Re: AmigaOne XE setup

Just popping in

I'm reinstalling. The Update 2 did not change the red text to say Update 2. The install gave some message about kicklayout not changed, might have been modified. That is on top of a vanilla OS4.1update1 install from teh update 1 CD image I donloaded from Hyperion. As I did nto change anything whatsoever, the only other things I did was using the 4.1u1 CD t oinstall audio (envy driver), dopus4, amidvd, amiftp, dvplayer and tunenet. Last time all I did was dopus4... So it was all from the 4.1u1 CD onto a formatted partition as required by the 4.1u1 install CD. The 4.1-noupdates before u1 does not exist anymore.

So, I'll have to assume it's safe to no tget the red boot message updated to say "Update 2".

But the important thing is that it's just a name/title which is updated to the correct thing at each update, so it should have been fixed with your subsequent updates.

Once you get Update 6 installed, AmiUpdate is at your service for topping up with the latest fixes. Don't forget to let it do that.

I guess I was hoping for a "Yes, in Update 2 someone forgot to adjust that text line, that is known, and all is well" or "You should have seen it written as Update 2 so somehow you fumbled the Update2 install stage". The unknown makes me nervous. If I find time maybe I'll do the exercise again just to make sure.

And I now have Update 6 installed. I don't have a network connection yet until I get the WiFi figured out. Trying to figure out time to dig out a non-laptop PC to check and reflash firmware in the Prism Wifi card for WPA support. Though the card has an AmiKit sticker on it, I bought it from them, and I'd hope they would do any Amiga-ification needed before shipment. ;) I also have an Atheros MiniPCI + adapter coming for the more recent WiFi release stuff. Only when some WiFi thing works will I be able to benefit from AmiUpdate. In time, I'll save up for an ExpressCard to desktop PCI-Express adaptor with a PCI-Express to PCI32 slot adaptor on that, to have handy for any future needs like this potential firmware thing.

P.S. As I'm trying to debug the wifi thing, what is the command to see what all PCI cards I have connected, comparable to lspci on Linux? I wan tto say Ranger or something like that, but it's been too long.

OK, I think I'm successfully at update 5. I forgot to download update6 for the CD that I burned on the PC with al of this...

I did have one oddity, at the Update 2 stage, on rebooting the red text in Uboot announcing which version of the OS is loading still said Update 1. So I may need to go back and try again, unless it was a typo and was OK, or if a later update took care of everything and I'm now OK regardless.

I've been trying to configure the Prism Wifi card from Amikit, but have not yet got a connection to anything. I thought I had given it everything correctly, but today I realized it's asking for a WEP key, and my PC laptop says the router uses WPA2. I'll go chase after the more recent Atheros install file and see if that stuff has something I can use here. Can anyone comment on this part or offer suggestions?

It seems that from here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AmigaOS_4

based on the 2008 copyright date then I must have the original 4.1 release, and no updates, so I should start with the quick fixes and then update 1 etc.

I fixed my screen resolution in P96mode so I can see straight.

I have Kickstart 53.5/Workbench 53.1. Anyone know how to map that to 4.1, 4.1u1, 4.1u2, etc? Copyright is 1985-2008.

AmigaOne XE setup
Just popping in
Just popping in

I've finally reached my buried XE G4 and turned it on last night, after a handful of years being in the back/bottom of a large pile. Finally, OS4.1 after a very long time!

Since the coin battery died, I no longer have, and no longer remember myself any eeprom settings details. I remember something vaguely about the keyboard help key, a uboot setting to prevent my KVM keys from poping up help window every time I change which computer gets the screen.

It looks like I am using the onboard Via IDE, with a hard drive and a CDROM. Somewhere I have a SiI board, but it's not currently in use.

Any suggestions on what settings to do for this, and how to do them these days?

I need to figure out what rev I left off and get up to date on OS.

I plan to put Timberwolf, AmiCygnix, update the SDK, what other things are the must-have software today in 4.1?

amigabounty.net is not dead. It may feel somewhat frozen at the moment. Troels is swamped and has a hard time keeping up. I've offered to help with the administration and convert to a USA Ebay account to help with some of the problems from that end, but have not had time either. :/

I'm trying to get my house ready to sell, then shop and buy and move a couple times. Not able to keep up with much of anything, and the wife is not happy that we won't be ready for a For Sale sign out front tomorrow as she had wanted. :( Going to be an insane month or few...

Generally speaking, to get an NDA with a company for technical documentation requires convincing them that giving us the docs will make them a lot of money. This is because we'd be taking up their engineers' time with questions about any confusing and missing parts of the documentation. We're not really in the position to make them a lot of money.

I've had far more success than rejections. Successes include ATI (before AMD), AMD, Uli, PA Semi, Via, PLX Tech, Jmicron, Freescale, and others. Rejections include Nvidia, Intel, Ricoh. Nether list is all-inclusive, but what I can remember off the top of my head has more than doule the successes than failures.

My guidelines to getting an NDA with such people, for a hobbyist sort of project like I've ben involved in myself:
1) Try. you certainly don't get what you don't ask for. Heck, Via's response to my NDA request was a PDF file in a reply email, nothing else.
2) Have a legitimate company in a relevant industry. Your company sounds like image processing, which is related to video processing, which is very relevant to this thread's stated topic.
3) Have a professional website for said company of yours. Most vendors do check up on you before calling or emailing.
4) It's OK to be a startup company. (I talk about our company here being an embedded system design house, which we do aspire to be, and have a variety of non-Amiga projects like that)
5) Do NOT say the A-word. No one takes Amiga seriously anymore out there. Sorry. Instead, talk Linux, QNX, or some other embedded OS that may need driver improvement in, and would reasonably be part of or host to your intended product, with the intent of sharing code with what we in this discussion want to happen. (same for design modularity/reuse in a hardware project)
6) Be honest. Try not to talk about Amiga. If you find yourself getting herded into saying that, don't lie your way out of it. Code sharing with an oddball platform that interests you isn't a bad thing. Exaggerate a little, but liing will get you in trouble at some point.
7) Be closed-source/proprietary. you won't get NDA protected documentation for an open-source project. Closed-source is the way to go.

I believe Hans fits my own guidelines pretty well, and I'd encourage him to have a go at requesting NDA to these things. I'd encourage trying via the AMD Embedded Developer Support site. it's relatively easy to get into that, and it has a path to the Embedded Discrete Graphics products group NDA. That wasn't hard either. Once there, you may have contact with the right people to ask about the video acceleration NDA, or someone who can help get you to the right people.

Doesn't hurt to ask. Maybe they'll say no, but at least give them the opportunity to say yes.

That isn't supported yet? I don't have an X1000 to know such things, but I find this a bit surprising. How do we get someone on that?

Ah, I see I hadn't got to Hans's post yet. I'm happy to hear someone is working on these things. It'd be great to have these guys posting how they do what needs done to the amigaos dev wiki, so others that aren't sure where to start can learn what to do.

Awesome news about LibreOffice! i switched to that from OpenOffice during the uncertainty period before Oracle decided what to do with it. I also underatsnd the Libre people were more open to new features and patches, while Sun preferred in-house developments and tended to refuse outside work no matter how good it was. So LibreOffice is a little better in some areas than OpenOffice.

I was really hoping for netbook news. I WANT ONE!

Thank you for helping me to understand. I had an idea of what the class library was and what Jamiga itself was, but got confused about the new JamVM talk.

I'm very excited to see you talking Java8. Very nice to see that we're not all hoping for Java5 someday...

For the ignorant like me, what is JamVM compared to Jamiga? Is it a library to be used together with Jamiga, or is it another VM engine implementation to replace Jamiga? I didn't find an answer to that in the 2012/2011 blog posts.

As for me, the only one and real reasson of such notebook, is not to be notebook like for internet/office/etc, but while be a slow, still be a cheap aos4 hw, which you can easy use when you not at home. That helpfull for os4 coders who just want to test their code when they not at home and in general i see it as only one (and enough) reasson to buy.

For me it will be that as well as the ability to use AmigaOS even at home again. I'm not sure when I'll ever be able to set up a desktop at home, or when I'll ever have time again to spend tethered in the computer cave room. A netbook lets me use it where I'm able to be, even when at home, which is still probably where I'll use it most.

I had a PC laptop I was preparing for cross-compiling. It died back in November. The temp replacement I have is not capable of running what I'd got together. And I'm waiting for Ivy Bridge for a good replacement, and I'm rather picky so I always find it hard to buy a laptop anyway.

I merely hold them on behalf of amigabounty group until a new taker wants them. If the bounty is closed and refunded then we'll look at posting to sourceforge, until then they wait for another bounty attempt.

I'm also waiting for ivy bridge to get a suitable pc laptop for cross compiling again. Mine died in november and I'm borrowing a cheapo laptop that is not able to run my virtual linux stuff.

I disagree that qt makes wx less interesting for a couple reasons. First, some apps I am interested in are wx. Second, wx is designed so when you run something, it appears as native to your os gui. It looks like a windows or an osx or an amiga app. Qt apps look like qt apps on any os.

If I get time and machine, ill look at continuing wx myself. If someone else doesn't want to wait for that "what if", come get it. its waiting.

Indeed abalaban has given me his source code. It was my bounty suggestion, I want this to happen. I can't work on it myself right now, my university course (VHDL), job and family don't leave me any time for fun right now. I also am unable to use OS4 for the moment, though I very much intend to correct that as soon as I can get a netbook. (I have no place to set up my XE) Until then, if there are other programmers interested, please let the amigabounty committee know.
