Re: Simple wishlist for next AmigaOS
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@vox

first off, thanks for the thread! although i'm sure the fine folks at hyperion are aware of what 'remains to be done' for OS4, it's always good to get an idea of what users are actually looking for rather than perceived user wants so long as the requests are respectful and meant as constructive.

@thread

among the features i feel need attention -- having come from outside the amiga community completely -- are the following in my order of importance:

1. memory protection -- this above all else!
2. much better openGL support; improved 3D performance
3. USB 2.0 device support
4. transition to a more modern printing backend to support newer printers/scanners; more intuitive printer setup utility
5. support for NTFS (and ext2, if possible)
6. rework preferences (consolidate, remove, focus on UI, etc.)

additionally, the following would be very helpful, but not related to the OS4 product per se:

1. an OS4 website, including links to popular apps
2. a well-written manual
3. completion and bundling of timberwolf or further funding/development for OWB

these last three are something very important to new-to-amiga people and potentially new-to-amiga folks such as myself. although flash and java are commonly mentioned, neither seems terribly necessary to me. of the two flash seems more important for typical consumers, but with transitions to WebM planned by major content providers, the need for flash video will wane over time.

OS4 email clients and SOCKS proxies
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

folks,

quick question: is there currently an email client on OS4 that can properly handle SOCKS proxies? as far as i can tell, neither YAM nor simplemail has such support.

and if there is none at the moment, does anyone know if such support is in the offing for the future?

In support of Joerg, I want to say that I have used OWB since it first came out, through most of the upgrades to OWB 3.29. Of course there have been some issues along the way, but all in all, I support his efforts. I am currently using OWB 3.29.

As for any further upgrades or improvements to OWB, I am not a programmer or a developer so I cannot help there. As a user, I can speak with feedback and donations.

I have used IBrowse, AWeb APL Lite, OWB, NetSurf and Timberwolf Alpha 1 release. In my humble opinion, Timberwolf needs alot more work before it will replace any of the others. Currently, I use OWB 3.29 and NetSurf 2.5 as my main web browsers

i have to concur here. this is my first post here, and i am happy that it can be to give over a much-needed thank you to joerg for all of his work on building an OWB-based browser for OS4.

those of you who post over on aw.net might recall that i recently joined the amiga community, buying a SAM440ep-flex earlier this year, never having used any amiga before. i would not have done this without a useable browser, and that was and remains joerg's OWB.

i certainly hope that comments made, whether intended or not to be critical, will not have a negative impact on joerg. i hope this thread and the replies herein demonstrate just how much the community appreciates his work and our hopes for continued development.

i know timberwolf is out there, but frankly it simply does not compare to the OWB we have now. i was very concerned that its introduction to the community would prompt a slowing-down or outright halt on OWB development. but i -- and many OS4 enthusiasts -- would rather have OWB.
