Re: Constructing a null modem

Just can't stay away

@LyleHaze
The only OS4 NG hardware I've had that was a complete 9 pin serial port was my µA1. I used it with a dialup modem using hardware hand-shaking. I was really disappointed when I got my SAM440 and discovered that it had a 3 wire serial port. I had to lower the speed of my dialup modem and use souftware hand-shaking. As far as I know, all the NG hardware since the original AmigaOnes have been 3 wire.

@JosDuchIt
In the event you plan to try your null modem cable, you might want a shell command like echo2debug.lha at OS4Depot to see if your cable is working.

I'll investigate the jitter. I got this early on in development, but thought I'd resolved it - I've not had any issue for a while, but that doesn't mean I've not just been lucky.

To me the sound play after a pause sounds like it started from 2 different points but that be what you refer to as 'jitter'.

@sierratu
O.K. I think the problem mritter0 needs to overcome with Enhancer sound.datatype is pause/play. When play is resumed the sound is garbled. His MP3 player would be fantastic if that problem is fixed.

Re: Change datatype volume

@mritter0

I removed the pause/resume from my test program and added more volume changes. Here are my results:

aiff.datatype - Sent the termination signal after the first volume change but there were no volume changes.

wav.datatype - The volume changes worked but seemed to be delayed by a second or 2.

8svx.datatype - The first 2 volume changes worked (delayed) and the rest of the volume changes were ignored.

The response to volume changes seems to vary among different sound datatype sub-classes.

As I mentioned in your "Change datatype volume" topic, when I switched to the OS4 sound.datatype, I wasn't getting any pause at all. I might retest all this tomorrow to see if I tested correctly.

No, I did not revert back to the original datatypes. Should that really matter? sound.datatype is what is in control of the output level, not the wav/mpeg.datatype, yes?

I'm not sure if it matters. I was just thinking of a reason for the failure. However, I removed the Enhancer datatypes and reverted to the OS4 datatypes for testing. I tested with an AIFF sound file and a WAV sound file. The pause and resume didn't seem to work at all with the OS4 sound datatypes and only one volume change worked. I tried a decrease in volume and a few seconds later an increase in volume. The volume decrease worked but the sound just stopped playing when I increased the volume.

Unless we're both doing something wrong, the prospects for using datatypes to write a sound player with good user control don't look good

Did you restore all the individual datatypes (WAV, mpega etc.) back to the original OS4FE datatypes when you tested with the v53.6 sound.datatype?

Re: screen switching, how to get rid of black intermittant sceen

@Severin
I've used the same (VGA) monitor since I bought my first NG Amiga. I've upgraded hardware several times with each system using a different graphics card. With each new hardware, I had to change the monitor prefs in those programs that save the ModeID in their prefs. I set all my screenmodes to 16 bit because I had several programs that won't work on 32 bit screens. I could switch to 32 bit screens now but I don't know if it will be any improvement for me since I'm partially color-blind.

Re: Enhancer sound.datatype pause/resume

@mritter0
I added your pause and resume code to a small playsound program. I added a small AmigaDOS Delay() before pausing the play and a small AmigaDOS Delay() before resuming sound play. I used a 5 second 8SVX vocal message and converted that message to RIFF-WAV for testing. I tested with the OS4FE 8SVX and WAV datatypes; then tested with the Enhancer WAV datatype. In all cases the Enhancer sound.datatype was used.

The OS4 8SVX and WAV datypes seemed to skip a fraction of a second of the sound when play was resumed but the sound played normally.

When I performed the same test with the Enhancer WAV datatype, the sound play resumed with the same garbling you described.

I can confirm the garbling problem with the Enhancer WAV datatype when the sound play is paused and then resumed.

This code works, but when resume the audio is partially garbled. Almost like it is playing from 2 spots, just slightly off, at the same time.

The problem could be in one of the sound datatypes (WAV, 8SVX, mpega etc). What type of sound are you playing?

In my 'Screens' prefs, I have no Screen mode set in the 'Display' tab and the screen mode is set in most of my programs that open a screen. The 'GUI' and 'Palette' tabs have "Like Workbench" set.

@TrevorDick
I can only suggest you try 2 things:

1. Before starting Odyssey, move all the database files (the ones with a .db extension) in the Odyssey Conf directory to a backup directory (using a filemanager like Dopus4).

2. If the above procedure didn't help, run Snoopy to see if Odyssey fails to find or load any files.

The "terminal" is a terminal program running on the computer at the receiving end of the null-modem cable. Check out:

'Buffering' is the non streaming approach, load the whole sample into a memory buffer, so you have your terminology backwards there.

I was just using the term 'buffering' to differentiate between network streaming and file streaming. I suppose everything on a computer is buffered in some way because CPU instructions only access memory or registers.
Quote:
Datatypes as a whole work of AmigaDOS file handles (even DTST_MEMORY has a internal 'memory-hander' that opens the memory buffer as if a it was a file) so to do streaming from an internet src you would "simply" need an 'http-handler' that could handle http streams and then open HTTP:url/to/stream/ or similar.

Sounds good in theory but I'd be suprised if anyone does it.

I converted a CD music file to WAV and played it from a USB stick. It played but my X5000 went into slow motion. I had to click on a window close button and hold down of the mouse button for several seconds to get the window to close. To start a program from Amidock I had to hold the mouse button down for a second or 2 on the icon. Double clicking on a volume icon didn't work at all; no window opened. However, when I copied the music file to RAM: is seemed to play O.K.

Search for '7.1 surround sound sample wav' that ought to get you some, though the only ones I found on a quick search were "for sale" and not cheap either.

The few free & downloadable ones I found appeared to use WAV as a wrapper for audio in another format. They either didn't play at all or just produced a hissing sound on my speakers.

Maybe you should include some sample multichannel WAV music files in Enhancer because I couldn't find any in an Internet search.

Probably because you can't return the full audio data if you're playing a live stream (e.g., internet radio). The guys who wrote the spec. were thinking ahead...

I don't think the Enhancer streaming datatypes can be used for live streaming. They just stream from a file instead of loading all the audio data into memory at once. I think it would be less confusing to call them buffering datatypes. If I'm wrong about that I would invite a correction.

As a temporary workaround for broken applications, can SDTA_Continuous, FALSE be set in the NewDTObject call? At least temporarily to check this fixes it?

Tried that. If you use GetDTAttrs() to get SDTA_Continuous after
a NewDTObject call that doesn't set SDTA_Continuous, it is already FALSE.
Setting it to FALSE in NewDTObject() doesn't change anything; SDTA_Sample is still NULL.
