The Xena module
Just popping in
Just popping in

Is the purpose of the Xena established yet? If it has I have not been up to pace and this might be a bit late.

According to the X1000 webpage the contents of the Xena was up to "us". I gather that what that means is that they will sneak around the Amiga-forums to see what we wish, and for now, I haven't seen any particularly wishes.

The reason for this post, is that I want you to throw ideas around in what you want your Xena to do.

Remember in the old days, it was these extra modules that made Amiga better. Usually by offering greater graphics and multitasking.

My suggestion is simple but since I am inept in programming is just an idea that might not be possible.

The original processors of the Amiga was graphics, but that is not a problem anymore, with good graphics cards you can do much the same. Multitasking with good sound quality isn't a problem either.

But I remember the saying that "The Amiga can emulate everything!" was a particular statement to listen to.

Can Xena be programmed easily and maybe on the fly to emulate all sorts of stuff? Like ANY software from anyware to be run like it would on a native hardware system? Because there might be a future in that! It would also take care of our legacy-problems. Imagine running everything on your Amiga fast by just teasing the Xena-module properly with some small piece of software. Imagine running exotic software in a window on your screen in the workbench. "Xena- the holistic emulator"...

Or maybe you could program it entirely to be more consistent on running rich graphics that day, and program it to be more consistent on running many programs smoothly the next day? Like an "up to you environment" ? As versatile as the bootblock back in those days.

I have no idea what is possible with that Xena hardware, as you probably have gathered in my novice sense of hardware understanding. But I am just trowing out ideas because it makes things make sense. You do the same now.

I hope it's not to late and there is a possibility for this.

@Amigo1

In Bergen there has been lot of snow. Its a powdery and we are getting used to it by now. Its been a long winter with snow. Traffic today was surprisingly good, exept to Sotra, but those living there can't seem to handle anything

You could read the weather forcast or some weather station in Norway, like my own, http://www.wunderground.com/weatherst ... History.asp?ID=IHORDALA26

(But it doensn't measure snow, I have to install a heating element in my rain gauge to make it melt into it. Now the snow just gathers on top of it and eventually blows away reading zero.)

Re: OS4.1 Update 1 problems & solutions

I had a big problem installing the update, but I managed to find it out on my own. In case somebody else has this problem I offer a solution. Maybe not the best one, but it worked for me.

PROBLEM:
Booting from the update 1 install disk halted after OS 4.1 spash screen in a black screen forever.

SOLUTION:
Boot from the original OS4.1 installation disk to free access to system files so they would not be in use. Deleted all system files and then inserted the update 1 disk. Copyed all systems files from update 1 disk to System disk. Rebooted from the update 1 disk. Installation no longer halted and I could continue installing this wonderfull OS.

CAUSE:
Unknown, maybe Kernel files.

LESSON LEARNED:
There is some differences in the OS makeup causing trouble to a specific setup

@ikir

You are such a show-of! Your Amiga reminds me of that Twin Peaks-episode where Nadine demonstrates her "COMPLETELY silent drape-runners"

Also joking, and I see your point

There has been arguments about the Amiga being very silent "back then". No fans and stuff like the PC. The "Noclick"-command was magical.

My flex fans, so lucky you!

I got mine a month ago. A 733 Mhz. There has been a tedious task getting it up and running.

I haven`t had an Amiga since my A4000 blew up back in the 1996 due to a unknown power surge.. But I have always sort of missed the Amiga, but I never baugth one again, until now. Back then I baught a pc. I regret that. There are annoying differences between the Amiga and PC i had to get adjusted to.

Todays computerworld misses what those Amiga-days had: I don`t know,
something... And I was missing it! So I got the Sam Flex.

The Amiga is a bit of a ghost of itself, and I miss running everything native Amiga on the Sam without going through tedious task with emulation here and there. I understand why we have to do this, but i wish OS4.2 did all this automatically.

Having sorted out lots of the new stuff on the Amiga+remembering how the old commands run, and re-re-adjusting back to the Amiga from PC that was all stored in the back of my brain, the result was that my Sam and I have stopped crashing upon eachother and are getting along much better.

There is alot of work being done, I know, and maybe we have the good Amiga era back with that spirit we all know.

I am definently keeping this machine!

I dont get it either. I have never tried MOS , but you say "I really surprised because in everyday usage OS 4 does not seem to be that slow"

How is the priority set in MOS? Because the test states that is was done with multitasking. Does MOS allow this test software to get all ressourses since it seems busy? While in OS4 it has to stand in que among the rest of the running software?

Perhaps a new test has to be run, with a measureable amount of other tasks running. Maybe there will be a different result.

This backplate issue is really annoying to me. I got mine from Amigakit and that big opning isn`t the worlds most sexy thing. Imagine all the things that might get in there; flies, mice and not to mention all those squirrels.

Secondly, the sockets are mounted directly to the motherboard. In the event of being completely drunk and everything, one might trip on, say the network cable, and rip the socket of the motherboard. Lanes on the board might come loose with it and you have yourselfs a broken Amiga.

My idea these days are to find out if I can move the motherboard a bit further into the cabinet, make a backplate with a replica of the sockets on the motherboard onto it. Then I have short extention cables from that going to the motherboard. So in the event of bad luck it is limited to the homemade backplate, and not the motherboard itself.
