@amigakit
Hopefully there are no plans to make any more sound datatypes streaming because we need at least one non-streaming datatype for small notification sounds like sending or receiving emails, instant messaging notification or any other programs that notify the user with short sounds.

Re: screenmode prefs highest resolutions absent

Just can't stay away

@JosDuchIt
There are 2 ways to get your available screen modes back:

1.The manual screen modes available are contained in the icon of the monitor file in the SYS:Devs/Monitors directory. Backup the current file (or files) in that directory. Then click on your monitor file and select the 'Workbench/Icons/Information...' menu on Workbench. You will see the modes made available by the monitor file. Add the mode that you want, close the icon and reboot. After you reboot, the screenmode you added should be seen in Screenmode prefs. I'm assuming that the screenmodes you said you copied are valid for your current monitor.

2. If you are not sure about the screenmodes you copied or the above procedure doesn't work, open ScreenMode prefs and select the Monitor Tab. Click the "Detect settings automatically" box to activate it (it will be checkmarked then), select the 'Available Modes' tab and then select 'Save' at the bottom of the window. When you reboot, you should see all the modes that your Grahics card can handle in ScreenMode prefs.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'doing a raw copy'. Do you mean copy the the X5000 CD .iso file to the USB stick or the files from the .iso image to the USB stick?

@all
Do to hasty testing my report that the Enhancer wav.datatype was returning an SDTA_Sample attribute was wrong. The latest sound.datatype did fix the SDTA_Sample attribute return by the (non-streaming) 8svx.datatype and aiff.datatype. Sorry for the misleading info.

Re: Enhancer Bug thread

@glames
I've investigated what really happened with my testing. I have several boot partitions and I accidently tested the new sound.datatype on a partition that still had the OS4FE wav.datatype installed. Apparently, the latest wav.datatype I was sent for testing is still a streaming datatype. However, the latest test sound.datatype does work for non-streaming datatypes like 8SVX and AIFF. If the new wav.datatype can not be made to return the data address attribute, you can convert your sounds to 8SVX or AIFF and they should work.

Don't feel bad. It stopped working for me too! As you can see in my first post, it worked the first day I received it. I can't really explain why it stopped working today. I didn't change anything on my system.

@ChrisH
My X5000 has a UBOOT menu (accessed by interrupting UBOOT) that has an option to boot from USB. However, I don't see any boot device variables for specifying the boot order when I print the variables with NVGetvar or check the variable in Ranger. It seems that getting UBOOT advice can be tricky considering the differences between the various OS4 hardware.

Do you have the same?

Thank you for your help

Yes, my WAVE descriptor is the same.The only other thing I can suggest is that you play a WAVE sound with Multiview (or Multiviewer) and then enter "version sound.datatype" and "version wav.datatype" in a shell to check what versions are in memory. Beyond that, I can't really help you any more.

@broadblues
O.K. Because I had originally purchased Multiviewer seperately, I ended up with Multiviewer installed in 2 different places, conflicting assignments and possibly other issues. Now that I've got that problem worked out, the Help key is working in MultiEdit and the HTML docs open in Multiviewer.

Unfortunately my seperate version of Multiviewer is showing up in AmiStore as up-to-date when in fact it is at least one version behind the Multiviewer in Enhancer 1.3. I think AmigaKit needs to update the seperate version at AmiStore.

My post wasn't really a complaint but an expression of my personal preferences in text editors.

Does TTX use the texteditor.gadget?

No. TTX (TurboText) is an OS3 (68k) text editor. It just has some features that I prefer for programming. I't probably not fair for me to compare a programmer's editor to a general purpose text editor.

No. The freeze was a fluke. Apparently, something else had destabalized my system. After turning off the X5000 and restarting, the problem is just an error that pops up in a console. Because I've removed some Enhancer files and programs that I don't use, I'm going to install Enhancer on a spare boot partition and test again to be sure the problem isn't due to something I've changed or removed from my main boot partition.

Re: Enhancer Bug thread

@Raziel
I can confirm your little bug by explicitly following the directions you gave in your first post about the problem. In general the cursor in MultiEdit is unusual in that it disappears if you click outside the editing area. I think the cursor in NotePad remains as long as the window is active. The cursor in TTX is just ghosted when the window is inactive so you still know where the cursor is; which is what I prefer.

Does the "Help" key (Scroll Lock on the keyboard) work with MultiEdit for you? Here Multiviewer opens with an empty window and the system freezes. I'm using a new X5000 so I don't know yet if it's a problem with the program or the OS.

Unfortunately, it's still the same: SDTA_Sample returns NULL (others attributes are OK). No sound played.

I use an AmigaOne XE G4. Same result on a X1000

I'm using an X5000. I used the PlayAHI test program (that you gave a link to) with some added Printf() statements in the LoadSample() function.
The original test results I included were flawed and the wav.datatype still doesn't appear to return the SDTA_Sample attribute.
(test results removed)

Do you have the same wav.datatype and sound.datatype as me ?

I have the same versions as you. Just to be sure here are the file sizes:
wav.datatype = 70352 bytes
sound.datatype = 141388 bytes

For testing the first fix at the end of July I received the mod.datatype, mpega.datatype, wav.datatype and sound.datatype.
For test the latest fix I just received the sound.datatype.

As I mentioned, my wav.datatype and sound.datatype are the same version as yours. The only thing I can suggest is to check that you have the right WAVE descriptor in Devs:DataTypes and booting from the partition you updated. Of course the newer datatypes might not get used until rebooting after installing them.

I've just tested an updated version of sound.datatype. GetDTAttrs() is returning the correct attribute value for SDTA_Sample when used with AIFF and 8SVX sound files. Wave files still don't work with PlayAHI.

Gulp. Guess I have to apologize for my negative remarks. Sorry.

The updated sound.datatype now works with glames test program. The correct SDTA_Sample attribute is now being returned by GetDTAttrs() for WAVE and 8SVX datatypes.

I believe (but am happy to be corrected) those are only supposed to return NULL if the DataType doesn't support extracting the data (ie. only streams like the MPEGA DT) or - based on the wording you've given, but not something I'm familiar with - if the DataType is currently streaming, ie. SDTM_PLAY has been called.

In all other cases the sample data should be returned.

Since I'm getting suspicous of the excuses we're being given (like AmigaKit's statement: "The A-Eon datatypes stream by default."), I decided to observe the WAVE datatype streaming. I converted an 8 minute AIFF song to WAVE, opened Snoopy and played the WAVE file with a datatype player. I expected to see a lot of 'Read' commands in Snoopy as the song played but what I saw was the entire 83+ MB file read into memory before sound play started. That doesn't seem like streaming to me.

When I complained that the new sound.datatype was playing mono sounds through a single channel instead of both stereo channels like the OS4 dound.datatype I was told it was not possible with the new sound.datatype. I have my doubts about that too.

It is really bad. My customers and even resellers that bundle my games complains about it... And it's normal.

In order to avoid future problems like this, I can only suggest that you convert your sound files to AIFF and get libaiff from OS4depot so you can load the files and get the attributes for AHI without relying on datatypes.

As per the documentation, Getting the SDTA_[Left|Right]Sample attributes when streaming sound results in a null response (that's from V44 autodocs). The A-Eon datatypes stream by default.

That doesn't explain why SDTA_Sample is returning a NULL attribute for 8SVX and AIFF soundfiles since those would be loaded by the OS4.1FE 8SVX and AIFF datatypes. I was going to suggest to glames that he switch to 8SVX or AIFF sound files but that won't help either at this point.

I had the same results as samo79. Even though the improved Enhancer sound datatypes I tested have fixed the issues with sound attributes for SDTA_SampleLength, SDTA_SamplesPerSecond & SDTA_BitsPerSample; the SDTA_Sample attribute is still broken. Your sound program won't even work with the improved datatypes because getting the SDTA_Sample attribute is returning 0 instead of the sample address. With the current public release, your program probably isn't getting any valid sound attributes.

Here is a quick review of problems I found with Enhancer sound datatypes:
1. Not sending soundplay termination signal - Fixed
2. Not returning correct attribute SDTA_SampleLength - Fixed
3. Not returning correct attribute SDTA_SamplesPerSecond -Fixed
4. Not returning correct attribute SDTA_BitsPerSample -Fixed
5. Not returning correct attribute SDTA_Sample - Still broken
6. Plays mono sample in left channel instead of both channels
like OS4.1u1 sound.datatype - Still broken

How can we expect 3rd party programmers to write working software when system components are being replaced with broken ones. If a commercial product is going to replace system components the replacements should work at least as well as the original components. That's just my opinion.

@glames
I reported problems with sound datatypes not returning correct attributes with GetDTAttrs(). Read pages 6 & 7 of this topic for details. The sounds will be played by datatypes, you just can't get the correct attributes. The datatypes have been fixed and I assume the fixes will show up in the next Enhancer release.

You could just play your sounds with datatypes instead of getting attributes with datatypes and then playing then with AHI.
