Re: SMBMounter 0.2 Released
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

Share browsing is something I'd like to add, but it's a fairly big job... The thing is, I think it's a difference in protocols between Vista/7 and XP/everything else that stops SMBFS from working, so no matter what parameters are used it'll never play ball. Someone else might be able to confirm that for me - I don't have any Vista or 7 machines myself.

Thanks for the comments guys :)

SMBMounter 0.2 Released
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

Okay, well over a year since the last release, but I finally got my act together and implemented some bug fixes and new features that people had been looking for. SMBMounter is a commodity GUI frontend for SMBFS, and can be used for mounting, unmounting and editing network drives quickly and easily.

I've submitted it to Aminet and OS4Depot, but you can also get it on my website:

http://www.robthenerd.com/show.php?se ... =smbmounter&page=download

All feedback is appreciated! Especially people who use it on alternative systems, UAE, MorphOS etc... as I haven't tested these myself.

Hmmm... It might just be the way it works - the logic behind it being whatever entry is highlighted is entered into the file field below. So, when you rename an entry and it stays highlighted after the rename, it's consistent. I can see the situations where this is a bit of a nuisance though...

Thanks guys :) Yeah, that also looks very good Gerograph, nice project! I thought about fitting mine with USB, but in the end decided that a PCMCIA adaptor and CF card is enough for me.

Ah yes, I remember now :) Well, the file names thing I've fixed (though haven't released an update because I'm still tweaking it for my own setup), and the playlist listview is indeed limited by GadTools. There is a setting in the options window for choosing your own font separate from the system - though it doesn't support the font requester so you need to enter the font name manually.

I'll let you know when I release the updated version (0.7), but I guess you really need the MUI version. I'll see about getting an alpha version together for you soon, if you'd like to test it?

Oh? What sort of problems were you having? The listviews are from GadTools, optimised for 3.0, and I doubt it'll run under 1.x. Development of the MUI version is pretty slow at the moment, but it sort of works.

The A1k.org site is blocked here in work so I'll have a look later on :)

I've finally got around to posting up some photos of my current project - an MP3 jukebox based on an A1200 and an old CD player. This has been my project, on and off, for years now, but is finally nearly there :)

Yep, if you're thinking of phones, many of them work as mass storage, and many use a standard memory card which can be read on the Amiga. Pretty much all Nokias do...

Yep, Nikon SLRs work with OS4.1 update 2. However, a GSM camera might be a different story. How do you connect to it with a PC to see the pictures?

Yes, it's a type of BASIC but with the includes it comes with, a lot of it feels a bit like C - especially when you use things like MUI. I'm not that great a programmer at this level (though I program firmware in C and ASM for my job), but find it nice and flexible, and able to do most things C is capable of.

Don't have much time for it at the moment, but click here for a screenshot of my current project. It uses AmiBlitz, MUI and several of the supplied includes.

Yeah, AmiCAD is a totally different beast, but a pretty decent package for electronics schematic drawing!

It looks like a Cherry alright... Which I'm pretty happy with, seeing as they are my keyboard brand of choice - to the point where the IT department in work poke fun at me ;) Every time I get a new PC I hand them back the cheap Dell keyboard and put my trusty Cherry back on the desk.

LOL, it really feels like the bottom of the pile when the IT department can make fun of you

Re: Getfile.gadget update

Not too shy to talk

I'm not too familiar with the getfile.gadget, but shouldn't it be easy for the child (in this case, the ASL requester) to inherit any tags that getfile.gadget doesn't use itself? Similar mechanisms exist in MUI for example, so as many tags as you like can be passed to the parent object, which will pass them to the child if they're not relevant to the parent. I don't think each tag should have to be implemented twice for this...

I know all that, I've been an Amigan for 20 years. I don't have a problem remembering hotkeys or finding things in the ASL menu. I know how it all works.

However, as my little test (mentioned earlier) shows, people not familiar with AmigaOS are puzzled by the requesters because they find certain things illogical and/or unintuitive. And ASL is just one example: remember Thom Holwerda's AmigaOS4.1 article on OSnews? Why did this highly experienced computer user think that OS4 didn't want to "let him in"?

You cannot just tell these people, "Learn the OS!"

First, UIs should work in the same way regardless of platform, so as the user feels comfortable with them. A Windows/Mac/Linux user should not fail to save a file using an Amiga filerequester - if they do, something is wrong, and it's not the user. Quirkiness and idiosyncrasies in the UI only contribute to the learning curve - it takes enough time to learn the program functions so spare the user from having to learn the interface as well.

Well, this is true, however I don't think the ASL system is really that complicated - is it just because it has a menu which other platforms don't? I have had to explain where people's files went after they have used the Mac save requester after only using Windows. Why don't Apple use the same requester as Windows? I don't think everything should be made to look the same just because that's what users are used to. Something like the file requester is different on each OS, just like the file structure itself. Look at all the Windows users who are used to calling their drives by letters - that makes no sense whatsoever, but it doesn't seem to matter. People learn very quickly once they get to use it, and it's quite normal for people to call hard drives "C" drives as a result.

Don't get me wrong, however, I don't agree with keeping things needlessly complicated for the sake of it, but just because Windows and other OSes don't have a menu strip doesn't mean it's going to make a user not choose AmigaOS as a platform. If an operator is open to using another platform, there are far bigger issues to deal with than having to remember that there's a menu on a file requester. Like "where's my 'Start' button?" or "Which one is my C: drive?"

@acefnq

It's probably not the KVM, but have you tried booting without it attached? Even without a keyboard and mouse attached you should still get a normal boot. Do you have a CD in the drive? Some sort of bootable USB drive which is messing with your boot sequence? Can you boot reliably from the OS4 CD?

Re: ASL File Requester enhancements

@serpi

PPaint uses a custom requester, i.e. it is coded as part of the application. Of course anyone can do that, but a) Why should we have to? b) It will take much longer to develop even the tiniest of apps, and c) The user will end up with different requesters in every app, with no system-wide consistency. In PPaint you were able to select an option to use the ASL requester instead, which meant that you chose your filetype etc. in a different window.

Hehe, wow... Maybe I'm the only one here who actually likes the ASL file requester? Something which you can do on the Amiga which still really annoys me in Windows is still move the calling window when a requester is open. Windows simple won't let you, meaning you have to cancel the requester before you move the window. Please please please don't introduce this "feature" on the Amiga!

Re: A1-X1000 with 2GHz Dual Core POWER?

@Antique

Quite true! We hardly have any software that takes advantage of the PPC at all, let alone any which would benefit greatly from 64-bit. Much of the software still in use is 68k - 64 bit will make little difference here except possibly some small improvements in Petunia.

If the OS arrives with 64-bit, you're likely not to notice at all until a while down the road when you get a half-dozen or so apps which show a moderate improvement in speed. But if it arrives with proper dual core support you'll really feel it - 68k emulation on one core and video decoding while web browsing on the other will show you an immediate benefit for example.

Re: ASL File Requester enhancements

@serpi

Yes, that's already there as a hook, but not many applications use it... The Workbench Preferences programs do IIRC - try opening a non-picture file as a WBPattern backdrop. It doesn't even list them, regardless of file extension. Maybe some applications should be updated to use it. However, the save as filetype is needed as for example, a sample editing app could save the sample as IFF, MP3, WAV etc...

What makes you not believe that? Slightly above ?1,500 is *lower* than ?1,500, which is less than the "north of ?1500" estimate Trevor gave us. ?1,500 is around ?1,800 currently, so you should expect at least "north of" ?1,800, which could quite easily top ?2,000...

I (for example) not use any 68k program on my os4. Only 1 time in half of year, running some games/demos over euae for 30 minuts , just to see that it works. All the stuff which i really use every day - os4 native (and i think i am not alone with it for now).

Whereas I on the other hand wouldn't have much use for an OS4 machine if it didn't run 68k apps. If I have to run them in an emulated environment, I might as well use UAE on the PC and sell my A1 for a lot of money!

Besides, taking 68k out will do squat for improving the OS. Most of the problems stem from memory protection and the likes which are legacy API issues with very little to do with 68k except they were both used on the Amiga 25 years ago. You'll still have the same API under OS4, it just runs on a different CPU. And why emulate these APIs in a sandbox when it's there natively anyway, and so will run much, much faster?
