Re: Shall we still spend time on AmigaOS or just give up?

Seeing as this conversation is still going,

Hi GarbageOut,

People are always bad-mouthing Windows, but it is the Cadillac of operating systems. I just bought a Microsoft Surface and the touch-enabled Windows 8 is pretty impressive.

You're funny.

I really don't understand the Windows-hate among OS 4 users. Microsoft seems to be making what people want.

Errrr, yeeeaaahhhh.

And where EXACTLY can I contact microsoft and tell them that I DO NOT WANT....

1) The registry (I want to move a program (WHEN/WHERE)EVER I CHOOSE!)
2) An "os" composed of 84,000+ files
3) An "os" that takes 2 minutes to boot up on a quad core 3.4 GHz desktop CPU with 32 Gigs of RAM off of one SSD drive connected to a 3 Gbits per second channel with all power saver options OFF. (It would need to be 13.6 GHz to boot in under 30 seconds! I Wonder how many Amiga 3.1's can be booted with that much computing power in 10 seconds?)
3) A "search" option that THEY MADE that DOES NOT WORK!!!! It is HARD TO USE and LOCKS UP, and that is on BOTH xp and win-dos 7!
4) Don't WANT multi-user
5) I have very often been subjected to "can't put file here".
6) I WANT A RAM DRIVE!!!!!!
7) I WANT INSTANT OFF!!!!!
8) Is it TOO MUCH TO ASK when a program is removed by you, you know, you don't need third party software, to, you know, REMOVE IT!!!!!
9) I WANT A RAD:!!!!!!! (Does bill gates EVEN HAVE AN INKLING OF A CLUE TO what that is???)
10) EVERY thing that (and I stress->)"sort of works" is laid to waste by a dozen things that DO NOT WORK.
11) Where exactly do I complain about a "so called 'os' " that takes 12+, yes, OVER TWELVE hours to reinstall itself on a BRAND NEW FROM THE STORE computer that was manufactured in August 2013!!!! I personally observed this. I needed to re-install his "os" (win8, maybe 8.1, don't know, don't care) after he got conduit tool bar on there and I couldn't just erase the files, and I saw that there was like 3 pages of instructions to get rid of it so I didn't do them. AND THEN, I had to download and install the updates AGAIN on my 100 megabit internet connection.... still took over an hour and a half, and 3 or 4 reboots. Oh the FUN WE HAD! Would make for a GREAT 15 hour infomercial that extols the GREATNESS of their GREAT "os". 15 hours of a guy watching a screen displaying the progress bar of system re-installation.
13) Should being able to compile a BASIC program REALLY NEED 500+ Megabytes of a coding language to do so?
14) I could go on, and on, and on,....

Quote:
Microsoft seems to be making what people want.

I can clearly see what you're saying with that remark, as you choose to compare a $3,500 computer that has a development budget of $700,000 with a $350 computer at retail (BARRING CLOSE-OUT CLEARANCE sales!!!!) with 5,000,000+ coders, and over a BILLION MAN YEARS of programming, and there are TWO competing BEHEMOTHS, one of which ON IT'S OWN is worth OVER half a TRILLION dollar$$$$!!!

Your powers of observation, truly a sight to behold. (You'd make a great doctor.)

Oh and, don't think of yourself as presenting a "devil's advocate" case here as windows has NO LEG TO STAND ON at just how ATROCIOUS AND LOATHSOME A JOKE that it is, as it TRIES to represent itself as a quote *operating system* unquote. It's pathetic and wretchedness level buries the needle on ANY METER you can measure with.

Hi AMIGANS!!!!

NEW AMIGAS!!!!!! TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!!!!!

So, which is the fastest AMIGAONE now*?

To be clear, the the 5040 will be significantly faster than the AmigaOne X1000, right?

And, do either of these have Altivec?

* Built or announced.

P.S. The loss of the netbook is a SERIOUS blow to AMIGA. I hope that some alternative can be found soon. Maybe even the netbook producers may be willing to go for a write-off hit and call A-EON around Christmas time with a large batch offer that can't be refused? :=D HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE????

P.P.S. The NANOSECOND, I can raise enough money for any of these systems, I WILL BE IN A BUYING MOOD! DO NOT DOUBT THIS!

YES, there was one part that wasn't possible on AOS4, but it had not occurred to me that, it COULD BE DONE on AOS1.3 through 3.x!!!!!!

That's right, VOiP on an Amiga 2000, with a 68030 @25 MHz and higher!!!!! (Maybe even a 14 MHz 68020!!!) The BIG obstacle? LOW RAM. Needs about 16 Megs, maybe 32.

Does anyone want to make the first VOiP for AOS4? It could even PROBABLY work on AOS1.3 through 3.x!!!!

Why?

Because, AOS is the SUPREME OS!!!!!!

(Only AOS coders need apply, I think you know who isn't "qualified".)

Hi ScottCabit,

1) I did not know Amiga was able to do that!!!!

Even though not knowing it, that is one extra reason I can heap onto the thousands of reasons why I will never leave AMIGA.

Amiga was so superior to anything else, and I feel that it still is, even in it's current "unfinished" state.

It simply has the "correct fundamental philosophy" at it's core and that I can relate to. BeOS may have been close but it never really was properly available so I've never used or even seen it. Atari's TOS wasn't even close to AmigaOS. Everything else is a bloated shambles and much too convoluted to understand.

Does anyone want to write it in C or Hollywood?

If I was able to code in Hollywood, I might be able to do it. Unfortunately, I've found that I can only code in AMOS. I bought Hollywood thinking I could use it but found that I couldn't.

Re: Ban the uploader

I don't want to argue, but what is the stance of software when "no company seems to own it" and "the author is no longer among us" (it's already been mentioned, and I don't know how to word it more tactfully).

Computing isn't as "new" as it used to be. There are THOUSANDS of abandoned programs with no instructions as to "their fates".

Should "Space Invaders" be gone, if the initial coder is, say, past 90 y/o?

This has to be discussed with some agreement to be reached.

On a personal note: I've written software before and have started writing some software about a month ago (in DarkBASIC, go ahead and laugh), again.... it is NOT easy. It's exhausting, relaxing, annoying, and deeply personal, and addictive. I do feel like it's a part of me, because although the result of everyone's code is nearly the same, the approach taken can be quite different (mind you, there are a limited amount of ways to achieve anything, nonetheless). However, it is YOUR time invested in making the item in question, after all, why not just sit around and wait for someone else to make it?.... and you didn't see anyone else doing it, if it was so important, right?

Songs, movies and books come and go, but are also subject to ownership too, however certain software MUST be made, and it has to be of the highest quality. These people must be respected and paid accordingly.

Until you've written some software yourself, you just don't have a clue about what I'm saying.

Hi AmiDARK,

What is the state of AmiDARK, as in, where can I find a list of all the commands you have working right now?

I'm writing something in Dark BASIC on windows now, and am using 1920*1080, 32 colours. Full screen display (every pixel is being used).

A thing like this wasn't available ~1.5 to 2 years ago, now was it? And it won't be available 2 years from now either.... computers are a moving target, and we are "snails".

Amiga needs a huge CASH transfusion..... A goal of mine is to get that happening one day.

Amiga IS the future of computing.

Well, I haven't heard from him since our last telephone call.

I was talking about making $10,000 a day in profit, and he was saying "you need to raise money yourself, try working at a movie theatre at $11 an hour." Is THAT what an MBA gets you for your ability to give financial advice?

He all like "we spoke on the phone for 10 hours and I'm not billing you for all the advice I'm giving.....". Yeah, we spoke for 10 hours that day (yes, it was 10 hours). He claims that I was wasting his time when in actual fact, HE was wasting HIS time!

Hi ChrisH,

Y Combinator is more interested in technology things, and they seem to be of the belief that $11,000 is enough to launch a company.

I found out that the machine I need costs $45,000. Then I need a place for it to operate for at least 5 months. Need a second process machine that's at least $4,000 too. I was only able to find ONE company in the US that sells it. I could get it overseas, but I'm not sure if I'd get it as no one's telephone number is available, and they probably don't speak English either.
