@Elwood

True, but I haven't probably had the chance to say "microkernel" since my student days. I missed the thread the first time around... but looks like others did as well.

Was hoping to see XH558 at Duxford recently, but one of the engines was considered high risk for flight

@fishy_fis

On UNIX systems, I'd use cron. Not tried any of these, but having a browse on Aminet yields:

http://aminet.net/package/util/cli/ctask11

http://aminet.net/package/util/time/CyberCron15

http://aminet.net/package/util/cdity/Docket (OS 4.0 but seems to have been ported from an older app)

Okay, here's some thoughts from memory, so not checked:

Graphics and Sound: AmigaOS 2.0 and Windows 3.0 both supported whatever the hardware supported, though Windows 3.0 didn't initially ship with sound support.

AmigaOS 2.0 - pre-emptive multitasking microkernel architecture
Windows 3.0 - cooperative multitasking architecture (I think) on top of DOS

AmigaOS - no memory management support
Windows - supported memory management

AmigaOS - minimum of 256KB of RAM ?
Windows - minimum of 640KB of RAM ?

AmigaOS - minimum of 7.2 MHz 68000
Windows - minimum of 4 MHz 8086 ?

AmigaOS - fits on 1x 880k floppy disk
Windows - required 10 MB of hard disk space

AmigaOS - ARexx application scripting support
Windows - no scripting support except limited DOS scripts

AmigaOS - multiple screen capability each with independent resolution
Windows - single screen only, fixed resolution

AmigaOS - FFS supported 32 character filenames, max 4GB disk partition, max 2GB file size ?
Windows - FAT 16 supported 8+3 character filenames, max 2GB disk partitions, 2GB max file size.

Re: Sourcecode for abandonware
Just popping in
Just popping in

Abandonware is a bit of a legal grey area in many countries. It's still subject to copyright, for now, but your chances of the copyright owner taking action for the illegal use of the software is pretty slim. In some cases the owner isn't worried, in some cases there is no legal owner, in others the legitimate owner might not even realise they are the owner.

Tracking down the owner could be a pretty major effort in some cases, and even then there's no guarantee they still have the source code. What are the chances that Electronic Arts still have the source to DPaint II (or even IV) lying around somewhere?

Not trying to sound too pessimistic though. Your best bet is to track down the owners of your favourite bit of abandonware - start with the low-hanging fruit like those from companies still in business.

Re: AmigaOne Debian Etch Kernel Panic

@agafaster

One possibility to check first is that either the ISO is corrupt or wasn't downloaded/burnt correctly.

A very quick Google query (my lunch is about ready) brings up something interesting. Although it's Debian Lenny (but Etch gets a mention), it seems similar:

Just realised I didn't post a Hello when I joined in October.

Hello

My name's John. I've been an Amiga user since 1990, when I bought an A500 after saving for three years. I currently own 2x A500s, an A4000/030 and an AmigaOne XE G4 - I will be adding a SAM to the lineup early next year and plan to start work on a few Amiga/Mac/Linux software project ideas I've had in my mind for a while now.

Some people might remember me from the days when I used to write for Suite101, AmigaActive and Total Amiga. I was also part of that "shadowy" ACCM/ACAG organisation who really weren't as sinister or exciting as people made out.

Thanks to Mikey and the rest of the ANT crew for bringing me back into the community

Re: Looks like the sam is selling good?

@daveyw

For me, the SAM offers a few advantages over my A1XE - namely power consumption, noise and size. I don't need the better CPU or expandability of the A1, which is I trend I've found for my other computers. I seem to be drifting to smaller, quieter and more energy efficient systems. Apart from the A1, everything I have set up on the desk is pretty much silent now

Big, big thank you to everyone involved with the demo and ANT in general for a great afternoon. I've neglected my Amiga roots these last three years and its shamed me into reviving my interest in my favourite computer of all time. I'll definitely be buying a SAM with OS4.1.
