Re: USB Printers & OS4.1 on Samflex
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@bitman
It was Mrodfr who proposed the bounty, I would suggest to just lend him the Printer for a while instead. When a problem with the Sam sound driver arised Acube sent a Sam to Davy Wentzler to fix the problem.

How may days would it take to wotk on this Driver?

Let's see if gets nailed in the next release, anyway, my post was in reply to the "bounty" proposition...

@Mrodfr
Best course of action would be for an interested party to let him borrow, the printer.
Ship the printer to him (and Paypal the money for him to ship it back), and when he has finished adding support he can send it back to you along with updated drivers!

The guy that sends the printer will have the added advantage to test the new drivers first and be 100% sure that at least his printer model WILL work (as it was the one tested in the first place)!

A few "touch ups" could come with a Hot Fix (ie:USB 2.0) but why wait for all those other tasty goods?

I say, naaaaahaaaa give it to me now!!!

Re: ImageFX (NovaDesign) purchase problems

Not too shy to talk

@ChrisH
The good thing about ImageFX (at least the latest versions) is its Photoshop quality blending methods and the fact that is among the fastest at calculating filters (good for large images) moreover it gave the possibility to use the code of certain Photoshop filters and use them in ImageFX (adding a big quantity this way).
Studio 4.5 needs a better GUI and a few additional features and you would probably never touch Photoshop again, that is why a new 5.0 version would be ideal to nail those few shortcomings.

I still hope for Nova Design to sprout back or at least sell the application to DiscreetFX or something...

@Thread
Actually as an old NovaDesign customer myself (my original V2 box and upgrades up to 3.0 are still with me) I would be really interested in both Studio4.5 and even more in a new 5.0 version specifically tailored for OS4.1.

I hope there will be positive developments regarding this...

@Troels
I believe that if they do a kernel extension they will include memory protection for new apps and sandbox for legacy + they could add PAE support for 36-Bit memory addressing (fully supported on the Titans, up to 64GB in this mode).

Multi-core would be a natural evolution.

@angelheart
Pretty much, "The Amiga OS and all that is associated with the OS" leave no room for doubts.

As pointed out by Hyperion guys they even ruled out in the settlement any possibilities of farther hindrance (like selling 3.1 to competing parties too or coming out with other OSs with slightly modified names like "OS Five").

"Even if" I don't think any OS1 patent would hold true to 4.1 as there are a ton of differences that alone would justify total ownership by Hyperion, BUT let's say something comes up. How many days till Hyperion changes that small part of the OS and replaces it with a new implementation they fully own?

They could simply put out a "dot" release with the alleged part taken out, already replaced with something new they completely own.

This "pseudo" problem sounds like fud to me...

Re: Its over! Hyperion won!

@angelheart
There were a TON of Amiga patents, some were part of AmigaOS, others were NOT. and Gateway owned the latter even during Amiga inc golden days.

Amiga inc bought AmigaOS from Gateway In FULL (they did NOT license it):
"
Here is what was acquired from Gateway:

1. All trademarks logo's etc.
2. All existing inventory of Amiga International
3. All existing licenses.
4. License to All Amiga patents (Gateway still owns the patents, but we are able to use them).
5. All web sites, and registered domain names.
6. The Amiga OS and all that is associated with the OS.
7. The Amiga operation as it exists today.
"

The patents that were only"licenced" and not purchased were all the remaining ones (in case they were needed).

Amiga OS was sold in FULL to Amiga Inc. and the patents they mention do not belong to either Exec, AmigaDos or Workbench (as all software technologies used in there belong to Amiga Inc. after their purchase)

And of course Amiga Inc. owns 3.1, Hyperion only has exclusive rights to use its technologies in order to build future OSs (which will belong in FULL to Hyperion).
Ownership of 3.1 is not put into question by this deal.

@Plaz

AmigaOS is described as the sum of Exec, AmigaDos and Workbench.
These 3 are further described as the sum of other features which basically ARE what Hyperion uses.
Amiga OS was sold in FULL to Amiga Inc. and the patents they mention do not belong to either Exec, AmigaDos or Workbench (as all software technologies used in there belong to Amiga Inc.)

I believe the story ends there.

For chit chat sake i will add that the more we go farther the more new stuff will take the place of the older leaving no legacy parts whatsoever, sooner rather than later (OS5 will probably have a new kernel, Xul in place of reaction/gadtools etc. and who knows what more).

By the way, after switching to PowePC at the time of the first OS4, Hyperion differently reprogrammed (for a different CPU) the whole AmigaOS, new source code and methodology that might have already lost resemblance with the old one to the point where it is to be considered new and patentable parts in every possible way.

In the past a lot of court cases where different implementations, built from scratch for different hardware/CPUs and registered under new names, were judged in favor (and registered to) new legitimate owners, as they were considered totally New Products whose resemblance with the old ones was totally lost.

But alas the more they go ahead the more they move farther away from the past.

@Plaz
I believe the patents refer to Amiga OCS and AGA, and licence to use them in future projects (including but not limited to emulation).
AmigaOS however was totally SOLD to them, which means Gateway does not own a cent of it.
Now Amiga OS is 100% in Hyperion's hands, as far as we are concerned it is a closed case.

Can you point those documents out? I am under the impression that Gateway (or their current owners) have no commanding options nor privileges over the OS parts, thus what they think is totally irrelevant I presume...

I don't think they own the OS and they certainly do not own Commodore (not logos not operations as both were sold to other companies as per Wikipedia).
I am under the impression they sold the OS to Amiga inc and kept HW patents that's all.

Thanks can't wait. As you might have guessed from me having a an OpenGL book, I once wanted to do some programming (not just using 3DSMax+some scripting) but I never got the time.
I did some simple stuff in Lite C though ^__^

It would be great to use your engine on the Amiga!

Keep us posted!!

I can't believe it, I come back after years of absence and I already stated in another thread how I felt lucky I got to use Timberwolf and Blender in near future (not to mention how I felt about AmigaOS4.1 being the sole Amiga to me) and now I get to witness this!!!

It's either I'm luky or that I also bring luck

I'm so happy, my (OURS ) best friend Amiga is more alive than ever!!

Cheers to all!!!
