Re: AmigaOS and web browsing in 2013

@Fab

Sorry FAB I was mislead by your previous post which said something to the effect that you use the same MPlayer scripting to achieve your overlay effect?

I don't know what I have done wrong but I can't achieve what you do in terms of 99% of youtube videos playing back because on my peg running MorphOS it was 99% were not playing?

I don't understand why Youtube insist on flash they need to drag there HTML5 out of beta and into the forefront.

Aside from youtube I want an Amiga browser that can play video on any website which none of the offering seem to be able to do.

Thanks for your work FAB it is appreciated.

Odyssey OWB is a great work by FAB however it does have it's problems and a lot of the solutions are a work around. By that I mean the scripts and pluggin to playback video in youtube are specific to the website to make it work.

I attempted video playback in youtube today with my pegasos 2 with the latest Odyssey OWB and all scripts and the latest swfdec pluggin plus spoofing turned on and not all videos work about 3 out of 20 attempts worked.

Odyssey OWB video playback in the browser with youtube uses the swfdec pluggin for flash playback which is really slow. The overlay mode uses MPlayer which is a workaround, and is not really playing the video in the browser.

I would love to see Odyssey OWB updated to parity for AmigaOS but only if there is no other viable alternative. I would prefer to see Timberwolf completed, as it is very usable on my Pegasos however it does need optimisation, and hardware acceleration, plus some tweaking of the GUI i.e. scroll bars.

I would also say I agree that 5K would better be used by being given to finishing development of some really important technologies like that which comes with Timberwolf or Qt5.

I agree with Ssolie.

What I would like to know and have clarified by SSolie, is if we do further support the development of Timberwolf with donations, who will be developing it, will there be faster periodical updates, and will there be ongoing development of Timberwolf browser after final release?

Qt is such a landmark development for AmigaOS however porting a software like QtWebkit is just that a port, after porting it, will someone maintain the development and updates of it with optimisations?

I think Timberwolf is the browser we should support, and 5K or a bounty could go along way to making it a finished reality.

@Joeled

Excellent interview, I am very interested in his work and very much appreciate his achievement with QT and the software it has brought to AmigaOS.

Solved why Timberwolf won't launch, DSI error.

Hi people,

I had to reinstall AmigaOS after hard drive errors.

I have always had a working version of Timberwolf on my Pegasos 2 and tonight when I reinstalled my machine and Timberwolf from a fresh install it would dsi error at the splash screen.

After much searching for answers I found a thread that gave me the answer however very cryptic, so I thought I would clarify for everyone.

With the latest install file of Timberwolf, it seems to assume you have an existing copy of a previous release candidate, so when you install it you don't get certain directories and files needed for successful launch. So I found on Aminet the original release candidate and copied the needed files to my directory and it now launches.... HOORAY!

The directories missing and there included files are as follows.

searchplugins
plugins
modules
res
dictionaries
extensions
defaults
chrome
components

The link to the release candidate 1 is as follows

http://aminet.net/package/comm/www/timberwolf

Simply download and unpack, then copy the missing directories and there files to the Timberwolf directory and all should work.

Hope this helps a few people struggling as I did to get it to work.

@zzd10h

I will be interested to see if a port of the latest Qt will be done so we can have the most up to date ports of Qt based software. QtWeb is interesting I hope the latest version is faster and more optimised with a full internet experience?

@ssolie

As tempting as FABs offer is to see MUIOWB upgraded I would prefer Timberwolf to be finalised and have ongoing development.

Can you tell me a few things?

1. I have a Pegasos 2 with a radeon 9250, will I experience hardware acceleration of Timberwolf in the future, will I benifit from Gallium or will my GFX card not be supported?

2. Will another bounty help move things along quicker with the finishing of Timberwolf and establish a more rapid production of Timberwolf updates?

3. Will Timberwolf as a finished product be fully HTML5 compliant and be functional with sites like Youtube?

4. Will Timberwolf be maintained after final release?

AmigaOS and web browsing in 2013

For most websites MUIOWB, Timberwolf, QtWeb and ReactionOWB does the job however websites that have streaming video it just can't seem to be done?

I have gone to the youtube html 5 beta site and none of the browsers rate as a html5 capable browser no matter how I spoof the browser.

In 2013 do we think it will be possible to have a browser in AmigaOS that is rated to playback in the browser window and not via some external app trickery content such as HTMLVideoElement, H.264, WebM VP8, Media Source Extensions, MSE & H.264 and MSE & WebM VP9?

I thought Timberwolf was HTML5 compliant except for Flash also MUIOWB am I wrong on this can someone clarify?

What are the barriers stopping this being achievable could a bounty help resolve this?

Cheers

Will the hardware acceleration support older machines with older radeon graphics cards like 9250? Please forgive my ignorance will galium only support hd cards or will it support older cards also?

Ah well just read some more of the specs of the WiiU the down side is the specialised Optical drive which is not a standard DVD. So in effect makes it useless as a viable platform.

Thought I would put it out there I found it interesting that Nintendo chose the Wii U CPU to be based on IBM's latest PowerPC technology, the POWER7 architecture. It has four USB 2.0 ports, if only it had a hard drive although it does have 8gb and 32gb flash storage configurations. It also has an AMD GPU so could it be a AmigaOS port candidate?

Thanks for your reply, I have copied it to the Amiupdate directory in both it's own folder or by it's self and I still get the same error. I fail to see where I am going wrong the author really needs to find a better installer solution.
