Re: Printers

@bean
great, thanks for that. I had not even seen it on OS4 depot before. It has sorted out the Xipaint printing problem so I can print all my PPaint pics from that.
although PPaint itself still will not print and I have not tried PSmode with it. My main concern was to reprint my business cards ( It might have been easier to design new ones on Art Effect, but we get attached to our favourites don't we?)

I don't know if this is significant but since the last OS4 update with the work done to the usb side of things I can use the printer half of the HP C3180 all in one photosmart express with just the bog standard HP_Deskjet_970c driver in Devs and the Usbprinter.device. I couldnt get the usb printer working at all before.
only glitches so far are with PPaint and XiPaint, trials are ongoing. Well done Hyperion.

@Jack
Fraid I don't know Jack. I just tried different settings until I had the right speed starting from 2x. I don't think the old speed table can apply with the new cpu but it still works somehow. 1266/4.5 =281 mhz......I don't know where that is coming from.

@TMTisFree

the dip switch settings are available on IntuitionBase.com. I started off with x2 and the A1 kicked into life. Once I had installed OS4 final I then started playing around with other setttings until I settled with x4.5 (on off off off). Having had one cpu blow I am not so willing to try overclocking, this setting gives me 1.266Ghz.
I don't know the reason why the A1 kicked into life at the lower speed, maybe others could enlighten us, all I know is that it worked for me.
Good luck

Re: CPU Module

@dwolfman

My old 7455 ran at 933mhz all the time. As soon as I got the A1 I changed the core voltage to make it run more stable and added a heavy fan with a support bracket to keep it cool. It ran at about 45c to 50c given the vagaries of the temperature display on the tower. I think a weak point in the module design is siting mounting holes so close to the capacitors. As for the cpu itself I agree the design and manufacture are not in question but more the choice of cpu in particular with regard to cooling properties at normal running speeds should not have been the 7455.( in hindsight of course.)( and with the benefit of practical results with the 7457 running at a cool 35c and therefore not requiring such a humongous cooling system.)

I was without my A1 from 8th August2005 to 25th March 2007. The only reason I know that is from my D-Net history.

@TMTisFree

Try dropping the speed of the cpu. I had to set mine quite low to start with (about 266mhz before my A1 kicked in) Have you made sure that the voltage dipswitches on the motherboard are set to all off? I.E. the lowest setting possible 1.34Volts.

@Rob

Good luck with your re-installation, don't panic if the cpu doesn't fire up first time, you may need to power down the dip switches first.

Re: CPU Module

@acefnq

well since the module is bolted to the motherboard it means the computer has to be stripped, I would also advise care when undoing the bolts in case the tool you use to slacken the nuts dislodges the capacitors either side of the bolt holes. That happened to me and I did not realise the solder had cracked until one of the capacitors lifted up on its end. If you are not certain you can tackle the job it is probably best you get an expert to do it for you, but the job itself is not technically difficult.

@Swisso

I sent my module to Max without sink/fan. Since the module was Kaput there seemed no sense in adding to the postage.
He tested the reworked module on his computer I believe so he would have used his own sink/fan.
I am happy to answer any questions you have, I would just like to add that the module came back to me in pristine condition, I would never have known it had been reworked. The job Max has done is fantastic and has brought my A1 back to life when I was beginning to think it would never run again.

He He, thanks but its amazing what PCWorld chuck out as useless these days.
One of the benefits of having a system that ( how can I put it delicately) lags the leading edge by a couple of years I suppose.

@PR1

It is 1.3Ghz, it is not over clocked and I don't recommend you over clock yours. My old module was running at 933mhz for over a year and then died, I don't think they are very robust cpus compared to most others.
