Re: I have some good news, 98% of OWB compiles in cygwin :-)

@joerg

I must have missed something along the way here... I noticed the creation of this thread but I didn't know what was going on behind the scenes...

What exactly is going on? you handing over the development of OWB or is someone else wanting to start there own branch or is something taking shape that allows more than just yourself to work on OWB sources etc?

I just want to make it clear that I will not support anything that places what we had in the beginning (e.g. Joerg working by himself on OWB and we getting nice wee updates) in the firing line and risking termination!

Everyone play fair, this is a great time for us!

hmmm

this isn't a bad thing I suppose

I'm thinking though because I'm going to get hold of the SPS Floppy drive that allows reading and writing of IPFs that it'll also do ordinary floppy filesystems... so better to wait for that to be released and of course its usb so no need to take up a slot...

It probably won't do High Density though and that's a small pain

Excuse my mumbling!

For what do you need newer m68k binutils? GeekGadgets, incl. the m68k-amigaos-gcc compilers (2.93.3 as well as the last version 3.4.0), does work on AmigaOS 4.x, you just have to replace the AmigaOS 3.x/m68k ixemul.library and ixnet.library, which can't work on AmigaOS 4.x, by the AmigaOS 4.x versions.

Unless you need C++ you should use VBCC instead for building AmigaOS 3.x/m68k software on AmigaOS 4.x, it's very easy to install and the executables are PPC native.

Well that is good to hear but I had already thought anything compiled for m68k had a good chance of running under the emulation on the SAM.

But what I want is GCC and probably Binutils compiled for the SAM Flex and targetting the m68k because of the speed

I'm just a compiler that cuts and pastes etc and includes missing headers and can sometimes do more tricker stuff so I don't really want to use VBCC, I'm used to GCC.

If I can't get a SAM specific compiled version of gcc 2.95.3 for example then the thread really has been a waste of time... I might as well use one of my many 060 m68k machines to just use the normal gcc installation...

A 800Mhz 1gig SAM has got to be faster at generating code than a 50Mhz 060 or a 233Mhz 604e which only has WarpOS versions of CC0 and CC1 if I remember rightly...

I don't have access to other machines nor do I want too

When the X1000 comes out I'm going to want a X1000 version too LOL

Errr

I just made a post like this on EAB

I've owned an Amiga since early 1986 and never owned or used any other cpu system... sorry but its another reason why I thought I'd ask for a native SAM Flex 2.95.3

It's not about the compiling its simply about using an Amiga to resolve an AmigaOS idea.

I choose 2.95.3 because it seems to offer the best compatiability and stability and I choose the SAM to get 800Mhz compiling power instead of 060 compiled... and the older warp version worked ok on my 233Mhz 604e but I don't think it was perfect... I'll try it again if I have too... once I get my classics sorted!

Thanks for your interest guys

@tboeckel

Yes, but then I'd have to setup Linux? But then I suppose there has been plenty of time to compile all the other packages to run in this environment as well... just thought it wouldn't take much since the other packages with bin executables would run under OS4.1 already...

Thanks for your comments I don't own any other machines though

Ummm, does anyone want to sort that out for me please?

Yes, I know, it's a cross compiler for m68k natively running on modern OS4.1.2 hardware...

I think what has happened is because I have spent the last two weeks sorting and cleaning my huge Amiga collection and noticing all the lovely old hardware etc that I miss running some of the software I used too... especially stuff that won't compile on the newer gccs...

I know there is a gcc 2.95.3 for AmigaOS4 but it lacks all the other includes etc, I'd have to try and compile all the packages and there's only one way that will end LOL

Where is Gunther Nikl when you need him? heh but then, hey, don't we have Zer0 guy who has heaps of these cross compilers what's one more I say!

hmmm... I will still need to use some other packages... I wonder if the rest will run under 020 emulation? ie I mean, say you were to transplant the entire geekgadgets installation and only have new versions of the actual compilers and possibly binutils etc... will the rest which are m68k run under emulations...

and I raised the question a few days back regarding the possibility of using this hd solution with A590s with XT connections... I'm thinking... why shouldn't it work?

@amigamaniac_aus

Greetings!

I'm in the process of sorting out my entire Amiga collection... and I want to start fixing them all up with Harddrives and suitable solutions along these lines...

SO...

What do I need to rig out any A600s or A1200s or A4000s from the list below:

*Male CF to 2.5" IDE adapter @ AUD$6
*2.5" IDE to 2.5" SATA adapter @ AUD$10
*3.5" IDE to SATA adapter @ AUD$9
*Male SD to 3.5" IDE adapter @ AUD$14

*8GB CF memory @ AUD$25
*8GB TF/Micro SD memory with SD adapter @ AUD$21

AND are there any options like this with A590s? that have XT ports?

Thanks

@mbrantley

raise the stack in the icon?

also, not sure about lightwave but thinking back, I know Imagine had the option to render straight to file and not display it...

could be a work around for the moment anyway

eg just use your favourite 3rd party picture viewer to show your render... perhaps even the viewer in Diropus, although that won't scroll around a bigger than workbench image... as far as I can tell, in anycase

Hmmmm

I just picked up one of these Microtech towered A500 systems in the weekend (an auction I just won recently)

So tell me (since I haven't open the tower yet) does this turn our standard A500 or A500+ into a fully fledged B2000?

Thanks for any insight

Edit: It's okay now, I opened it, curiousity got the better of me since posting... It looks very nice inside and sports a FPUless 030 (not sure on the mhz) but it seems to have memory and was made by microrobitics 1991...

Got the A590 and A500 memory expansion and all inside...

Anyone know where I can get the manuals for this? The docs supplied are unfortunately in german...

I've got a better idea, lets let the programmers decide what they want to do... Let the ones out of this group who wish to lead themselves and anyone else willing to join in a certain direction do so...

And those amongst us who wish to show our support do so and those that aren't interested overlook the thread etc...

Just leave well enough alone...

And I keep saying there is no other OS... imitation is NOT an alternative it's simply a copy... now lets just put it to rest...

It only makes sense that some form of allowance will be made (I do it myself in a managing position for encouragement and incentive) if not you might think twice about doing the same in the future, it only makes sense. The problem I find and I think is wrong is that many people expect this kind of thing and literally require a guarantee before embarking on anything... practical to some but spirit and good will killing I tell ya...

I can tell you that it's not trivial - when you find what you think is a bug, you have to find a way to reproduce it, describe it exactly so that an overworked dev can reproduce and fix it, then follow it up later with a verification that it has been fixed.

This is obviously the way it has to be. If you're anything like me you just don't give up until you get the answer. I guess it's the journey not so much the result that keeps me going! I can't remember the last time I actually gave up getting to my goal because I couldn't make something work!

@ChrisH

Well, even if your concerns are valid from one point of view I don't find it troubling.

I would find it a personal honour to be part of this project and they wouldn't owe me anything (think about this, THIS is MY Joyride!)... The time during this deliberation would be completely priceless! I think most have forgotten the Spirit of the Amiga!

It's way too exciting to worry about the consequences and who should foot whatever bill or marvel at our decision to help and give us discounts (boggle) LETS JUST GO!!!

Yeah Hah!!!

btw, isn't ?1500 roughly 15 decent weekends out on the grog? Stay home for 15 weeks and own your own X1000!

I remember when I used to go out I'd spend 150 dollars a time easily (it wasn't uncommon for me to spend 300+ over a weekend, every weekend)... I remember one week I spashed out on a pair of earmuff radio headphones and a co-worker said to me they couldn't justify spending $350 on a pair of those and I said, how much do you spend on going out in the weekend, they told me, I said well, stay home two weekends and you've got your earmuffs, they replied, oh no, I couldn't do that, I NEED my weekend... so you see its all about what people want to provide for and what they don't want to give up... really very stupid...

Then you have other people that are SO tight etc with everything but quite happily shell out $200 a week for a bag of weed... again, very stupid...

That is why I have little time for people who moan about the price of todays cpus... the bloody things are too cheap if you ask me, every cat and there dog has one now and most people still can't use them! I say keep the riff raff out of the X1000! lol amen...
