Thanks for the info and cautionary warnings. It seemed a good deal so far, so I think I'll keep his details to myself for just a while yet I asked the seller if he would mail me a shot of the board and if possible the fixes. I just received a picture and have submitted it to the hardware section of the gallery. I'm hoping if someone can confirm the fixes. It appears to be just a pair of wires to me

@lylehaze Quote: When you added the heatsink, did you use a bit of thermal grease? It's necessary to conduct the heat from the chip to the heatsink. No need for the "expensive" stuff like Arctic Silver, just the cheap stuff from RadioShack will work fine.
Also, if you want to know which chip(s) are shutting you down, you might want to play a bit with some freon spray, chilling one chip at a time until operation is restored. Might be a bit hard to get nowadays, it used to be much easier to find before we got holes in the ozone layer.
Finally, check the rotation on the CPU fan.. they work better if they are blowing air onto the heatsink instead of pulling air from it. The heatsink is definately greased on with a bit of thermal transfer compound. The fan is blowing through the sink rather than drawing through it too. Not seen any freon spray, but my blistered forefinger is not a bad indicator . Freon spray. Hmmm, is it legal still? I can't imagine it would be too good for the environment.

The subject line says it all The machine is an A1-XE, G4 running at 800MHz and comes with 128MB of RAM and a Radeon 7000. It could me mine for 300 UKP <grin> The seller tells me it has had a fix for the IDE, but I am not particulaly sure what he means by that Could someone shed some light? I do recall there was an issue with the articia that affected UDMA and USB (or was it ethernet?) It would make a rather nice yultide addition to my collection, but I'd prefer to know exactly what I'm getting for my money.

I have tried. I know the 68040 is the toastiest of the entire 680x0 series, especially at 40MHz.
There is still a problem with the display going bad, though it takes longer. Several of the motherboard chips seem to get very hot - so much it burns to touch them sometimes.
Could using double pal be overdriving them?

There is a heatsink on the 68040, liberated from an old AMD K6 machine as well as a nice big push-pull arrangement in the case.
Alas it seems it is not enough.

Tracking down individuals by IP is rather difficult. There are so many layers, network interfaces, proxies, firewalls, NATs and other contrivances that frankly what ends up in your transfer / access logs are largely useless.
It's not uncommon to run into dead ends in this fashion, I shouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Well son, that explains the tortured expression on your face. The QWERTY indentations on your rear will fade, over time... As for what to do, I suggest you first give it a good clean. Three years is a long time and dust is thine enemy There's a lot of fun you can have with this machine. I suggest getting OS3.9, a nice fast accelerator card and maybe even go for the whole tower conversion and fit a nice devilishly fast graphics card. This may cost a bit, but you could always sell your soul

Hello my fellow amigans. I am wondering if one of you can help me with what I think may be a hardware issue in my A1200-T which uses the Blizzard 1240 68040@40MHz. The screen seems to corrupt after about 20 minutes, giving all manner of unusual patterns and flickering pixels. Not long after, the machine locks up. The whole system seems to run very hot, especially the custom chips. I added heatsinks and extra cooling to the case but unfortunately the environment itself may be partly responsible, it's very hot and humid around here for most of the year. Hell will freeze before that situation changes Any advice gladly received... -- BeSilly
