Sorry, maybe i understand somethink wrong, but did not that default intuition look for upcoming update? I just think before, that is it. Or it's just optional "theme"?

Anyway, good to see progress on FF. Hope you will release beta binaryes soon :)

That's "just" a theme. The default theme for intuition is what you see in the Timberwolf screenshots, drop shadows and all

Good progress, but what about showing any "heavy" www page ?:) Friden's one pretty simply and primitive to say somethink ..

As Thom wrote in the update message, there are a few rendering errors on some web pages. In addition, there was an odd error during rendering created by degenerated rectangles when calculating damage regions. I think that one's fixed now, not sure though.

And yeah, I know our web page is pretty primitive, it was supposed to be viewable with IBrowse.

I think Next version of Firefox (Namoroka) includes Personas for themes:

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Namoroka

These are supported by 3.5 as well as an extension.

I've seen XULRunner screenshot, have you planned to port all XPCOM modules and so all Mozilla Framework?

We're running a "normal" build of Firefox with app=browser,. This does build all of XPCOM; there are some additional components for e.g. Thunderbird, and there are others that do not build from the official source code at all (for example PyXCOM).

I like the original Firefox theme, expecially the buttons, so please don't touch it (or almost make also other themes as a choice)

Windows and Linux use a slightly different theme because they use native widgets, i.e. some of the buttons for example are rendered using GDK on Linux. They use something called nsINativeTheme that takes over some of the rendering. We don't have that (yet?) so it renders using the default Firefox look.

In any case, you will be able to use any theme you like that is not depending on a specific OS.

Quote:
Aniway on Firefox PC/Mac/Linux close gadgets are already there, I don't know why isn't present on your actual core source

See above. The default theme only shows the close buttons if you hover the mouse over them. Depending on the Linux distro you might be using, the default theme might be modified to fit into the Look and Feel of the desktop.

I just asked whether network support was done over on AW.net, but see that you've answered it here already. With Gecko working and networking implemented, do you essentially have a complete initial port? Any major features that are still to do? Or is it a case of eliminating bugs, etc.?

The Widget part isn't complete yet. There are a few things to do still (for example, popup windows that move with their parent). Networking had its share of problems too, like I pointed out (gethostbyname not being reentrant), we still have a while to go.

And several thousand lines too. The IntuiMessage dumping alone is already gigantic.

@kas1e

Network support is in, but there was a problem with a race condition where two threads try to gethostbyname() simultaneously, we're going to replace that by a re-entrant version.

Speed is a non-issue at this point. The build produces tons of debug output, so don't ask for any speed measuring.

The presence of close buttons on the tab depends on the theme used. This theme doesn't have any. We hope to make a more Amiga-specific theme at one point (if we ever figure out how that works ;))

@nexus

It should be possible to port Thunderbird and Sunbird and the Seamonky suite after Firefox, the base facilities are there. It will be work, but not as much as the initial port.

@Alpyre

Nice icon :) Thanks!

I'm afraid that a release of the source code is very unlikely at this stage, even more so considering the reactions on AW.net.

@Chris

I ran the test on my machine and get 6, 4, 3 and 0 seconds... so I would say yes, there is an improvement :)

Will you try to let the plugins work or some or isn't this a high pri?)

If you mean by plugins the add-ons for Firefox, they should work unless they require OS-specific version (for example, PicLens will require a specific OS).

Plugins like a flash player will be a high priority to get working after the original browser runs.

Hopefully it means cairo_clip() now operates at a useable speed. At the moment if you try to call it more than once per day you end up waiting a millenia for anything to happen.

Maybe someone with access to the latest builds could tell us
the effect of this is? Huge speedup, noticable speedup or no visable speedup?

It's not with the beta testers yet. Major speed improvements are solid color composes and composites.

Composites are an obvious speed-up candidate. The solid color composes affect things like text output and path stroking/filling.

Speedups are very noteworthy in some areas and rather minor in others; the surfaces have to be in video ram now so direct access is slower, but in general, speed has improved.

now question is: When?

Right now it's "When it's Done". I'll try to qualify this a bit.

What we are working on right now is 'widget'. That is the part of Mozilla/Gecko that copes with mapping to the native window system. Gecko assumes a hierarchical system where you have windows and child windows, which we don't have on AmigaOS so we need to simulate this. This has repercussions in the way that e.g. input events are handled (they need to go the "child" window).

Widget is really the biggest chunk in getting the Browser to work on AmigaOS. Once that is done, most of the browser should work. Most of the browser actually DOES work already, however, it will freeze after a second or two trying to display something.

We'd also like to adapt as many Amiga-specific features as possible. For example, I hope we can make the menus work like AmigaOS menus. This will mostly depend on the requirements for menus, and how much needs to be changed within the system to get this to work. Early versions might work without such features and go for the plain stuff.

All in all, we hope to have an alpha version by the end of the year. HOPE because for one thing we cannot really predict the amount of work left and what kind of problems are still there, and also because the MAP ("most ambitious project") is taking up a lot of time, and will do so even more in the coming weeks, meaning Timberwolf will be going down in terms of time spend on it.

Hope this answers it a bit. As it is now, we cannot give any firm commitment to a date, since all of this is a hobby project, and I have ArmA II installed on my PC as well

I hope this doesnot mean we will never see Firefox on OS3.x

See, this is one of the things that irks me. Why oh why do people think that because we don't do it, it will never happen? Why do people (especially over at aw.net) behave like we're actively hindering the work on other OSes? The source code for Firefox has been out for YEARS, and yet nobody could get his act together and port it. Why does the fact that we are doing it now change ANYTHING for the other "camps"?

What do you need from us, the users?

I'm afraid there is little that users can do, other than to buy the stuff. I don't like it that everybody is in limbo regarding future planes, but unfortunately there is little I can do about that.

If anybody is looking for a project to attempt, there are plenty - OpenOffice and a JDK just to mention two of the most pressing.

@DaveP

There is only one thing that the Amiga needs - money. You can go on and list all the blatantly obvious things that are missing and that would be either "neat to have" to "essential", but it all boils down to the fact that you have to do something that can be financed. All the talk about getting X or Y, be it USB 2.0, OpenGL, or whatever else, is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN unless there is enough money to pay people to do it.

If there is no commercial drive behind a project, it is going to move at glacial speed. People need a motivation, either money or something else equally strong, to stick with a project through those times where it isn't fun anymore, and yeah, there's plenty of times like that.
