Re: Are you a MICROA1 Owner?
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

@Mikey_C

I purchased my MicroA1-C near the end of 2004. IBM PPC 750 GX with 256 MB RAM.

At the time, I thought it was a cool little system with lots of potential. It is still the fastest "Amiga" that I have ever owned. I use it every day and I have come to terms with its limitations. While I simpathize with the cause, I believe it is too late now.

Currently running AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2
Screenmode = Radeon 7000 at 1024x768 ARGB32
Using Default theme called 1024x768 OS4.0 Look
3D acceleration disabled
This gives me approx 24,866,944 bytes of available Video RAM after my system finishes booting.

Typically, I run only one major application at a time. If I am using OWB, I don't use Timberwolf or NetSurf at the same time. Same with the paint programs, if I am using PPaint, I don't have TVPaint running at the same time. Most of the time, I run with a web browser open, NotePad open and possibly AmigaAMP playing music in the background. I don't have as much experience with TuneNet, so I am not sure what programs I can run at the same time as TuneNet. I use Final Writer 97 on its own screen.

I use the onboard IDE interfaces, with a hard drive on one interface and a DVD-ROM combo drive on the other interface. Due to some issues with my current hard drive, I have been running in auto-discovery mode (with best PIO) for many months.

I have my rear USB ports disabled to allow me to boot from my AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1 CD-R when I need to do so. (Like some others, I had a hell of a time installing AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1 ... then someone discovered that the system would be stable if we disabled two USB ports).

@joerg

Thanks for the update.

@Kicko

Same on my system. I can open local files from my FFS partition or my SFS partition or my RamDisk but not my JXFS partitions.

[edit]
There is a way to open files on my JXFS partitions using the file:// url. Since I got shot down last time, I will let you guys figure it out for yourselves.

@djrikki

Cool some of my images did arrive afterall. I still couldn't see them half an hour after I submitted them last night. The actual background png file is too large and amigans refuses to accept a download.

The one shown in my screenshots is from the official AmigaOS 4.1 AmigaOne version CD-ROM.

@djrikki

I made an honest effort. Changed my background to one of the default ones showing a large boing ball coming out of the clouds. Grabbed the requested images. First upload was rejected because my first image was to large. Grabbed the image again at slightly lower quality. Second upload was rejected because amigans did not like the mime type.

Here is an example of my real Workbench showing Timberwolf and my disk icons and my main Amidock.

@amigadad

I get the same tonight. Was working fine a few days ago. If I recall correctly, TuneNet goes to some site to "scan" the information it needs for the list of stations. Either that site is down or the list is not available.

I am simply giving my observations regarding OWB 3.28 on my MicroA1.
I do not know why it works this way.

"Open local ..." will open an html file if it is on my FFS partition.
"Open local ..." will open an html file if it is on my SFS partition.
"Open local ..." will not open any html file on any of my JXFS partitions.

file://minuet/dh1/webpage/myfile.html will open an html file on my JXFS partition called DH1:

---[ SNIP ... see update below ]---

It is the same if I use OWB 3.27.
I did not keep OWB 3.26 so I do not remember what happened there.

OWB 3.25 "Open Local..." works just fine on all my partitions.

---
redfox

UPDATE...
I have done some more experimentation today. It is not looking for my hostname. It is simply looking for something to be inserted between the second and third "/".

file://minuet/dh1/webpage/myfile.html ... works
file://redfox/dh1/webpage/myfile.html ... also works
file://xyz/dh1/webpage/myfile.html ... also works
file://g/dh1/webpage/myfile.html ... also works

file:///dh1/webpage/myfile.html ... OWB 3.28 will not display file

@joerg

I can also confirm that I can access an html file using "Open Local .." if the file is on my Sys: partition which is FFS longnames or on my DH3: partition which is SFS. If the file is on any of my JXFS partitions, I can not display it using "Open Local..".

Thanks for the tip Kicko.

@cha05e90

Update ... see post #54

No I don't have SAMBA. I use DHCP on my network interface and I have defined the hostname for my MicroA1 as minuet. This works well with our router on our home network. All our computers, game machines and wireless devices use DHCP. Many of them are identified by a hostname. So, for example, my MicroA1 is minuet, one of the pc's is hppav, the laptop is laptop.

I use SMTPpost with my homebrew sendmail program. SMTPpost requires a few environment variables, one of which is a nodename.

hostname for network interface = minuet
env:nodename = minuet

So, when I request OWB to access
file://minuet/dh1/webpage/html.html

OWB is asking for hostname minuet to provide the requested file. Minuet is the hostname of my MicroA1, so my MicroA1 searches for the file in the reqested partition and directory. I don't have a sniffer so I don't know if my system actually sends out the request to my router or if OS4 and roadshow are smart enough to intercept the request internally.

Update ... see post #54

I discovered that I could read my local files if I used my hostname as follows:

file://minuet/dh1/webpage/myfile.html

hostname of my MicroA1 system = minuet
partition = DH1:
directory = webpage
filename = myfile.html

Works fine typing into the url string or as a bookmark.

@Templario

I did the same as colinw and graffias79

SetPatch ADDCHIPRAM=2 QUIET

and now PPaint no longer gives an error about starting up in "Memory Save Mode."

Also, in the program, make sure you turn off both of these;
Settings->Graphics->15Khz Video
Settings->Graphics->Amiga Blitter

Sometimes I get a crash with DSI error if I fill the screen with a single colour. Apparently this is one of the bugs.

Re: NetSurf 2.5

@Chris

Thanks for the quick reply. I have several versions of NetSurf on my DH1: (stuff) partition including NetSurf 3.0 (Development) SVN 9563 (12.09.2009). I couldn't remember if I had tried NetSurf 3.0 since I installed AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1, so I wasn't sure if the NetSurf 2.5 installer found something unexpected in one of the common system directories on my main system partiion.

In any case the graphics.library version of NetSurf 2.5 works fine so far on my MicroA1. The MicroA1 has only 32MB of VRAM, so is somewhat limited when full compositing transparency is running.

I will try some other sites.

Thanks,

NetSurf 2.5

Following a tip on amigaworld that NetSurf 2.5 was released, I have downloaded and installed it on my MicroA1. Currently using the graphics.library static build with the default ("native") theme.

I received a GR with DSI error during install (I chose to install the static graphics.library version with default theme).

However, NetSurf 2.5 seemed to work fine after that.

I found later that I had to manually move the SObjs files from the archive into my system SObjs drawer. I will also check for the other files.

First impressions ....

Working great on amigaworld and amigans, have not visited other sites yet.

Thanks to Chris Young.

Re: OWB3.23 praise and question thread

How do I get OWB 3.23 to respond to my scrollwheel on my mouse. Sometimes it works for scrolling up a web page. Sometimes, if I am really lucky, it will work for scrolling down a web page. Usually, it will scroll down just a bit and sit there. Then I have to use the vertical scrollbar or the up/down arrows in the bottom right corner of the window. As far as I can remember, it worked when I first installed OWB 3.23 on my AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1 system.

The exact moment I start to whine about this issue in the forums, it suddenly works again just long enough for me to think I was dreaming.

The most recent version of Cinnamon Writer 0.69 crashes with a DSI error on my machine. Seems to happen if I list font size on default settings.

Earlier versions are more stable for me.

Compositing (transparency effects) turned off to conserve video RAM.

UPDATE...

Not crashing now after I deleted all copies of Cinnamon Writer and unachived the new lha file again.

My system has been acting up lately. Maybe time to format disk and start from scratch again.
