Re: New stuff from the French guys

@Elwood

"we have to leave the old games behind as porting them from W3D to Nova is a so big effort that it's a non-sense."

One has nothing to do with the other. Having Warp3D_SI on the X1000 didn't mean you could run old stuff as WarpOS layer didn't work here.

You can create great legacy support on one hand and exploit newer thechnologies on the other like a lot of indy developers do.

"have a look at about:config"

But I can't change anything.

Netsurf doesn't like to play well with others. Luckily AOS, I guess out of neccasity made disabling stuff at startup very easy. Lets hope for a different solution, though. I'm using a GFX card of the southern islands origin - a generic card without issues. Video playing in oddysey can also have similiar effect just not like the 2 minutes halts of Netsurf which happen after the page seems to have loaded and everything is ok.

Re: NetSurf development builds (now with added Javascript)

I've been testing Dev CI# 3460 of the upcoming 3.5 release and I can say the issue I had with AutoBorderSize is gone, while the issues I recognize since the first time I used Netsurf are still there: It produces on occasion a heavy load condition that brings everything to a halt. Once in while this condition might lead to a freeze. If used alongside a resource and/or composite app like Candi, it accelerates this sort of bottleneck situation. In addition, it still can't read right-to-left languages and it still can make everthing come to a halt because of a timeout (albeit this improved on the latest version). Those things are not dependent on if Java is enabled or disabled and using the settings: cache all and higher quality scaling actually can reduce the occurances described above (at the cost of making everything a little bit slower) as well as increasing memory to 48 while going beyond that makes things worse.

Re: TIMI support on DosBox

Much like the way MT-32 emulation was ported to Scummvm, Someone has done the same for Dosbox. Now I guess that version needs to be ported as it is not the official version, unlike Scummvm.

By the way, Scummvm uses Timi when you use general midi with camd. When you use the MT-32 emulation mode it doesn't go through Timi.

e2fsprogs (1.43~WIP.2016.03.15-2) sid; urgency=low

* Fix FTBFS on big-endian systems

e2fsprogs (1.43~WIP.2016.03.15-1) unstable; urgency=low

* New upstream release
* Fix resize2fs bug that could leave block allocation bitmaps
uninitialized
* The tune2fs program will ask the user for confirmation before
starting dangerous operations if the terminal is available, and it
will replay the journal if necessary
* Fix a bug which in rare cases would cause e2fsck -fD to corrupt an
extent-mapped directory.
* E2fsck will now check for extent mapped inodes with no extent header
and clear them if found
* E2fsck now checks to make sure the extended attribute header doesn't
result in the xattr extending beyond the bounds of the inode
* Teach mke2fs to parse a human-readable argument for -i option
* Teach mke2fs to automatically handle creating file systems > 500T by
automatically enable the meta_bg feature
* Mke2fs will now prompt for user verification before rewriting a file
system's superblock using the -S option
* Mke2fs no longer complains if the user tries to create a file system
using the entire block device (e.g., without using a partition).
The minor number convention is not used by all block devices, and
it's quite normal in some circumstances to create a file system
on /dev/sdc instead of /dev/sdc1
* Debugfs now can properly display and set extended timestamps
* Add an ext2/3/4 FUSE server
* Fix an "mke2fs -d" bug which could create inodes with invalid
extended attribute blocks
* Fix miscellaneous file encryption bugs
* Fix miscellaneous MMP bugs in debugfs
* The e2fsck program will no longer update the quota inodes when it is
interrupted
* The filefrag program now accounts for holes in sparse files created
by the file punch operation as an expected/optimal mapping
* Clean up gcc/clang warnings
* Add support for the checksum seed feature
* Add support for the project quota feature
* Add fallocate support to libext2fs and to debugfs
* Clean up various man pages (Closes: #798425)
* Update debian policy compliance to 3.9.7

Time for an update?

Re: Amiga Youtube videos

I did a three part AmigaOS4.1 review in Hebrew: first part from about a year ago with update 6 and 2,3 with Final Edition. If anyone comes across any Hebrew speaking Amigans you can direct them and the rest of course are welcome to view my design selections and enjoyment of the Amiga's way of interfacing.

Spread the word and may those videos create issues for the os language guys.

Radeon R9-270 and maybe GCN 1.2 in the future. This card shaved 5 seconds from the X1000 startup time comapred to the HD5870 I had before and I'm quite happy with the cpu/gpu AOS4.1FE combo.

@Chris

I think it has something to do with a specific ResetWB that stems from saving changes in GUI as I have been doing some remodeling and only after a couple of those as an accumulating effect, because I do encountered a bug in 4.1FE GUI that if you save a few times it distablises the system until it freezes. Anyway, didn't get a chance to thank you for your work because the new NetSurf is in fact better and performs smoother. So have a great week.

@Chris

"Does it only change the colours if you use ResetWB?"

=> No no no the fact that ResetWB causes some instability (not just with Netsurf but with the os entirely when NS is more sensitive and after ResetWB it can hasten a random freeze which happena when NS is open), is not related from what I've tested to difference in the chosen color for os menu as opposed to NS menu color.

"Which theme are you using?"

=> "Silverback" from os4depot. With the default theme it still cuts the words. I have enlarged the relevent font on the os and NS did not compensate for the larger font which results in a "longer" word and that is regardless of theme.

_____________

Using AutoBorderSize makes the freezes appear every few minutes. Not using it the freezes appear every couple of hours or so and when not doing any browsing besides the common Amiga sites which I think means very little to no Java. I guess also that each browsing or os session in itself are not a couple hours and I do close the browser or reset (cold/warm) the os. So it maybe more frequent than that.

Got it also after switching themes and behold - if it is Amiga then the bug is weird:

In GUI preferences under Gadgets=>General>Background texture - if you don't have a texture (the default theme has one) and just use a solid color then DiskImageGUI crashes!

Re: NetSurf development builds (now with added Javascript)

@Chris

Using latest build without even noticing there is a setting called "resize with contents" and can reproduce the AutoBorderSize conflict.

I can give some spaces after the words of the quicklinks (speedbutton) and then there is some adjustment of the button to accomodate. Otherwise it cuts the end of the words that are longer than 5 characters. I'm using a different theme than the OS4.1FE default then there might be some conflict here too.

Edit:
Yet another thing seems to be related to it not liking ResetWB very much and also it changes the color of the font on the menus to a different one then the what the OS uses so the backgroung color I choose for non popup menus is bad when used in the Netsurf menus.

Re: NetSurf development builds (now with added Javascript)

Unfortunatly since 3.4 I've been having random freezes and my quicklinks fonts are not coexisting with the actual buttons as their size is not changing fo fit the quicklinks strings. The freezes might have something to do with a heavy load condition (cpu at max) or maybe a certain commodity eventhough I've been using the common ones.

Edit: Well, it seems Netsurf really hates Autobordersize. After disabling it the many freezes stop while a freeze could still happen in relation to a heavy load condition that might have something to do with Javascript enables, however a freeze did happen on the Amiga sites which doesn't relly on Java.

Another thing is that Netsurf behaves weird if something temoprarily is wrong with the internet connection as might happen during the day on some days.

If the Amiga made windows the right way before everybody else why can't it call it windows? because of a corporation's desire for monopoly over words as supposedly marketing issue? I say computing done the right way triumphs over marketing and this comes from a mere user. Similarly, I remember using desktop for a long time and the term "desktop computer", while Workbench was the AmigaOS back then and of course it is my system drawer's name right now

@K-L

Thank you for clarifying the matter. When the media player thing popped up I usually could dsi my way around it maybe like 10 times before I couldn't. Now maybe a single time if I'm lucky. The overall feel even in js heavy sites is that it is more stable - until it isn't, and I mean I have fewer chances at recoverability (trying to free memory, getting over dsi, etc).

@Daytona675x

As I said, I know it is a general sound issue I'm experiencing after the switch to the Juli@, however while that sound issue pops up once in a while (and most of the time not at all), here it is always manifested in every game session, especially when moving the plane to an off-screen position.

Well, now that I have the OWB media player error on Facebook I can't recover from the DSI.

*EDIT*

After further testing it seems it is the same situation as before: sometimes the DSI can be skipped and browsing can be resumed, and I still get the same brower freeze when memory becomes scarce because of js heavy sites.

@TSK

It's not just about issues as the Juli@ is superior to the onboard sound which I never met one like it that I liked. It also can pass a signal via toslink to the Yamaha receiver which I couldn't do with the onboard spdif output.
