Re: Which udma mode are you using?

@Antique

I have the harddrive set to 100 MB/s, which is the max. that it can handle according to idetool. I haven't had a single problem since I configured it.

@TMTisFree

Thanks for the offer. I will likely take you up on it but first I need to get the .device compiled.

I'm using application.library's "prefsobjects" interface for the device preferences which should mean that until the proper RAID prefs program has been written it should be possible to use the PrefsObjectEditor to create the prefs file.

Also some knowledge about writing mountlists (i.e. DOSDrivers) will be needed.

As an update i did write code for striped reads and writes yesterday.

@SZAMAN

Well since I was bored and had nothing better to do I started writing "swraid.device" on the weekend and I have now gotten it to the point where it (hopefully) should compile and work (to some extent at least) once I get my A1 working again.

At this point I have only implemented mirroring. I think I will leave striping until I can at least test that the current code works correctly.

I'm using the diskimage.device source code as basis for this project which is why it's going so fast.

Also at some point I will have to write a prefs program of some kind (using ReAction of course).

Antec Minuet. It was sold bundled with the ?A1 (not installed though).

Another update. I got an answer from Antec and it seems the warranty was still in force the month that I made the support ticket with them, so now I just need to get the PSU posted to them and they should send me a replacement.

@SZAMAN

I don't know the answer to your question, but writing a software RAID driver (swraid.device) that does striping/mirroring shouldn't be too hard.

If my A1 was working and I had more than one harddrive in it I'd be willing to give it a try.

Edit: Come to think of it, I could use my diskimage.device for this purpose (testing).

Re: Memory protection and tasks/processes

@Hans

On AmigaOS the only difference between a "task" and a "process" (from Exec's point of view they are all tasks) is that the "struct Process" contains some additional fields over the "struct Task". Most notably the pr_MsgPort which is used by dos.library for communicating with filesystems.

The only real difference between a task and a process is that a task can't make use of DOS while a process can.

It seems that putting the workbench to 16bit mode the game runs fine without problem.. maybe the 32bit mode gives problem to the 3d of radeon 7000 ?..

I don't think so, unless you have a different kind of Radeon 7000 than I have. I have my Workbench set to 32-bit and have never had any problems with glquake.

I found two version on os4depot, one is only in software render and with that version i have problem with the graphic because it is not clear but the screen is like it has several vertical lines that cut the image of the game..

That's a known problem. It started when P96 switched over to using bigendian screenmodes (the PPC is a bigendian CPU) when available (update #4 I think).

It also happens with Genetic Species.

IIRC in both cases it can be "fixed" by changing the Workbench screenmode to 256 colours.

My brother and I are going to look into buying a small UPS for the ?A1 so that once we get the power supply replaced something like this hopefully won't happen again, ever.

Power breaks like this are far too frequent here, so I wouldn't want to have it running without an UPS now that I've seen what can happen. Especially as the A1 itself can't be replaced if it is destroyed.

I am posting this from the ?A1. I have temporarily connected the PSU from the PC to the ?A1 to check if the ?A1 motherboard is really still working (my brother's idea) and apparently it is. I have also contacted Antec's support (the company that made the case/PSU) about ordering a replacement PSU from them but have not got an answer from them yet, except that they wanted to know what serial number the PSU was.

@Atheist

I have the same problem here. Not so long ago I had to move the time 20 minutes forwards because it was lagging behind. I've been thinking of looking into syncing the time with the net to fix this (once on startup would be enough IMO).

Of course before I can do anything about it I would have to get my A1 working again...

In SFS 1.274 there are really two types of SFS: SFS/0 and SFS/2. Purpose of this is just to seperate things for large files (for those below 4 GB the system uses SFS/0, for thos above - SFS/2).

You can compare this to how FastFileSystem uses disk ids like DOS\x where x is a different number depending on whether the disk is formatted as OFS or FFS and if it uses international mode, directory caching, long filenames support, etc..

SFS\0 - 2 GB?

IIRC this is exactly 4GB - 2 bytes, i.e. 2^32 - 2 bytes (largest size possible).

The limit for FFS might be around 2GB though if it uses signed 32-bit integers.

Thanks for the replies.

Nothing happens when I press the power button. Not even the PSU starts up so I guess it's the PSU that is dead then.

Hopefully that means that the motherboard's still OK.

When I get the chance I'll ask my brother to help with getting a new case/PSU. He's a lot more experienced at this stuff than I am. Maybe also buy a spare battery at the same time just in case.

I just came home from work and turned on my PC and my ?A1. Apparently there was a short power break just as the ?A1 was loading up U-boot. The PC is connected to a UPS so it wasn't affected, the A1 lost power however and went out.

Now when I try to turn the A1 back on again there is no reaction at all? No sound, no nothing, it's like it's not getting any power.

Before there was always a yellow light at the ethernet port when the computer was plugged in but now there is nothing. Does this mean that the PSU has stopped working?

@jabirulo

I suggest if you can you upload the Makefile somewhere and then link to it from here as that way there is no risk that the forum code breaks it by removing whitespace/changing tabs into spaces or whatever.

If that's not a possibility you could try [ code ] [ /code ] tags or maybe use the "code paste" function on utilitybase.com...
