0 fps I get for the first Arena (Tier 1),

The third arena (Tier 1) is much more fun, because here I get 18-30fps

Strange, that the speed is so different in these arena-levels.

Yes, that is strange.

Quote:

Unfortunately, the game is still not playable. Even with 30 fps, you only can move forwards/backwards/left/right very, very slowly. (Seems that the keyboard input is catched too slow??). Looking around with the mouse is fast , though.

That sounds like it's not an OpenGL problem. It's strange that it manifests itself only on the SAM though.

Quote:

Moreover, after installing OpenArena and starting it, everything is "green", means GL-Mode doesn't seem to work. In Software-rendering the textures, etc. look old-fashoned/unnice -- don't know how to describe it.
In Addition, after switching to NON-GL-Mode, It's not possible to switch back. In the settings, you can set GL-Mode to ON but appearently this has no effect. The screen re-initialises, but the "look" stays the same.

AFAIK, the greenish look is a known bug in the Warp3D drivers that is being investigated. I thought that Quake-3, and therefore OpenArena didn't have a software mode.

Apart from the first arena running so slowly, the rest are probably due to issues with other parts of the system.

@nexus

Yes, the debug file would have to be huge for it to have any impact on speed. It was worth examining though even if it was unlikely.

Does 9000 have any issues with Q3, by the way?

EDIT: Q3 indeed puts stuff (console prints) to serial, but not per frame basis.

I don't have Q3, so I've only tested OpenArena. I used OpenArena as a test case for getting rid of a number of graphics bugs in MiniGL (e.g., missing walls).

As for the debug output. With MiniGL 1.5 I left in a debug statement in a function that Q3 called and, as a result, Q3 slowed down. I quickly removed the output and uploaded a new version which fixed that problem. There is a small possibility that something like that is causing trouble on the SAM.

It works! But it is far to slow -- even on lowest possible resolution and gfx-details. I guess, I get 1 or 0.5 Frames per second :)

Unbelievable that it should be playable on a A1@800Mhz.

Anyway, good job! works without crashes

nexus

That surprises me. I know that some games are playable with my Radeon 9000 pro that are too slow with a Radeon 7000 card, but the Radeon M9 in the SAM is a 9000 series card. I would have expected OpenArena to be running at a reasonable frame-rate on the SAM.

Does anyone have any specs for the Radeon M9 so that we can compare it to other cards? Also, can you please check if something is spitting out debug information while you're playing the game ("dumpdebugbuffer ram:log.txt"); there shouldn't be, but that would slow things down.

I have no idea what the actual memory requirements are, but I have an A1XE G4 @ 933 Mhz with 512 MB and a Radeon 9000 pro graphics card and it runs without problems.

But actually,
Amiga OS 4 Own Radeon Warp3D Drivers ?
Does MiniGL own Radeon drivers under AmigaOS4 ?

MiniGL uses Warp3D for rendering.

Are these some tutorials and samples for MiniGL on AmigaOS 4?

I have a few examples on my website. However, some of them require MiniGL 2.0 and updated header files (it's coming). MiniGL 2.0 beta was included with Amiga OS 4.1. If you have Amiga OS 4.0, download MiniGL 1.5. You should actually be able to use GLUT examples from elsewhere simply by adding -DMINIGL to the compile parameters (this requirement has been removed in MiniGL 2.0).

If you need any more help, please let me know. I'd be happy to write more templates/examples if they help.

@kvasir

Light guns won't work with a scandoubler because the scan-doubler changes the display timing. It also won't work with anything but a CRT (no LCD).

Yes, there are more donations while you're featured, so it does work. It also "works" in the sense that it motivates people like me to keep going if someone else likes my work enough to put some money on it.

Hans

P.S. thanks to all who have donated. It'll most likely be going toward a new DVI monitor so that I can get my RadeonHD driver working with DVI monitors too (only tested with VGA so far).

I'm guilty of not getting round to a proper install script. The problem is that, if you haven't written one before and you want to get the program out there, you really can't be bothered. I'll make sure that I have an install script for the next item that needs it.

@all

Please find someone else to port the browser since Hyperion are busy. I'd rather that they get round to porting MESA so that we have full OpenGL and implementing other items that are needed for bringing more software to the platform.

Anyone can work on porting a browser; only the OS 4 dev team can improve the actual OS.

Great answer !

When you tell "Get working yourself", you are right but I have to add many developers are there to help, so "Get working yourself" does not mean "Get working alone". You did not say that but I just want to tell RacerX, Troels and others that they can feel confident if they want to start programming.

Correct. But someone has to take the first big step in order to get a project started. After that you may find that others will want to help out.

@Joerg

Have the AWeb guys ever contacted you? IIRC, the plan was to create a new AWeb built around the KHTML toolkit (i.e., webkit). I have no idea how easy/hard it would be to rip out its display engine and replace it with OWB's core, but it is an idea.

Yes unfortunately there's too many people hoping for Mr Someone

And unfortunately a Mr. Someone is not enough for such a big project

Not being a developer myself (don't tell me to learn code, pls!) all I can do is hope and contribute with a little $$ for those who actually produce something in our community.

You should learn to code.

I know that software development isn't for everyone and the donations are appreciated. I wish that I could work on my projects full time, but I also need money.

@people who can code

If you want to see something, then that Mr Someone is you. When people were moaning about no display-lists in MiniGL, I realized that no-one else was going to do it, so I did it myself. Now MiniGL 2.0 has advanced to the point where we could get something like Blender working (with others helping out too). Likewise, I decided that I couldn't wait until someone else wrote drivers for newer graphics cards, so I started working on it myself. The same is true for software developed by other developers such as Joerg, Afxgroup, Salass00, Rigo, SpotUP, and many others (who I can't think of right now).

So, if you see something that needs programming, and have the ability to it yourself, don't wait around for someone else to pick up the project and don't hope that Hyperion will do it. Get working yourself.

Re: PPC assembly

@TSK

A quick search for: "powerpc stw" will get you links to websites that document the instruction set, including IBM's PowerPC stw page.

For your example:
Quote:

TSK wrote:
Do anybody know what PPC command stw for example: stw r0,4(r11) do ? Are those two registers used as data registers or memory address registers in that example ?

This would store the contents of register 0 into the address given by register 11 + an offset of 4. So if r0 = 100 and r11 = 9000 then this would write 100 to address 9004.

Don't want to disappoint, but DVD menu support is rather low priority on my list, because:

- DVD movies can be enjoyed without the menu
- It is very major effort, giving only a relatively small added value to the program
- Support for other movie formats like FLV/MOV is more sought after by most people and thus has higher priority

Understood. However, I've had several DVDs (can't remember what titles, sorry) that have the main movie hidden so that it's impossible to find by just browsing through the different streams on the DVD. They have hidden it somehow.

I'm not saying that "new" hardware is not needed but... :D.

I'm talking from the site of the common user.

Why would I work on Radeon 7000/9000 drivers? I am not involved in development of drivers for the Radeon 7000 or 9000. That's not my responsibility and, if I tried to do everything, I'd never finish anything.

I'm working on R5xx/R6xx drivers because I want a graphics card that has shaders, etc. I will not be working on older cards.

The audio codec needs to be downloaded separately from avcodec. Download a52_codec.lha and dca_codec.lha. And yes, DvPlayer is pretty good, although I really wish that we could have DVD menus supported too.
