Re: SSolie quote - "Warp3D is going away"

@mbrantley

Well said Mike.... same for Lyle.... all good words.

My 2 cents....
What it seems to me is the small Amiga platform that we enjoy as a hobby, the few that actually own the product in our discussions.... the Hyperion's and A-Eons, etc.... seem to keep any left "feel good" about days gone by where holding onto secrets until revealed at big trade shows like CES, and even the great smaller shows (big though for the time) Amiga shows.

Seems like an Apple move where they have something they want no one else to know about and trade secrets are kept in Steve Jobs locked box until the last minute.

As cool as Amiga is, and I have come to see, those days are gone. I am sure Hyperion (or they should) see no real money is left in AMiga OS (at least that I see). Nothing like Apple or Samsung with phones, etc...

It is a Hobby OS for Hobby Boxes. A-Eon is doing a kick ass job making new gear but I doubt Trevor and Matthew are doing it to make real huge bucks. If they can pay the bills and get by I think is all they see.

Why Hyperion at this point wants to keep super secret on anything is beyond me. It is the users and developers it seems to me keeping the boat moving and the small Amiga market alive.

If you tell the world about something.... Warp 3D we are working on, or whatever, it just seems to make most sense to offer progress reports, even if it means very limited (we are working on it still but no new news when it will come). Keeping everyone in the dark in such a small market seems to upset more than I think what the owner will gain back.

My moto with customer service is.... if you call me at 4:59, 1 minute before closing for the day, I will still call customer back even if it is to say "thank you for calling. Your issue will take a little longer to get figured out and we are now closing for the day. We will call you back 1st thing in the morning and see what we can do".

Common sense. Common caring. No secrets. That is just silly stuff from an era gone by.

My 2 cents is not singling out any of the folks offering their free time, developers, etc.... it is targeted at those like Hyperion, A-Eon, A-Cube, etc.... You make nice stuff... thank you so much for doing so.... But, this is 2014 and not 1985.... no one is after your trade secrets. You are working on getting tha 2nd core working in a $3K computer or getting 3D to work.... awesome..... keep at it... but no need to be so secret about it. Just let folks know if she is still being worked on, and progress reports you want to share, and if non, fine.... but let folks know if cancelled or on backburner, etc...

EDIT.... resolved. My faaa_library was not installed properly.

Appears newer AmigaAMP relies on it and I did not see that.

Made sure my library was in place and now .m4a plays fine.

tj

Anyone else not able to play .m4a anymore on AmigaAMP 3.7?

All played fine before and I just updated to this 3.7 and now my MP3 play fine but all the .M4a do not play. The bar that shows progress of the song moves rather quickly from left to right and nothing happens song wise. No sound nothing.

So tell me more about the dual display setup.

I take it workbench runs on one display and the other your apps of choice?

Do both displays also have slide down screens?

That would be neat!

TJ, I have so many fans blowing in my home computer lab (including the one aimed at me most of the time), as well as the TV or the music playing, the girls yacking (er, conversing with me I mean) and the dogs making various noises that... well, I don't know. I suspect they are the same. Plus, I still have the 4850 installed and driving a second display, so I added to the noise no doubt about it.

Sorry I'm no help on this one. About the only quiet time I get is when I am in my old-fashioned photo darkroom, and that's not too often these days.

Anyway, I figure the custom Nemo board and the exotic CPU were expensive but the video card wasn't, so it's no big deal to me. And until the AmiWest announcement I had no notion that Warp3D was coming at all.

Would you say the 6850 is quieter than the 4850?

I am looking forward to quieting down my X1000 a tad.

I am a little bummed that it appears Warp will not work for the 4650 that came with my X1000, mostly because I spent tons of $ on it and it appears 2013 I will just not have extra cash to be buying anything else, but at the same time, no big deal really and I will roll with the punches.

I will wait to see how it all pans out and then find the best fanless video card that the new Warp 3D support and get it later when I can have some cash again.

I do appreciate all that Trevor and team have done bringing X1000 to market.

No worries or sense of betrayal from me that Warp3D is not announced for the 4000 series cards like the 4850 that I bought with my X1000. It was never promised and anyway I already upgraded to a RadeonHD 6850 as soon as I learned the newer, better cards were going to be supported by the 2D driver.

Also, frankly, I already figured Gallium and OS4.2 were a ways off. After all, nothing has come fast before has it? But getting Warp3D (which was never expected) in the short term is good news for me, and if I didn't already have the 6850 card I wouldn't waste a second fretting about it. I'd just buy a 5xxx or 6xxx card. I mean, the cheaper ones are not very costly at all.

And on top of all this, all indications are that the A-EON partners are being both cautious AND optimistic that there'll be new OS4.X hardware to come. That's good to hear.

The A-EON partners are investing (read that as risking) real money on development. They have to be careful and make well-considered decisions of how to spend limited resources.

A big YES!!

I own a X1000 FC with stock 4650 card and would sure hope the newer drivers will be available for it.

I can understand if there is some major reason why it can't but I would guess most X1000 FC owners have this 4650 that AmigaKit installed so would hope we are supported.

X1000 all the way. Pretty fast machine, expandable, looks bad-ass, and I think one day having the dual cpu will be a rather cool thing if 4.2 supports it, etc...

Mine is a bit loud comared to what I am used to, Macs that are whisper quiet, but maybe one day a different video card will help with that.

I am just waiting to learn what the best video card will end up being in terms of 3D, quiet, and most supported, for someone like me that does not really know Amiga super dooper well.

Are the Thursday and Friday seminars only for those that know how to program?

I am not a programmer but it sounds like fun.

Last time I programmed was AppleScript apps on Mac in the early 2000s and then before that, Basic on Atari 8bit and 16bit systems.

Or would I be lost and dazed if I attended?

How does one join the seminars and sign up?

Here is another work-around for those who can't get bookmarks working.
Make your bookmark file your TW homepage like this:
1. Copy your OWB bookmarks.html file to the Timberwolf/CurrentUserProfile directory.
2. Select the TOOLS/OPTIONS menu in TimberWolf.
3. In the Startup block of the General tab enter "file:///CurrentUser:bookmarks.html" as your Home Page. Close the Preferences window.
4. When you restart TImberwolf the bookmark page will be displayed so you can click on a link.
5. When you open a new tab, click the home gadget to open the bookmark page.

Nice!

Now I will keep trying to use Timberwolf and see how things go.

Wish I could have done a better job but I think it is good enough for what it is. One of these days I will get my lighting issues resolved. But yes, 15k views is sweet. Shows quite a few folks at least have some interest in Amiga.

I had fun watching the Amiga Tutor tour to show me about Amiga. Felt like I was a kid and learning computers for the first time again.

@mz3540

Well, 2 to 3 years from my point of view being into the Amiga is like a senior already. I just started January 2010. hehehehe.

So, I hear about this new Amiga X1000 from OSnews web site one night. I play around and start reading about Amiga. Decide there that the X1000 when it comes out will be my flagship computer and my Macs will take second seat. I decide also to go back to my days of youth when computing was actually really fun.

In other words, in a short few weeks I went from never owning an Amiga (I was an Atarian in 70s/80s/early 90s and then Mac in 90s to now) to now owning a very clean A1000 (the first Amiga made and now the 1st Amiga I purchased), a CD32, and have a A4000T on order. hehehehe

Plan is when the X1000 sees the light of day, it will become my main Office system to get all my business done. I still need my Macs of course as I have my own company (self employed) called MacSociety and I provide tech services on Mac so I need Mac to earn my bread. Unless I can get into the Amiga business down the road when Amiga is in every home again.

So, my A1000 sits next to my Mac system and is wonderful little system. I am sure I will use it to keep it alive. Oh yeh... I have an Amiga 500 on the way to.

Can anyone say I am a sick sick man.

tj

Here is my A1000.
