fastbit66
If you're posting a message to ask for help with problems, post your message to the first forum and show a little patience to WAIT for a response. If you receive no response in a reasonable amount of time, THEN go ahead and post to another forum.

Posting the same message to multiple forums at the same time just serves to waste people's time.

Just bring that topic up, just because you seems found some bugs in previous mui4 releases: you can now report them all on http://muidev.de.

This is VERY GOOD to see

When I can find time I'll make a backup of my AOS4.1u6 install and will try again the latest MUI-4 and do some in-depth testing and make reports of any bugs. Unfortunately, this may be some time away, as I don't have much spare time at present due to moving home.

Those issues with Tabs are known and already reported, and even was known before release

Sorry, but I struggle to understand. You say above that there was a known bug prior to release. Surely it would be logical to fix any KNOWN bugs before release? Thereby, confusion and time wasted by various users finding bugs and reporting in various different places is avoided.

but release was done for Christmass so you all can have something to play with. Of course, it can be not released, and you all will wait another years if you wish.

Oh, I wasn't aware that software updates for Amiga could only be released at Christmas.

You prefer to have nothing at all then ?

Of course that's not the case.

There is no many ppls it team who can spend all their free time on making absolutly bug-less stuff.

Precisely! Why would any software developer release their software with known bugs and have the subsequent time wasting?

Which things do not works correctly ? Plz, throw them there, if it indeed the case, Thore for sure will be them all. I for myself test it pretty much (not everything of course, but what i need for myself), and it was ok everywhere.

Tabs will cease to function - click around a few tabs and very soon, a freeze, and tabs no longer function, (e.g. YAM configuration).
Tab titles alignment issues - the spacing (top, bottom etc) didn't appear to function correctly.
Scrollbar alignment issues.
NListviews - Colours tab/Title - vertical gradient doesn't work.

My testing was short and these are things from memory, as I've reverted to MUI-3.9 to have the proper function of programs such as YAM.

You feel free to not use it , but soon or later you will realise how good is it.

Thank you, I will. For the moment MUI-4 for OS4 is not in a useable condition for my OS4 Amiga. Clearly it is not good at the moment if it causes the malfunction of programs?

Quote:
I do not know, in today realms when there is no developers, have something like this its just fat surprise!

I would say it's also a 'fat surprise' to have updates released with basic problems, which can cause a user a LOT of troubles and hassle and could cost them loss of work or files. YAM-2.8 is a case in point. It was released with some serious issues.

I appreciate all efforts that are made by various developers and beta-testers etc, to improve our Amiga experience - of course I do, and I've made plenty of donations to such. However, there seems to have been too many instances recently where updates and stuff has been released too early which have glaring problems, and are obviously not ready for release.

@kas1e

MUI4 leaves me somewhat concerned - my initial testing to change various GUI elements has shown-up various bugs and things that do not work correctly (I have an XE). Oh, I've had a couple of system crashes aswell.
Sure, I'm all for having the ability to configure the GUI how you want it. However, the question I would ask; Is MUI becoming a configuration monster? I mean there's stuff in there that is completely superfluous and pointless. Sorry, but more and more stuff seems to have been thrown in and MUI has become way over the top in my opinion.

@kas1e

Yes, I've had the same occurence. I think this may be because there were more than one update directory of the same date within the rollback dir.

I manually copied over the update files from the old format date dir to the new format date dir and then deleted the old format date dir - since then, no more request windows asking to do the date conversion.

Looks like a probable bug in the date conversion routine though?

Did it mean that in prefs:gui there is font settings which are preffered over prefs:font ?

Exactly.
You'll need to edit the gui.prefs file for the SilverGreen theme, and set the font you want to use.

There will be a font pref set in the theme itself which takes priority over the system font prefs. You should be able to find the setting within the theme and change the font to the one you want.

Yes GR text IS aligned here.

I think your problem is very likely to be due to the theme used, which is overiding the system font prefs. Try changing the Workbench theme back to default and see if that cures the problem?

It almost certainly will!

If you wish to continue using SilverGreen theme, you'll have to search for the font prefs within the theme?
