@ddni The picture is from wikipedia, it's dominant browser by country, Chrome rules the world. Firefox is in freefall, 31% to 18% share in 4 years, Chrome is now at 45.60% global share. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_web_browsers

@Lio Agree, I was in exactly the same position as you. My ageing A1XE got to the stage where it was no longer worth the time and money I was putting into trying to keep it running, after many wasted weekends and £100s of replacement cards, RAM etc. it started being very flaky and crashing all the time, but it's an old, buggy board by design. I looked at my options, a Sam 440 would have felt like a downgrade, but 460 and X1000 were too unsupported for my taste and not to mention their high prices was too hard to justify. So in the end I migrated all my data to a Mac Mini G4 and moved over to MorphOS, where the rate of development seems to absolutely fly in comparison (from 3.0 to 3.6 in a year) and the devs seem a lot more open and friendly. As a former Os4 user I do keep an eye on it still, if they ever release a PPC Mac port, I'd certainly look at dual-booting it (not that it's ever likely to happen), but the current high-price, low-support and slow rate is too off-putting for me sadly. As for Timberwolf, I think that boat has already sailed. In the general computing world, Firefox is now old news, the world has moved to Chrome and Webkit, which luckily we have in the form of Odyssey anyway. Firefox would have been cool in 2005-2009 but it's old-hat now. http://i.imgur.com/ZZL4OXf.png

I think you're a bit premature there; I ran a university website up until about a year ago and the proportion of external traffic that was firefox was higher than all the other browsers, IE included. Firefox really isn't going to disappear anytime soon.

Anecdotal evidence aside, Chrome has over double the number of users than Firefox now. Global stats show it's falling every quarter though, and has been for the last 3 years or so: http://gs.statcounter.com/Firefox has just dropped under 20% for the first time, now down to 19.7% while Chrome continues to rise up to 41.3%, Webkit is clearly the direction the industry is moving in.

Quote: ChrisH wrote: Quote:Timberwolf is too slow, bloated That's not a fair criticism, since it is not intended to be fast in it's current state (they wanted to get it stable before making it fast).
Still, MUI-OWB/Odyssey is the best browser currently available (not future promises). I wonder why Kas1e can't simply apply "OS4 patches" to more recent versions of Odyssey source code, since Fab seems to think this should be easy.
I do realise this ChrisH, but the beta (alpha?) has been out for years now with hardly any updates really, when was the last one? Over a year ago? Even if it ever does get finished, I still can't imagine it'd run very well on most OS4 platforms, even on Windows Firefox is pretty heavy on the system. The UI is also really Linux-like, it's an alien app, and it shows. MUI-OWB is an Amiga program though, it's like a modern version of IBrowse. As I mentioned, I think the time has passed anyway, Firefox is really on its way out now. It would have been cool if it was released 5 years ago, but the rest of the world is moving to Webkit, luckily we already have a very decent webkit browser.

I find MUI-OWB very stable on OS 4.1, don't think I've ever had it crash actually.
Of course, Odyssey on MOS is light-years ahead, and it would be nice if we just focussed our attention on one browser, this works well for the MorphOS community, and they now have HTML 5 video support, rudimentary Flash etc. none of which are on any OS 4 browser still.
React-OWB was fine when I used it in 2008 but since MUI-OWB came out I've not used it, Timberwolf is too slow, bloated and has too much of a non-Amiga UI for me to enjoy using, not to mention Firefox itself is past its prime and declining rapidly in market-share to Webkit based browsers (like OWB).
Netsurf has potential, but it lacks Javascript.
It would be great if we could just focus on one browser, I'd nominate MUI-OWB as the most feature-complete and Amiga-like browser we have, with the benefit of having an industry standard, modern engine too.

i think if stefan wanted it released, he could just say, 'yeah, go ahead' to oliver's frequent requests. i guess the answer is that it will never be released, which is a darn shame for both the users and the few developers who put so much (unpaid) time and energy into it.

If Stefan doesn't even reply to requests and hasn't even accepted payment for IBrowse since 2007, I'd wager he really doesn't care either way, and probably would not be remotely bothered/even notice if someone just uploaded 2.5 and put it out there? If you have access to a build, upload it somewhere.

Dead A1XE

Damn... I think my A1XE is dead. Recently it had been eating through batteries quickly, or so I thought, every time the mains power was disconnected it needed a battery change. The other day I powered it on and it shut itself down, powering on was black screen.
Upon investigation, a rogue wire had come loose from the PSU, one of the crimps on the IDE power to the CD-ROM had worked its way out of the socket and was lying on the motherboard, right near the CPU...
I've tried changing the battery again several times, stripped the machine right down to bare motherboard and GPU, no sign of life.
Green light is on the motherboard, but no video output.
There is no visible damage on the board, would there be if it had shorted it?
I guess serial de-bug is next step. What kind of cable do I need for the A1XE, not sure which port is the serial port.
Does Amigakit do A1 repairs?

Interestingly they're asking which other platforms they should port it too, someone did suggest the Amiga, but in a jokey way: "I would say AMIGA :D But since Ami is dead I say Linux cause it's my primary OS." http://www.lightworksbeta.com/index.p ... limitstart=252&Itemid=269

@Chris
There are no " rotten pieces of fruit" on Apple keyboards since 2007, the Apple logo was removed from the keycap, so they look nicely generic now.

@danwood_uk
Ok a very quick reply, but with the help of AlexC on IRC we solved it.
Turned out removing user-startup and it was fine, we investigated further and I had two instances off rexxmast running. It launched from startup-sequence and from user-startup.
Commenting it out of user-startup and now I can soft-reboot.
How peculiar!

AmigaOne XE OS 4.1 Can't Soft Reboot Anymore [Solved]

I've posted this on Amigaworld but its drawing up blank, so figured I'd ask over here too.
Basically my AmigaOne XE cannot soft-reset from my Workbench install anymore.
If I press cntl/a/a the screen goes black and then nothing happens (I have left it for an hour like this, its not just taking a while).
However, if I boot from the OS4.1 install CD, or I boot with no startup-sequence its fine. It just seems to stop workiing once WB has launched.
I've replaced envarc, L, Devs, Libs from the original OS4.1 CD. Replaced kickstart too, installed quickfix.
No joy.
I've tried the reboot command from shell, hard reboot is fine, soft is the same, just black screen.
This only started happening about a month ago, so a bit perplexed.
Reset handler is showing as running in Ranger too.

AmigaOne Commodore Case!!

So after looking at my AmigaOne, sitting there looking like a generic PC, I finally decided it needed a makeover, and ordered a CKin custom case from Commodore Gaming. Although Commodore and the Amiga are long separated, I thought it was a nice little nod to the past, and preferable over a faceless PC beige-box. I've already been using a slim Apple keyboard (no Windows keys) and mightymouse, with white speakers, so a snow-white Commodore case would look nice. I also purchased a nice 22" widescreen LCD. For extra identity, I also ordered an Amiga badge for the case. After fitting it today, here is the end result! Full Case Left: http://i44.tinypic.com/2rxtx1w.jpgFull Case Left 2 with C= Fan: http://i42.tinypic.com/s2fqtx.jpgFront Open and Connector ledge down: http://i41.tinypic.com/a0xv2c.jpgCommodore Legend inside door: http://i39.tinypic.com/66hi7t.jpgFull Case Right Side: http://i40.tinypic.com/nwy1ie.jpgMonitor, Keyboard & Mouse, OS4.1: http://i41.tinypic.com/2znpa2c.jpgFull desk with the PC screens too: http://i40.tinypic.com/211jomr.jpgI am very happy with it now, and personally think it's the nicest looking AmigaOne I've ever seen. If anyone else wants this case, it can be ordered from Commodore Gaming: http://www.commodoregaming.com/pcshop/C-Kin/Step+1.aspxI chose the plain snow-white, at ?250 its not cheap, but when has anything to do with the Amiga been cheap?! Comment please! :)
