CANCELLED! Amiga North Thames (ANT) meeting this Sunday
Home away from home
Home away from home

CANCELLED, due to bad weather.
(We're currently seeing if we can hold the meeting next weekend. EDIT: NOPE, sorry.)

WAS:
A reminder that the monthly Amiga North Thames meeting is this Sunday (10th December).

We're having our Xmas meeting, which means a Xmas meal (probably pizza!). If you want to order some food yourself, make sure to turn up on time...

@colinw
Out of curiosity:

Does that mean OS4 supports filenames longer than 107 characters?

What about path length limitations? (e.g. volume:dir1/dir2/filename)

Re: Amigans.net notification emails marked as spam (due to SPF failure)
Home away from home

Just a note that this is still happening, even though it should be easy for the owner of "groupmail.com" to fix:

I'm not sure what machine "85.25.195.184" is (reverse dns says it's astra1631.startdedicated.net in Germany), but it's the one used to send emails from "amigans-net@groupmail.com".

The SPF record for "groupmail.com" is:
v=spf1 redirect=mail.com

Which apparently means it uses the SPF record of "mail.com" instead:
v=spf1 ip4:213.165.64.0/23 ip4:74.208.5.64/26 ip4:74.208.122.0/26 ip4:212.227.126.128/25 ip4:212.227.15.0/24 ip4:212.227.17.0/27 ip4:74.208.4.192/26 ip4:82.165.159.0/24 ip4:217.72.207.0/27 -all

And since that doesn't contain 85.25.195.184 (and end's with -all), amigans.net emails are classed as spam.

Re: Beginner AmigaOS 4 based Programming Language

@AmigaSociety
Especially since you mention "more english like", I shall have to mention my own programming language, PortablE:
http://cshandley.co.uk/portable/

I've tried to make it as easy to use as possible, without compromising it's power or speed. It's heavily based on (and mostly compatible with) a famous & once-very-popular programming language called AmigaE.

You can see a lot of simpler examples here:
http://cshandley.co.uk/portable/examples/

There are also a couple of forums you can ask questions on, although I have less time these days for answering questions than I used to:
http://www.amigacoding.de/index.php?board=80.0
http://aros-exec.org/modules/newbb/vi ... me&sortorder=DESC&since=0

Here is Hello World in PortablE:
PROC main()
   Print(
'Hello World\\n')
ENDPROC

It sadly lacks tutorials aimed at beginners, but it does have fairly comprehensive documentation of all the standard functions:
http://cshandley.co.uk/portable/StandardFunctionality.html

There is also more general documentation on how it differs from AmigaE:
http://cshandley.co.uk/portable/PortablE.html

While you can find tutorials & the original manual for AmigaE here:
http://cshandley.co.uk/JasonHulance
http://cshandley.co.uk/amigae/

There is no drag'n'drop GUI creator, but it has a IMHO very easy GUI system, which I think is better than a GUI creator, because GUI creators tend to create hard-to-read (and hard-to-edit) GUI code.

BTW, while Hollywood is an interpreted language, PortablE is a compiled language. This makes PortablE blazingly fast, and very efficient in general. While compilation can take a little while on a Sam440, on a X1000 it's almost instant for most programs, and I imagine X5000 is even better.

PortablE also works on MorphOS & OS3 (& AROS for the moment), albiet with less testing on my part, and there is even basic support for Windows (no graphics or GUI, just Command Prompt stuff).

Annotate is a nice editor with syntax highlighting:
http://aminet.net/package/text/edit/Annotate_usr or http://os4depot.net/index.php?functio ... ty/text/edit/annotate.lha

I have written an add-on for Annotate, which allows you to compile & run PortablE code from inside Annotate:
http://cshandley.co.uk/temp/AnnPEGCC_r1.lha

@amigakit
I finally had time to register (*) and report the bug:

(* I really hate having to register for sites, although in this case it at least seems possible I might use the site more than once, so it's not quite so bad.)

Re: AmigaOS 3.1 getting update from Hyperion
Home away from home
Home away from home

@ferrels
I shall probably regret responding to you, but AFAIK (from public posts) :

TimberWolf is nothing to do with Hyperion. Two of their main developers created it in their spare time, but it was a personal project, with nothing to do with Hyperion. This was made clear from day 1.

I see nothing in your Amiga.org link to prove that Hyperion ever promised an Open Office port (but I didn't look past the first page). I certainly don't remember them ever promising it.

The X1000 has an audio driver. You really shouldn't complain about things that don't affect you, particularly as your information seems to be over 4 years out of date.

As Spectre660 says, I believe that after the X1000 it has been the manufacturer's responsibility to provider some motherboard drivers.

I don't know why you mention Tabor, when it hasn't even been released yet (AFAIK - I'm not personally interest in it, so I haven't been following news about it.)

Some of your criticisms are valid (Hyperion aren't perfect), but you seem desperate to blame Hyperion for everything. And the fact that you have ignored valid criticisms of your criticisms leads me to believe you are only interested in bashing Hyperion, and are unwilling to modify your beliefs when presented with facts that put Hyperion in a better light. That makes your judgement suspect, and therefore your claims suspect too.

Quote:
Hyperion and A-Eon are now a joint venture since A-Eon bailed Hyperion out of its financial mess. So laying the blame on A-Eon for the lack of driver support is the same as blaming Hyperion.

Now you are speculating & making wild accusations. You can't prove it, so it seems silly to even mention it. Except of course you personally NEED that to justify how A-Eon doing (supposedly bad) things is somehow the fault of Hyperion.

P.S. *If* A-Eon doing bad things is the fault of Hyperion, *then* A-Eon doing good things is thanks to Hyperion. A-Eon has done a lot of good, so we can thank Hyperion for that, right? (I await your logical contortions for why this is not the case...)

Interesting! They should make KingCON the default Shell (handler), as I find OS3 virtually unusable without it :)

I don't remember email verification when I uploaded eNewsReader, so either it was very easy, or it's not active . No problems from my POV, although I don't know what "Uploader" thinks about it...

@pjs
No significant instability here with Odyssey, although I do have JavaScript disabled by default (only enabled for sites that need it). (It may also help that I have GBs of RAM, so Odyssey isn't likely to run out of RAM - a fairly sure way of crashing it.)

I really like that script, that's a fantastic interface it creates. I still think I prefer ClipGrab or SMTube because they utilitze a different method to start downloads versus starting the download in Odyssey. I have issues sometimes where Odyssey freezes when there are multiple downloads started. But definitely will make use of the script, especially since there is no need for a special mplayer command, or Emotion to view the resulting downloads. ClipGrab doesn't have this have this player specific issue when it is used to download videos.

YT can be configured in a lot of different ways. Sounds like you are using the HTML page mode.

But it does not need to use Odyssey at all! I've got mine set-up to (optionally) ask some questions in a Shell window, and then play the video directly in MPlayer. The downloading is done by MPlayer.

If you have problems with SMTube, and want to try an alternative, I'd highly recommend YT:

(But best not to discuss it here, since that's off-topic. Feel free to create another thread for it though...)

File extensions have proven to bring more benefits than disadvantages.

File extension are only still with us, because they are the lowest common denominator (that still works reasonably well across all systems).

There ARE better ways, but it's hard for them to take over, when (for example) Windows doesn't support them. e.g. BeOS/Haiku had/has filetype information stored as filesystem meta data (using it's database-like filesystem).

P.S. I'm not saying whether or not file extensions should be used on the Amiga - that's a more complex discussion. (Although I suspect it should be the default, BUT not enforced/required, which is pretty much how most Amiga programs treat file extensions anyway.)

@Hitman
Maybe you should start one ;)

Maybe there ought to be a website where Amiga users can indicate their interest in going to an Amiga user group, and their rough location (nearest town/city). If there were enough people in one area, then someone might be interested in trying to start a user group. (The worst part of trying to start a user group is surely not know whether it's a viable idea in the first place.)
