Dont think so.

The last thing we got was cmake iirc

i'd be stunned if we didn't have automake/aclocal and the like running natively on OS4. there is an older build of automake 1.10 on aminet for OS3, but i have no idea if it will work on our systems.

this thread, by the way, might get more helpful responses over at os4coding.net.

Re: need advice on SAM460EX purchase
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@Hans

Quote:
That's a pity, but if it doesn't suit your needs, then your decision is the right one. For me personally, I use my Sam460ex mostly for software development. So, I don't mind using the beta audio and having no 3D. I know that both are coming.

that makes sense; whereas i use the system for my daily, non-work computing needs. and since listening to audio streaming is a big part of that while playing quake2, et al, waiting to an undetermined date doesn't work for me. if i knew that the openGL stack was coming along nicely and ross had been able to finish the SM502 audio driver recently and OS4.2 was shipping in the next month or so, then it would be a different story.

Quote:
Having said that, I think that you're putting too much emphasis on "third-party card(s)." Plugging extra cards into a desktop computer is as normal as spreading jam on bread. The Sam460ex always was designed to use a plug-in graphics card; that's what the 16x PCIe connector is for. If the on-board graphics didn't exist, then you wouldn't have even thought twice about having to get one (which can be done when you order the machine).

i don't mind adding third-party cards; my SAM440ep-flex already has all three slots occupied with a video card, a wireless card, and an ESI juli@ sound card. the wireless card occasionally gets swapper out for a catweasel when i'm moving data from old C64 or amiga floppies to images on my SAM's internal storage.

if anything i need more slots.

the issue here with the SAM460EX is that i have to purchase an additional SATA card and an additional audio card whether i wanted to or not, and given the already high price of the board compared with the incremental performance improvement over my current SAM, it's seems a bit unfortunate.

Quote:
Likewise, the SATA card would be a good idea, even if all drivers were done. Plus, they're cheap.

It looks like wanting an audio card too may have been a tipping point against buying. Given that the flex-ATX form-factor offers only three slots and they're all different, finding the right combination for SATA+Audio+Graphics could be a challenge.

you're quite right. the audio card was the tipping point. i'd quite like to use my existing ESI juli@, but i'll need the sole PCI slot for a SATA card, so i'd need to replace that with something PCIe-hosted instead.

Quote:
Out of curiosity, what would it take to get you to buy? Finished audio drivers? DMA support for the on-board Sata2 port? Both? I'm not going to include 3D drivers here, as those are expected for AmigaOS 4.2.

more money.

in all seriousness i think i've just come to the conclusion that given the expansion situation, it's just not the system for me for all of my needs. once we get DMA support for the SATA2 controller then i'd probably purchase one and use it as a media center for my children. my current SAM does that rather well: all of their 1940s disney cartoons, nature films, etc. are on there and they love using the machine. they actually 'get' how to use it as opposed to my wife's windows box or my solaris systems.

of course having 'one-click' access to their videos from amidock might have something to do with it.

the lower-power consumption of the systems is actually a big thing for me living in connecticut, which has the highest electricity rates in the USA. i've already got so many machines running at any given moment, the last thing i need is an increase in my bills if the kids forget to turn the machine off before they go to sleep. and the no-noise factor means we can keep it in my bedroom without the missus unhappy about the fan noise. and then there's AOS and all of its advantages and ....

i love my current SAM. what i want is a system that has the same (or greater) expansion capabilities with full driver support down the line and significantly greater performance. and i'm willing to pay a pretty penny for it as well. the SAM460EX just doesn't offer those things at the moment: what is does offer is exceptional graphics performance, and that's why i considered it in the first place.

we'll have to see things play out this year. heck, i'll probably get one anyway. it's hard to keep me away from kit like this.

Re: need advice on SAM460EX purchase

Not too shy to talk

@thread

many thanks to everyone for their replies. i have decided not to purchase one, though, at least not at the current time. the problems i have seem to be:

1. the on-board SATA is still operating in PIO mode
2. to get reasonable SATA performance, i'll need a third-party card
3. the on-board audio driver is still in beta
4. to have fully supported audio, i'll need a third-party card
5. the on-board video is, frankly, slow
6. to get cracking 2D performance, i'll need a third-party card
7. even with the best radeon HD card, i will no longer be able to play 3D games
8. there are no supported SATA chipsets which are PCIe hosted
9. PCIe 1x audio cards with supported chipsets aren't exactly compelling

and all of this might be OK normally, but the board is nearly $1000 USD, and the performance boost over my current SAM is very nice, but with all of the issues above, it just isn't worth the money -- at least for me.

and this is the biggest problem i have. it seemed the best option given the current hardware landscape: the older amigaone boards have any number of issues that make me hestitate purchasing one second-hand; the pegasos boards are excellent, but very old, and will require all the cards listed plus a card for USB2 devices; and the X1000, which despite it's price offers everything i want (except for 3D gaming), it's effectively not available and there is no way of knowing if it ever will be again.

i'm bummed. i do love my SAM, i just wish it was faster.

it has the sii3114 chipset on it.

so now i hope that uboot will see the card. is this one for test with acube??

there must also be a PCIe-to-PCI bridge on the card as well. i thought sil3114 controllers only have PCI interfaces? it would certainly allow more flexibility if it works since the PCI slot would be freed up -- although it's a bit pricey.

can anyone confirm whether DMA works with the on-board SATA support? if not, then regardless of using an internal DVD drive or not, i'd want a SATA card that the current drivers support fully.

need advice on SAM460EX purchase
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

guys,

ok. i love my SAM but i want more performance. i don't want to purchase used hardware, so that means my only option is the SAM460EX, which is fine. except i want working audio, the use of my SATA DVD drive and hard drive, and quick graphics.

so this means i cannot use the on-board video, the on-board SATA support, or the on-board audio (due to drive issues). but given the slots available, i'm having a spot of trouble:

1. there are no PCIe SATA cards with chipsets currently supported by OS4.1, so i'll have to use up the PCI slot for that purpose.

2. the PCIe 16x slot will be taken up by a radeonHD card -- except there is no 3D support -- and choosing the one that offers the most performance now is a little tricky

3. the only slot left for the audio card is the PCIe 1x slot

so, here are the questions to answer:

1. does anyone know of an audio card fully supported by OS4.1 and AHI that can fit the PCIe 1x mechanical slot?

2. which PCIe radeonHD video card is the most performant with the current drivers?

3. does any of this matter? should i just hold out for OS4.2? should i just hold out for the X1000 (although i'm not convinced i'll be able to purchase one before they sell out yet again)?

my biggest issue is that everything i have in my SAM440EP-flex is fully supported: the audio card, the radeon 9250, etc. there are no compromises. it's just not very fast. i've waited so long to get my hands on a X1000 that i've nearly given up on ever having one. if the first batch sold out so quickly, and we still don't have official confirmation from A-EON that any more are coming any time soon, i'm tired of waiting. so the next best thing is the SAM460EX.

come on, guys, help me with my enthusiasm level here and convince me the SAM460EX is not only possible, but a good choice!

Re: AmigaOS 4 on USB stick

Not too shy to talk

@TheDaddy

It's a good question. I've tried multiple methods of booting from a USB stick, such as partitioning it with media toolbox, installing the bootloader, formatting with SFS/0, etc. that didn't work. i've tried using DD to copy the OS4.1 install CD image to the stick to boot from it. that didn't work. and of course i had to set up uboot to boot from the USB device at startup in both cases.

that said i'm an amiga noob, so it's possible there is a method. i'd quite like for there to be one as well. regardless of the inability to boot, i have a USB stick partitioned exactly like my system and work disks and use it as a backup device. never needed it, but nice to know it's there.

So I can plug a set of headphones and a MIC to the front connectors on my computer case...

Are there headers on the SAM440ep to attach these cables?

there are headers on the board, but the pin package is non-standard. so unless you physically wire-up each pin discreetly, no, you can't. and i wouldn't expect that to happen any time soon: customers have been asking for a solution since 2009.

Best C64, Spectrum 48K, MAME, Playstation 1, 2 and 3(?), DOS PC and Nintendo64 emulator for OS4.1?

for all variety of commodore 8-bit systems, including the C64, there is the incomparable VICE. it works rather well, even on our lowly SAMs.

for the playstation, you'll want FPSE. the version on os4depot.net is a bit stale. more recent versions can be found on the author's web site. the same author also has an old N64 emulator, but as @kas1e said, it's not very performant and it tends to crash more often than actually run anything. YMMV.

chris young has been responsible for the OS4 version of the FUSE emulator for the spectrum series. you can find links to the latest version on his site or download directly from aminet. there are also utilities available on os4depot as well.

for DOS systems there really is only DOSbox. @Corto tends to keep the OS4 version up-to-date with the project source tree. you can find the latest version on os4depot. don't expect too much on your SAM -- for example, i wouldn't try running doom or anything. but older DOS games work well.

we have an older version of MAME, but it works well. you'll want to pick up the port itself as well as the third-party GUI. steffen has rejoined the amiga community of late now that the X1000 is shipping, so hopefully active development will pick back up again.

there are also other great emulators out there, including ones for the original NES, the SNES, various apple2 systems (including the IIgs), the atari 8-bit systems, the atari ST series, the SAM coupe, the amstrads, etc., etc., etc. although my x64 machines would make more sense, i tend to run a bunch of emulators on my SAM since it's where i keep all my 'fun' stuff. have fun, and let us know what else you need!

So it is not possible to have each program in each window? Was this possible before or was it like the picture you added now?

if you have an OS4.1 installation updated with update 1 or later, you can still use the picasso96pip driver -- but the color table appears hosed: everything in the window will appear pink-ish or green-ish.

you could, in the past, launch applications from their workbench icon, and, with appropriately altered .bat files (no panel, no desktop manager, no window manager, etc.), it would appear to run within a workbench window. so i would use abiword or gnumeric alongside tunenet and wookiechat. sadly that didn't last long once i updated to update 1.

oh well. hopefully it will get addressed one day. the performance is better when amicygnix is assigned its own screen anyway. :)

some holiday listening: ART episode 52 just posted
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

folks,

looks like rich and the folks at amized studios have posted a new episode of the 'amiga roundtable' just in time for the holidays. from their web site:

Quote:
Merry Christmas to one and all! This episode is just some un-aired audio I had that was kind of dated and I just couldn’t get it out in time. So I figured now was as good as anytime to just “get it out there”.

So the audio is just some segments of interviews with Rogue, one of the Hyperion developers of OS4. The first clip is from when the big news at the time was the A1 X1000. But we didn’t know it was th X1000. Then the second clip is from just after AmiWest. Bill P and I were getting ready to record an episode and we realized the guys didn’t know when we were going to record. So I was looking for a temporary co host with Bill. I saw Rogue online, so I talked him into coming on for an impromptu interview. It was exactly A list material I was asking him, but it did give me some audio for an episode. I also had to wait till the guys at Hyperion cleared the audio so he wasn’t releasing any info he wasn’t supposed to.

Basically, we talked about the new netbook, and killed a few rumors that were floating about him and his brother. So nothing really earth shattering. But still, it’s some good conversation I figured I would release to share.

And before anyone else tries to start a rumor whay all this hasn’t come out till now, it because things got busy, the audio was dated and I figured no one would care because the info was old. But since I wanted to do something for Christmas, I thought this would still be cool. I do hope you all like it. So Merry Christmas and we’ll see you next episode!

SimpleMail 0.38 Released!
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

folks,

looks like the simplemail team has cranked out another release for the holiday season. according to their web page, the release changes for v0.38 includes:

Quote:
* Applied a workaround to circumvent possible crashes with SSL IMAP connection on AmigaOS4

* Fixed a problem with IMAP login and passwords containing spaces

* Added a new "Complete mails" mode to IMAP folders. If this mode is enabled, complete emails are downloaded in the background rather than on demand. The mode can be changed within the folder settings, which can be brought up via menu entry "Folder/Options..."

* New progress monitor system. When a task is active, a progress overview is displayed in the status line. More details about pending tasks can be viewed by pressing the button next to the progress bar. Clients for this subsystem are currently only the IMAP subsystems that are responsible for downloading mail headers and complete mails.

* Live OS4 compiles of SimpleMail can be downloaded now from http://www.sebastianbauer.info/jenkins/job/SimpleMail/ Only the binary is distributed in this form at the moment, not the full archive. Note that version obtained from this location are considered as experimental for now and are no official release versions.

if you're not already using YAM, or need IMAP4 and HTML support in your amiga mail reader, check out simplemail!

on the contrary i'm very impressed. i can't even get GLquake to run on my SAM-flex no matter what i do. it just hangs the system.
