Re: Clockport Ethernet

@TetiSoft & AmiDog

Interesting replies chaps !
I only ask cos:
a) its theoretically possible and we all know what that means, and
b) I remember a hack doc on aminet detailing the clockport which seemed to suggest that one either existed, or would soon.

of course, the USB route would be interesting in and of itself ! just a tad pricey...

Clockport Ethernet

Has anyone ever done (or considered doing) an Ethernet adaptor for the A1200 clockport ?

a back-of-fag-packet calculation indicates a bandwidth of at least 2-3 MB/sec at the clockport, so ought to be doable to at least have 10MBit ethernet.

thoughts please ! can't be that hard can it ? (In traditional Top Gear manner !)

I've considered getting one of these for a while now - are there any OS4 drivers ? I have a spare 880K DD drive somewhere...

Re: BasiliskII

@Mikey_C

I know it'll work on a classic, but can it be done on OS4 ?
I got Basilisk II running (and Shapeshifter too !) on OS4 within E-UAE sdl - but only with the 7.1.1 boot image.
not been able to generate another disk image though - although that may have been something to do with the interaction the other way between the shapeshifter control and OS4 via E-UAE and OS3.9

fun innit !

I guess then the story is not all bad here. ICab has gone on from 68k to PPC and has developed into a very nice broweser for a limited audience, is there any way it could be redirected at AOS4 and synergies achieved?

ace

if you're going to talk about synergies, then you should really put it as 'leveraged at AOS4'. but if you do that I shall have to ask you to step outside !

@Spirantho

I'll download and play (hopefully) this weekend.

My computing is in a state of turmoil - I've been kicked out of me office, and its been painted all pink and girly for my youngest who is soon to move in (17 months ahhh!) when she does, I'll get a shiny new Ikea desk, and better yet, a spanky new TFT monitor !
havent decided if I want one with a TV in - it'll help with the A1200 situation, but might make the TV card redundant !

I'll have a look at the tuneable version too.

You want a bigger bitmap if you've got a window on a large screen, which is going to happen more and more as monitors get higher resolutions. I can assemble the output and scale, but it's slower than I'd like, and rules out proper Overlay support.

Ok, understood - just a PITA whichever way I suppose !

-edit-
although could one not get the graphics card to scale the 'overlay' bitmap somehow ?

Interesting what you said about watching the test match. I didn't even think I'd released a version with the tuner activated! It's something I want to add fairly soon to the Cx2388x card.

you sent it to me, muppet ! it was really good - worked a charm on Update 2-3, then stopped working for some reason. I tried recompiling - but I had to find a bt878.h from somewhere. as I recall, it struggles around the point of generating P97 bitmaps, but I could be wrong !!

Quote:

As for it being a bug that's not in the Cx chipset - I don't know, as it's not raising any interrupts! It's very possible if I work out how to make those interrupts trigger, then it'll still crash!

I guess that in itself could be a bug - still such is the life of the driver writer eh!

@Spirantho

interesting stuff.

the bitmap bit interests me - why would one want a bitmap bigger than PAL (768x576) ? could you not assemble the output and then scale as required, or pump the output to a PAL res screen (say 800x600) ?

I did notice that the BT would lock up AOS when the signal wasnt good, but I was able to work (proper paid work that is!) on me laptop, while watching the Ashes Test series some days on my A1 for long periods. C4 was pretty good in me room, 5 and Two would cause problems sometimes - but then, i was using a loop aerial nicked from me kids' portable - however it would also sometimes lock when displaying RF output from a ZX-Spectrum too.
Is there nothing in the Dev notes for the BT8x8 to limit this? I guess it could just be a bug that Connexant ironed out when developing the Cx2388x. (Brooktree were bought out by Connexant a few years back).

Good luck, and I'll watch with interest !
I think I'll try my current TV-card in my kids' Peecee to compare notes....

I used to use AmiTV on the old (update 3 I believe) OS4 - I'd love to have a new version too!
I still have the BT878 card, so if you need any help (Alpha/Beta Testing, etc) give me a shout.
I believe you have my email, but a PM will do just as nicely...

Well, I've only got an XE with a G3, so I'd probably get one. I'd sell the A1 if I had to. but of course, this is rather moot, as we need to get OS4 on the Sam first!

no worries !
besides, English is my native language, and I 'get the wrong end of the stick' all the time.
I work in IT support, so I know the excrement that can get dished out, and wouldnt dream of dishing it out meself, especially when the work was done off your own bat, and effectively for fun.

apologies if I'm being too idiomatic here btw!

now now old chap, steady on - I dunno if you've had a hard day, but you might've misread my intentions.

Anyway, down to facts:

- your adaptec will never be supported by uboot. Thus you will never be able to boot your system entirely from an SCSI drive that is hooked to it. I chose to support lsi just because it is the *only* scsi chip supported in uboot.

fair enough, I wont buy it then. I only asked the question to see if it would work before I bought.

Quote:

- the reason why there exists an OS4 scsi driver is that I was gently asked and convinced by some os4 betatesters, to write one to help the community transferring hardware and data from older systems to os4 machines. I *made the effort*, to *please them*, on my *spare time*, at *night*, to try & fill that need. All that *without any compensation of any form*, *just to be helpful*.

good for you, this community could do with more like you - people who a) can be arsed, b) have the time

Quote:

- now you don't seem to like that you have bought an os4-unsupported hardware, and that eventually you realize that it is os4-unsupported. Given the tone of your wording, I don't share the disease.

errrr when did I say I actually bought the adaptec card ?
I see how this has arisen now. sorry if I got you up on a misunderstanding, but I wasnt having a rant ! I'm better than that ... and nicer too!
thing is, I dont have that much disposable income to chuck good money after bad on hardware that might not be supported - with the exception of the TV Card, but that worked quite well until update 3 or 4...
Quote:

- finally, yes, I indeed suggest that you (or anyone else wanting an adaptec driver), download the SDK, a driver template, the adaptec chip docs, the linux or netbsd code for inspiration, and *make the effort* to code a new driver (which I made myself earlier).

I dont really want to have to write a driver - I already have intent to write one for a BT878 (more than I can chew ? probably. enough time ? definitely not!) and already have a copy of the SDK - I'd much rather buy hardware for which drivers exist, as I said earlier.

really, I wasnt griping and bitching - I know some do, but I dont.

Quote:

Aloha.

indeedy - and get some sleep ! one more thing, nbache was right in just about every way - I'd've been on sooner, but for some reason, amigans doesnt play nice with the version of IE I have at work, hence me not reading this until I finally got round to getting the miggy online just now.

and I would also like to say that people like you make it possible, keep it up, some of us do appreciate these efforts.

Peace man.
