Huh?! Where did you get this from? What is going to happen in March 2008?

Weeeelllll, the AmigaOne has Altivec, and IS a 933MHz part, actually, and also, doesn't ACube offer a drop in replacement for it that does 1.2 GHz?

My microA1 does not have altivec, it has an 800MHz G3, so a Sam440 would not be a downgrade for me. For AmigaOne-XE owners it would be, sure.

@BillE

It's a slight downgrade when you consider raw CPU power (e.g. 667MHz vs. 800MHZ), but compared to the uA1 at least, the GPU is much more powerful than the Radeon 7000 chip of the uA1, the Sam has SATA, and USB2.0, and a much faster DDR memory/controller, comes with twice as much RAM, etc. So it is definitely an upgrade to the uA1, in every aspect except raw CPU performance, where it is probably a 20% downgrade, which I don't think will be noticable due to the much faster RAM. I think that overall the Sam440 is worth more than the uA1 and costs less at the same time, so it is definitely an improvement.

Having said that I would too like to see considerably more powerful hadware, in fact I would like to see a range of hardware available for OS4, with the Sam440 covering the low-end, and other boards for the mid and high-end.

The reason we have 667MHz in the Sam440 is because there weren't any more poweful SoC (Silicon on Chip) devices available at the time when the Sam was designed, and also the 440EP has a reasonable price tag attached to it. Using SoC devices means faster and easier development process, which meams it costs less to develop a board based on it, and it is finished faster, than using conventional CPUs with external northbridge/southbridge, and also the final product costs less to manufacture and has fewer components.

However now there are much more powerful SoC solutions available, AMCC offers the 460EX, which runs at up to twice the speed of the 440EP (1.2GHz) and also features an L2 cache, which the 440EP lacks, has built-in PCI-Express controller, etc. Freescale also now offers the MPC8641D, which is a G4-based dual-core SoC running at up to 1.5GHz, also supporting PCI-Express on-chip. Also, recently the PA Semi 1682M has become available, which is a G5-based dual-core SoC, also featuring PCI-Express and running at up to 2GHz. So there are a lot of SoC solutions available now, but these have only been available since very recently, and we are not likely to see any completed boards based on these chips this year.

By the way, whatever happened to that Fantasy Amiga case project? Such a case would be ideal for the Sam440.

@AmigaManiac

Actually as it turns out there's an accelerated A1200 in the house somewhere (030/50 IIRC), but they don't have a monitor for it. A VGA adaptor might do the trick, although he wants it mostly for games, so then he'd have to hook it up to a TV. But he'll have to get the games across from a PC so he'll need to boot into the system which IIRC was set to Multiscan:Productivity mode. But perhaps an A500 would be better for playing classic games, but he'll need the A1200 to write the disk images to floppyies that he gets off the net. Unfortunately there's nobody there who knows about Amigas to help him out.

@AmiDog

I'd be happy with just the simple little GUI that the other ports have.

By the way I tried modifying one of the keymaps and seems to work. However I was unable to change which keymap file it should use (symbolic or positional), setting 'KeymapIndex' to 1 does not seem to many a difference.

@keisangi

Trust me, we would all love to see OS4 with twice the features it currently has, and we'd love to have that yesterday, but it's simply not realistic to expect a couple of full-time developers and a dozen or two part-time developers to achieve this so quicky. If this team had the chance to continue development of AmigaOS shortly after Commodore went under, we'd be in a much better position. But there were many years when there was no development of AmigaOS whatsoever, while all the other operating systems kept on advancing. So there's a lot to catch up on, but I think AmigaOS has already come VERY far, and that with the right applications, and steadily available, affordable hardware, it would be attractive enough for many computer enthusiasts in its current state.

Personally I don't have any stability problems, the only software that crashes for me occasionally is IBrowse.

ok.. so you can crash every system.. maybe .. okay why not ..
then what about getting an OS that could be crashed as much as linux, or macosX ?
edit: typo

It just so happens that Hyperion does not have hundreds of full-time developers working on the OS, like Apple or Microsoft does. They have done a miracle so far with the limited resources available and while there are many things that could be improved (and many things that will be improved), I'm very happy with the OS in its current state, what's more important now is to get more applications, like a decent web browser (e.g. Firefox) and a few others withot which the OS is not all that useful. Also, we need to have OS4 released on the Sam440 and other hardware so that people can get access to it. Big changes like full memory protection, paging, new graphic system, unicode support, etc. probably won't happen any time soon, my guess is that we'll have some of those maybe 1 year from now, some others maybe 2-3 years from now. The OS development was not progressing for many years so it's hard to catch up with the rest, especially when you have much less money and developers than the competitors.

@AmiDog

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Maybe I only changed the comment, I was really tired when I tried it...

It should use whatever is default and you should be able to override it by specifying the 'KeymapIndex' resources in the resourse file.

Any chance of adding a GUI for the keyboard settings?

VICE keyboard settings
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

I have a problem using certain keys under VICE's C64 emulation, for instance I could not figure out how to press the CLR HOME key. Under WinVICE I can use the 'Home' key on the PC keyboard. The keyboard settings under the menu does not bring up any window (I suppose it was not implemented in the Amiga port...) and it seems that the emulator does not use either the positional or symbolic keymap files which are under the C64 directory, I tried to modify those files (e.g. make it type a '2' when the '1' key is pressed just for a test) but it does not make any difference to the emulator.

I tried to add the 'KeymapIndex', 'KeymapSymFile' and 'KeymapPosFile' resources to a file under the C64 directory which contained a few other settings already (don't remember the filename at the moment) but it seems to have made no difference whatsoever.

Does anyone know how to change the keyboard settings of VICE? Also, is it planned to add a keyboard settings GUI to the Amiga port of VICE?

Re: Mplayer and DVPlayer

@nubechecorre

It's currently not planned, because making it would be very time consuming, and support for the most popular video formats (wmv, mov, flv) is more important. Support for DVD subtitles is planned though.

DvPlayer is still being developed, but I don't have a lot of spare time lately. As soon as that problem is solved I intend to finish things off and make another release.
