Tcl/Tk for AmigaOS 4.1?
Just popping in
Just popping in

Is there a working Tcl/Tk 8+ port for AmigaOS?

All I can find is Tcl/Tk 7 for 3.1, and it's an incomplete port, at that.

Native would be preferable, of course, but Cygwin would be OK!

@m3x

Unfortunatly a full CD ISO is too much for me to download. (This is a high speed connection, but I'm limited in how much I can use per month. Sucks, but nothing I can do about it!)

I'm going to have someone else download it and mail the disc to me.

Is this just a Sam440 Linux distro, or is there some sort of test application on it? If it's a test app, perhaps the disc could be pared down some? :)

@Slayer

... You wouldn't worry about 'lots more random crashes'? A computer isn't very usable if you can't trust it to not lose your data constantly!

It looks like the only real 'solution' is to remove half the RAM. And that sucks.

Graphics Corruption & Crashes - Sam440ep-flex, 1024 MB RAM

With 512 megs of RAM, my Sam440 system worked fine.

I added a second 512M DIMM, the same as the other module, and now I get random graphics corruption, usually black lines or dots in the back of windows.

They repeat; for instance, if I get a pattern like:
| | | | |
in a window and drag the window bigger, the pattern adds on to fill it up.

I also sometimes get random black dots near icons.

It does it with Compositing turned on or off, though it does it a lot less without compositing.

And I'm getting a lot more random crashes.

The memory passes a memory test OK.

Using a 128 meg Radeon 9250 card.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: SAM Flex USB Pendrive Support?

I've discovered that my Flex (800 mhz) is /really/ sensitive to the 5 volt line on the power supply.

I had to swap a few power supplies I had lying around before I got USB working reliably. At first some devices would work and other wouldn't - or the keyboard would work until I plugged in a mouse, things like that.

If you have another power supply you can try, you might want to give it a shot.

Re: Printing to Network Printer?

@lazi

Thanks for the tip!

Unfortunatly, I was completely unable to get the HL-4040CDN working with PostScript using either the LPR or RAW protocols.

(I tried it with the PostScript driver on my Mac, and it wouldn't work over those protocols either. Bummer.)

However! I also have a Brother HL-5250DN duplexing monochrome networked laser, and THAT happily accepts PostScript over those protocols!

I'm having some issues with margins (since there are about three places they can be set!) but basically:

I installed lpr.device per the instructions.

I set the Printer preferences to parallel.device and the PostScript printer driver.

I set the PostScript printer preferences to 600 dpi and moved all the margins out to something closer to what my printer can handle (I went with a .20 margin all around and it's working well so far).

Some caveats: Printing can be really slow. The printer spits out pages rapidly enough, but AmiPDF has to think for almost a minute per page at 600x600 DPI.

Printing text from MultiView was quick - it started printing immediatly.

The greyscale dithering kinda sucks but that might be AmiPDF itself.

And I have no idea how to enable the duplexer from AmigaOS.

A potential downer: Using OWB, I can load the printer's web page - it has a built in server to let you control print options and see how much toner you have left, etc - but I can't see or change the settings because the password window never opens.

Using IBrowse that came with AmigaOS 4.1 I can log into the printer - but making changes doesn't work (clicking the Apply button does nothing.)

If I was able to log into the printer and make changes via the web browser, I could enable duplexing that way. (I logged into it from my Mac and set the printer to duplex by default and then the Amiga's output printed double-sided okay, but I can't find a way to enable it from the Amiga itself.)

So on the whole I've got print working alright, but unless I can find a web browser that'll let me work the printer's page, it might not be an ideal OS 4.1 printer.

UPDATE: I got PageStream 3.4beta9 up and running and that prints much faster and with much better greyscale dithering than AmiPDF, so apparently the speed and quality issues were a matter of the app, not the printer.

Printing to Network Printer?
Just popping in
Just popping in

Can anyone help me get my AmigaOS 4.1 machine printing to a network printer?

The printer in question is a Brother HL-4040CDN color duplexing networked laser. It's on the LAN and talking to the other computers just fine.

It's also PostScript-compatible - I tested it with a plain PostScript driver from another computer - so if I can figure out how to get the Amiga to send output TO it, I should be able to print.

The Samba port says not to even bother trying to use it for printing, so does anyone have any suggestions?

@CountRaven

A 5 volt PCI card doesn't FIT in a slot it won't work in...

...unless you turn it around and plug it in BACKWARDS, with the slot cover facing AWAY from the backplane.

It physically won't fit unless you like, bend the metal tab on the slot cover part up and plug it in the wrong way 'round.

So just hold the card up to the PCI slot. If it plugs in the /right way/, with the back of the card at the back of the computer, it's the right voltage for the slot.

There's actually a warning in the Flex manual not to *turn a 5v card around* and plug it in.

@jahc

That.. appears to have worked! Thanks!

The installer implied that checking that box when the keyboard wasn't a real Amiga one would result in keys an Amiga keyboard doesn't have not working, but my Home/End and PgUp/PgDown still work. I haven't tested all of them yet.

@Valiant

I just tried interrupting the boot sequence and going into the UBoot shell, and the \| key DOES work in uboot.

I have no idea why it doesn't work when AOS 4.1 loads.

It's like the keymap is improperly defined but I can't figure out how to fix it.

The key is listed in the keymap, but it's listed as a key to the right f the ' key. The keymaps don't appear to actually map the key scancode to the key in use.

Anyone know of a working keymap editor for OS4.1?

Keyboard Problems - Sam440ep-flex
Just popping in
Just popping in

I got my Sam440ep-flex on Friday and got everything set up and running and everything works great except:

The pipe and backslash key ( \ | ) won't work.

I've tried three keboards (two Apple brand and one Dynex) and all the OTHER keys work. But not the backslash/pipe.

It doesn't matter what keymap I select in OS 4.1, I just can't type a pipe.

Any ideas?

(This may well be an OS4 software issue rather than a hardware one, but I'm really not sure!)
