Re: Will the release of AOS4 spur development?

What is it that would prevent any willing developer to use the current one? Why is the current SDK suddenly not good enough? What do people actually expect from the new one?

The information for the OS4 timezone.library is not available in the current SDK for instance.

I am wanting to add this type of feature to Digital Universe 1.6 but the lack of an SDK containing the headers and info I need is holding me back

What is the point in OS4 having such nice features if develpers cannot make use them yet ?

Glad to hear all went well eventually. Steve lives almost next door to Dan relatively speaking which explains why his was processed so much quicker.

@tonyw

I think Dan processes the orders manually, I know mine are done that way. So the time difference between Australia and Canada can make quite a difference in the response time.

Let me know if you do not hear anything today and I will give him a prod.

Does this software actually display any images or allow you to click around the universe like Starry Night?

There are plenty of images included, and naturally planets are rendered as images. Digital Universe 1.0 (68k) did all this long before anything on the other platforms did

I have Starry Night Pro on my Mac and am not too used to it yet. I find the navigation much more intuitive in both Distant Suns and Digital Universe than the way you drag things round in Starry Night.

Quote:

Does it support MiniGL for 3D graphics, etc?

It uses standard graphics libraries no MiniGL or Warp3D. If needed this sort of feature may be added in version 2, but currently DU runs pretty fast and smoothly without using any hardware accelleration.

Or is it just text based... ? I checked our your GUI screenshots but did not see any pictures, just text.

I am not too sure how useful just a text based astronomy apllication would actually be ! Are there any ?

It looks as if I will have to get around to uploading some more images in the Features section of the web site. ATM you will find lots of images if you look in the "Work in Progress" section of the web site.

[edit] Modified the DU website so that the existing images can be found more easily from the Features section !

Digital Universe Online Ordering and Download System now running.

Hi,

The Digital Universe is now available worldwide and not just to the UK and Europe, in fact any galactic citizen with appropriate credit card can do so too

Dan has set up the online system at https://www.syz.com/DU/order.html

Actually this has been available for almost two weeks but I was away and unable to test it or inform anyone about it until now !

There is a brief write up of the history of DU at http://www.syz.com/DU

As can be seen it is only the Amiga OS4 version that is in active development at this moment in time.

A full announcement will be made in the usual web based news sites soon but those eagerly awaiting DU need not wait any longer.

Bill.

I need to go and update the http://www.digitaluniverse.org.uk/ pages now !

@xeron

I'll second that.

A while ago we had a long holiday so missed a lot of stuff on the "recent" page. I was wondering then whether we could have a "not quite so recent" page of things we might have missed.

It would be VERY useful to have the Recent page and then links to pages of things that were recent before they got knocked off the latest page.

It has also saved me a trip to the Post Office this lunch time.

@Raziel and others from Europe.

I do actually know the cost to Germany as I have already been asked.

What I do not know is the Post Office definition of "Europe" and where that zone covers exactly.

It will be safe to say that Germany, France, Benelux countries, Italy, Spain and Portiugal would all be the same price. Not too sure about Scandinavia and eastern Europe yet.

I will update my web pages shortly. for ordering from the above areas.

Edit: Web pages have now been updated.

The other thing is that for upgrading from v1.03 people will need to let me know that they will be sending their old keyfile. I guess Dan's system will take care of that automatically but PayPal doesn't so those upgrading it will need to email me too.

I have an emails with directions on how to get there if you want ;)

I think ordering online and downloading would be easier though.

BTW. Thanks for demo-ing DU at AmiWest 2006.

The good news is that DU 1.5 for OS4 is finally completed.

The package can be obtained as a download, two choices of file are available an LHA file or an ISO image for creating an install CD. Both files contain artwork to create a CD label and cover.

The not so good news is that Dan Charrois of Syzygy who is organising the online ordering and distribution system is away for a while, so that there will be no download system until the end of November or early December.

However, for UK users and maybe western European users, Digital Universe can be provided on a CD sent by post. Users in other parts of the world would be best to wait until the online ordering and download service is available.

I will be finding out the postage costs for varoius European locations and arrange somehting soon. UK users that want a CD sent by post can do so now either by cheque or Paypal. Obviously the cost of posting a CD will be a bit more than the price for the downloadable version, but I have tried to keep this down to make it reasonable.

See http://www.digitaluniverse.org.uk/ and follow the Ordering link for more details.

I will get around to posting a more official "Software News" item later this week.

The other good news is that work has already started on v1.6 which will be a free upgrade to v1.5.

Cheers. The one I have at the moment you can see at the left - used for my avatar. It is Sygygy's "Three Y" logo but it does not leap out at you in suggesting what the programme is about.

No doubt yours will be a *lot* better

Digital Universe is going to be released shortly, if you can do a nice icon for it I would be very happy.

It is an astronomy programme so something rather "spaced out" would be fine.

Don't get me wrong, if I didn't already have an A1-XE I too would be queuing up for one.

It is just not worth getting one as an upgrade as something more powerful would be needed for an Amiga Two.

The reason we have 667MHz in the Sam440 is because there weren't any more poweful SoC (Silicon on Chip) devices available at the time when the Sam was designed, and also the 440EP has a reasonable price tag attached to it.

So there was a technical reason after all, or at least an availabilty issue.

However now there are much more powerful SoC solutions available, ...
So there are a lot of SoC solutions available now, but these have only been available since very recently, and we are not likely to see any completed boards based on these chips this year.

It sounds good for the future though. One day there may be something to upgrade my A1 to

@Kreciu

Maybe Amiga 0.75 would be more appropriate as it is still a downgrade if you already have an Amiga One

I would be expecting new hardware in the 1.5 - 2 GHz range by now, since it is several years since the 800MHz A-ones were released

Why are the CPUs so low powered, can't they source any faster ones ? Or is there some technical reason ?
