My Amiga shells never take up the full width of the screen.

I think you meant "choose" rather than "choice".

Yes we do live in a very shallow world these days with no substance don't we, sad but maybe true.

Just because something looks good does not mean it is and 99% of the time is actually the opposite.

To me marketing and brands is just bull-shit and most things that need marketing and "design" or eye candy tend to be total rubbish that appeal to the feeble minded.

A useable and quick website whether using IB or OWB or Firfox, is far better than some bloated site relying on too much CSS, flash, javascript etc. All these things take time to download.

So you prefer useless eye candy to accuracy and speed. Each to their own.

As a practical astronomer I far prefer DU to anything on other platforms which usually crash or are so slow as to be unuseable.

Celestia for example crawls along on my A1 which is no slouch with a 1.26Mhz CPU, it also has zero documentation. It was nice to try out but for me it is just eye candy but no real astronomy and far too slow to use

As an observing tool DU is much more useful

It is quick, accurate and shows stars and other objects without any silly overlays of mythical figures which is totally unnecessary.

What is this modern obsession with useless bloat ? If you want that use Windows

I would much rather the sites remain functional in ALL web browsers than add gimmicks that force people into using paricular browsers.

Functionality is 100% more important than eye candy.

@djrikki

1. Digital Universe

The ONLY OS 4.1 app worth having IMHO, but as the co-author I may be *slightly* biased

2. 3D Stars - also mine.

Both are also ones of the few not a port from another platform but true Amiga developed apps!

Others I use in no particular order,

IBrowse, YAM, DOpus4, GoldEd, MoneyMatters, Wordworth, HP11C, AmiFTP, Organiser, DVPlayer, ImageFX.

For relaxation (or maybe frustration) Soliton, PipePanic, MahjonghhTiles.

And in future Timberwolf, very promising so far for an alpha.

@MichaelMerkel

I assume because it is only alpha that it only runs on workbench at the moment. I do wish it could run on another screen too, I am so used to running things on their own screens now.

I would guess that the final version would be able to run on its own screen and have proper menus etc.

Early days yet, I am very impressed with it so far. Despite being alpha it is very useable.

I just saw this on the BBC news channel (Freesat 200) and the guy they interviewed was a dead ringer for Fleecy and did indeed have the name Barrie Moss.

I have been suggesting AmiDock has this for ages now. Cool.

I must download tomorrow.

Do you need to use the docky or has Amidock finally been fixed itself ?

@MickJT

You wont because the alias is set once when opening a shell. Typing newcli from within that shell will start a new shell but again, the alias will be set up just the once for that new shell. It does not iterate.

Then he should be a lot more careful about making criticisms about posts needing more work. And you need to be a lot more careful about getting personal.

I do wonder why someone who is supposedly "Supreme Council" and therefore must be a moderator(?) of an Amiga oriented site is being so negative and disparaging about attempts to improve the future of the Amiga.

Just my 2p

I have that too and had it for years. I think there were some circumstances where the shell still reverted to a default setting which was why I also added the newcli alias into my shell-startup file.

The other one is Final Writer, have never used it. I believe it is in the same situation as Wordworth though, no longer available.

I use it quite a lot and much prefer it to having to fight with M$ Word at work.

The PDF user guide for 3DStars was all done using Wordworth.

Unfortunately WW is not available anymore, though no doubt second hand copies may crop up on ebay from time to time.

@Ant

Well it has worked on my A1 with OS4.0, OS4.1 and all the updates, the answer is YES.

As a few others have mentioned ever since the Amiga had retargetable graphics you will need to set the tooltype PICASSO=TRUE

@mbrantley

I have the line:

"alias newcli newcli WINDOW=CON:80/50/750/250/Amiga_Shell from s:shell-startup"

in shell-startup.

Then if I type newcli it always opens up a window of my preferred size.

@ChrisH

I just tried this with YAM, the only app I know that uses Ringhio.

You are correct, if the programme is closed while the notification is still up then the screen does not close, normally a MUI screen closes when a third party window is closed. I know that as I tend to use KingCon shells on other screens often and after sending the CLI back to WB or closing it, screens close as they should. So it looks as if Ringhio is not telling the screen/system that it has finished with its window.

As I am unlilkey to want to close YAM before the notification telling me I have mail to read disappears I am not /that/ worried

Use lha x -a "filename" "destination" and that will do the trick.

The -a will preserve the file attributes which apparently you need to do.

I will second that, registration for every bloody site you want to use maybe once in your entire lifetime is a real pain.

Another rquiremnt is that any such site *mus* work with IBrowse and AWeb, I am not willing to use sites like Sourceforge which are dismal in IB. Nor would I be willing to fire up OWB or heaven forbid my Mac just to be able to report problems with Amiga OS. If a site doesn't work in IB then I will not use it - full stop.

However, the simplest way is to just email someone about the problem. Eventually after months of being ignored someone does get back and is able to repeat the same problems

@tonyw

I wonder what happened to the reply I sent two nights ago, it seems to have disappeared ? Maybe I did not press the Submit button.

The file I have from my pre update partition is ATIRadeon.chip 53.6 (04/08/2008)

This makes me wonder what happened to v 53.7 to 53.18 ! Were they only available to OS4 beta testers maybe.

Those later versions may too give the same problems ?

You will not see so much any flickering or even disappearing, but you will see lines drawn at the wrong angles, truncating at the left and generally being wrong. This does not happen with the 53.6 version of the ATI file.

I will send some examples to you today.
