Re: AmiCygnix slow booting

@kilaueabart

No, there is nothing wrong.
The best way to execute the script is to launch it with it's icon on the workbench! Or you change the current directory to "Cygnix:S/Utilities" before launching the script.

@kilaueabart

I guess you have to rebuild the cache files. Please launch the script

"Cygnix:S/Utilities/Refresh-ALL-Caches.bat"

Afterwards AmiCygnix should work again.

I can help testing yes. But not right now as i don't have an amiga atm.
But when i do i will gladly help. Just send me a notice when you have fixed it. And you don't have to stress to fix it.

The new loader package with the PDF loader is now online at OS4-depot. Now go and get your new Amiga .

I was wondering about a thing. Tried gimp on windows the other day. And found that gimp could load pdf documents. Is this also possible on the amiga version? Was a nice feature i'd like to be able to use.

Damn - you got me. I've forgotten to add this plug-in to the loader package .
When I have some time I will create and upload a new package. I can send you a download link to the plug-in for testing if you like?

Which library? it is compiled by Epson?

Yes, there are only binary packages available for Linux.
If you look at http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-external.html, some listed scanners have things like this in the comment column:

"network interface supported via DFSG non-free iscan-network-nt package"

or

"requires DFSG non-free iscan-plugin-gt-7300"

These libs / plug-ins can be downloaded at:
http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/scan/DL1.do

BTW: Even the frontend "iscan" needs a non free library (libesmod), so only the basic backend ("epkowa") can be compiled for AmigaOS.

@ cha05e90

I recommend Epson scanners for XSane, for example "Epson Perfection 1650 Photo" or "Epson Perfection 3200 Photo". My XSane port includes three different epson backends: "epson", "epson2" and "epkowa" (original Epson backend). So chances are high, that a Epson scanner works.

But: My port of the original Epson backend - which normally supports the current Epson scanners - does not support much more scanners than the Sane backend "epson2", because these scanners do need a non free library only available for Linux . Shame on Epson.
See documentation on http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-external.html

There was a link in the PM I sent you.

Here it is again:

Were you able to download my archive with the RealVNC client?

@ JosDuchIt

I've ported the VNC package from RealVNC (current version 4.1.3, http://www.realvnc.com) to AmiCygnix. Didn't make deeper tests, but the client works fine so far. Also a simple server for X11 is working, but not very useful.

I can create a package, if it is interesting for you.

@ all

The problem is a bug in the installer script. I've fixed the bug and I'm uploading a new archive right now...

6000x8000? Then I know, why it is so slow .
As usual my AmiCygnix progs are not the fastest, but also because we have only USB 1.1 it needs some time.

Can it be a problem of my gfx driver? I'm using the radeonhd driver on my sam460.

I really have no idea. The X server renders the gfx data directly into the bitmap. Maybe a timing problem while moving the mouse.

Of course you can select the region you want to scan. Just use your mouse in the preview window. If there is no preview window, you can open it by selecting the menu item "Window/Show preview".

Resized Image

There is a auto selection button:

Resized Image

But it is not very useful.

To the image size: Which resolution did you choose? The size of the picture depends on the resolution and the size of the selected region.

@ Antique

That's a funny effect. On my machine (SAM flex / Radeon 9250) moving right or left is the same.

Hmm - I wished the window manager "openbox" could move windows without the content. I think I will add an alternative window manager to my next AmiCygnix update, who is able to do that.

Btw, its that "pango" uses everythere ? I mean if you try for example to make simply plain window in amicygnix, and trying to move it, will it the same slow as if it app with pango usage, or it will faster as native ?

Pango is the font renderer and layouter of GTK 2 and is responsible for internationalisation. GTK 2 highly depends on pango and most of my AmiCygnix programs are using GTK 2.

Since version 2.8 GTK uses cairo for basic gfx operations and also pango uses cairo in GTK 2.8.

@ kas1e

Thanks for the archive!

I'm using exactly the same versions of cairo and pixman for AmiCygnix. My current GTK2 port (2.10.4) is using it for rendering. But there is no difference compared to my older port of GTK 2.6.9.

In other words, if you do your tests with SDKs cairo, just try to make the same tests again, but just build your owb cairo (its simply ./configure; make in general). Maybe it will have differences as well.

Sounds interesting. Where can I find the OWB sources?

On the other hand I can launch the example program with an option that avoids opening a display, so I can see the pure time needed for rendering. It is also slow here.

Then the next bounty should be to do a wrapper Amicygnix => Intuition.

Is it possible to do it step by step? What's the first step? GTK?

I don't think, that I have to remove all dependencies to AmiCygnix to create a native GTK. Basically AmiCygnix programs do only use an utility library with my unix functions and a directory tree similar to Unix. Nothing more! What I have to remove is the dependency to the X server.

There are several ways for reach this goal:

* Create a X11 wrapper library. Advantage: I could easily port any X11 software just by relinking my current GTK/X11 programs. Disadvantage: The program will have the same look and feel like the original GTK program.
There was already an attempt to this by Terje Pedersen (in 1996 I guess). I've ported it for OS4, but it is unusuable.

* I could make a GTK port using the native Cairo port. Same disadvantage as above. And - as described in my previous post - "pango" is not faster.

* A GTK wrapper, that uses MUI or Reaction. There is already an attempt to do this. I don't know, how much it proceeded.
