Re: What do you expect from update 3?

@ChrisH

For me USB 2.o was listed on the specification when I pre-ordered my sam440ep supplied with OS4.1, so as I see it I have already paid for it and wont be paying for an upgrade to get it.

As USB is effectively broken at the moment as connecting and FAT or FAT32 formatted device to it tends to result in it being corrupted at this stage I would settle for fixed USB/FAT support under OS4.1 and if that requires a paid upgrade I will be more likely to either return my sam440ep under the trade description act as not being as described or fit for purpose then spend more money on a fix

On the other hand I quite a agree about new features like a new shell being things that better 3d support and other GUI changes being new features that I would be happy to pay for after the original defects are fixed.

Apart from USB support which has been a bit of a bad joke from had one with USB keyboard and mouse randomly disconnecting until update 2, OS4 works quite nicely and is a good upgrade over OS3.x it just has a one or two ruff edges that could do with finishing off

If you click on feature comparison "Remote desktop" is clearly listed as only being a features of the Professional and Ultimate versions of Windows.

I don't know if you need an upgrade to the professional version to fix your problems with samba and I don't have the home user version installed on any of my home computers, it may be possible to fix the backward compatibility with Windows 2000/samba by changing some security settings.

I can confirm that you can upgrade between versions of Windows 7 with without needing a reinstall and have done so for a number of customers that were moving a network domain environment for the first time. The hole process take about 20 minutes including reactivation over the internet after the upgrade.

The only real limitation is that you can not upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit without a reinstall.

You must of had Windows XP Professional installed before as the home version does not support rdesktop either.

If you read the feature list this is clearly marked and if you chose to upgrade to a cheaper Home user version (without network features designed for business users) of Windows 7 that does not have the same features as the Professional versions that is not Microsoft's fault on this occasion.

Yes XPMode is a very useful feature of the Professional and Ultimate versions of Windows 7 and and supports RDesktop, but you cant install it as you only have the home version of Windows 7.

As such you have to options pay for an Anytime Windows upgrade from "Windows 7 home Premium" to Windows 7 Professional which gets you both direct support for RDesktop under Windows 7 and "Windows XP Mode"

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Win ... TF8&qid=1302385672&sr=8-1

or

Use another slower solution such as VNC which is slower but does work.

Its not cheap to upgrade but at least too me XPMode and RDesktop are worth the additional money.

Just a typo as I was not sitting at my sam440ep, I have checked and it is interrupt=yes I have set.

It would also seem that 3d speed has dropped at some point as the gl version of quake did not use to be as slow in one of the older 4.1 beta releases it is even unplayable at 640x480 for the second episode, but at least workbench graphics corruption under Workbench as found in the older releases of OS4.1 are fixed so I can live with the performance drop playing glquake as the software render version works well as long as you don't set the resolution too high.

@Mikey_C
As a sam440ep-minitx owner I see exactly were you are coming from with your shortage of Video ram issue on your Micro-A1c and as I tried and failed to purchase one my self I could have even worse video ram issues.

I would love it if a PCIe rises board could be made to allow both the uA1c and the sam440 mini itx boards use modern easy to purchase graphics cards. I know that we would still be limited to 33MHz PCI access speeds for the cards but to me it just seems like a better long term solution.

I am also aware that there are some additional issues that need to be overcome to make such a solution work on the Micro A1 but a working 2 slot PCIe riser would help to extend the usability and expandability of both systems and most PCI mini-itx boards have working 2 slot risers.

So if a working riser for both MicroA1s and sam440eps seems workable count me in :)

I am quite happy to wait and order something else as well amigakit cant ship it for free I quite fancy BOH I just don't have the money at the moment and don't want to try and put paypal transaction for less than a pound as that only helps paypal so I will just wait a month and get it then if amigakit cant help me before then.

I have ordered from them many times and they have always been both professional and very helpful and I wish all the computer suppliers i use were as good as Amigakit, some times I just get a little frustrated when I have been waiting for something for a long time, but its not amigakits fault that the back plates took longer than expected too arrive.

Well it looks like Amigakits website wants to charge me ?0.48 for it including shipping so much for it being sent out to me free of change when available as we were originally were lead to believe would happen.

Normally I would just order the latest issue of AmigaFuture as well but it looks like it is out of stock, I guess I will just raise a ticket and see what happens as they are normally very good at sorting this sort of thing out.

Yes it can do I had the same problem with one of the other two mini-itx systems I have. The problem only showed up when I tried to swap them between cases so I could use a PCI card.

Different parts of the system run off different voltage lines and AmigaPPC boards and VIA C3 board both use a lot less power than AMD Athlon or Intel Core2 Systems.

My sam440ep (mini-itx) board also dose the same with the supplied power supply in one of my mini-itx cases and that case has a 200W PSU the other 2 have ether 60W or 80W PSU's.

@npanag

It could just be the Power supply from your new case is not compatible with your amiga one that is quite common problem with mini-itx mother boards not just the AmigaOne board.

So I would start my connecting up the power supply from your old case to your amigaone in the new case as see if that works. If it dose it meens that you need to find another power supply that fits your case and works with your amigaone.

I just thought I would also second the request for support for larger thumbnails as at modern high resolutions you can't really see that they are anyway at sizes smaller than 64x64 so their usefulness seems limited to me. But if could just be I am getting older and my eye site could be better.

I would also love to see a thumbnail grid mode as well if like the "image" view mode under dopus9 for windows if possible.

I had it on the AmigaOne but not on Sam.

As the only documentation I had was http://www.intuitionbase.com/static.php?section=en_os4-and-debian and my first attempt without if and /dev/hda instead of /dev/sda did not work I added it in the process of trying to get Linux to boot.

If its not required I will remove it from my a1boot.conf.

@Dwyloc

OK I have made some progress it looks like I had a missing / in my root=/dev/sda5 line when I changed over from /dev/hda5 to /dev/sda5 I must of removed it my mistake.

I now have a booting system but for some reason my USB keyboard stops working after the boot loader, but my mouse still works fine, unless I also add console=tty0 to my a1boot.conf.

my working a1boot.conf looks as follows:
"Linux /boot/uImage root=/dev/sda5 console=tty0 l2cr=0x80000000"

All on one line. So all you should need to do is change sda5 to the partition you have linux installed on.

I hope this is of use to other people as I know have both working Linux support and fast booting of OS4.1 Update 1 on my sam440ep (non flex), even if it did take me all afternoon to get working.

I have tried changing my config to look at sda5 as that's what the other boot loader uses but it still fails for me.

a1boot.conf file looks like this:
Linux /boot/uImage root=/dev/sda5 video=radeon:1280x1024-8@70 l2cr=0x80000000

Froom looking at the kernel load part it looks like the boot loader is not picking up my kernel boot options. Dose anyone no how to fix this as I think that the problem is linux cant find my root partion due to not being passed this info.

@Elwood
Well I have part of the success with using the new version of SLB to boot linux on my sam440ep (non-flex)

I now have a boot menu with both Linux and AmigaOS4.1 Update 1 and booting OS4.1 still works.

Booting Linux fails it looks the kernel OK and it gets as far as showing a Penguin in the top left hand corner of the screen booting stops there after a few minutes my system then reboots back to the boot menu.

Ideas on what to try next are welcome

edit: my a1boot.conf file looks like this:
