Re: David May, parallel processors. Xmos

Just popping in

The basic language of Xcore chips is C, with extensions in it's own
language called XC. Yes, they are both available on Linux and in compiled
form should work under OS4.

Other things to do(??)

How about a three axis mouse/joystick. X,Y,and Z. Something like a sprite
that you move left-right, up-down, in-out (larger-smaller) to get around
in a game. I'm not a game player, but you know how, like in Doom, the bad
guys can run away but you can't see your avatar chase them, nor can you
see another bad guy pop out and attack you. You turn your head to look
for one and wind up falling off an edge. If you had a 3 axis mouse and
a game written for it...........whole new experience.

When you're done playing the game you place the special mouse in a cradle
so it can monitor your weather station and simply tell Xena to have her
workers change jobs with a push of F6, or a click of the standard mouse.

Oh boy! What I would have given to have this technology when I was into
model trains. Disrtibuted CPUs all talking to one another and under my
master control. King Of The World!

It is the external memory that is a bottleneck. The on-chip (now called cache)
memory is what was added to help with the problem.

If you could load and run all programs out of cache memory it would avoid
the need to go outside of the CPU to find the next instruction or store a
result, which in turn may require yet another instruction fetch.

Xmos chips are not designed as large do-it-all CPUs that must keep their
finger on the pulse of even the smallest of tasks. Instead they are given
their instructions and told to get-it-done, or work with other chips that
have their orders, and report back when the job is finished and await further instructions.
The big boss should not need to concern himself with tightening every screw in the proper order, and then sweep the floor.

As for access to main memory. Xena/Xorro can communicate with the CPU and
there is the inline PCIe slot which may provide DMA for fully independent
operation of a subsystem.

What can it be used for?
What can you dream up that fits within the operational parameters of
software defined CPUs?

First question should be:
What do I need to help me understand how to apply this technology, and way
of thinking, to real world situations and virtual world ideas.

This is OT, but does anyone know what the X1000 will be using for sound?
I don't know if it's been announced or not, I just don't recall. (???)

Of course more apps are better, but I think we can do the same type of things with Rebol.

Just my POV.

Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.....uck!

Before I start reloading AmigaOS I would like to report that the latest
version of R3 is working with the hardware networking devices. My brain
however seems to be elsewhere.

Nice work ssolie.

One answer you didn't suggest (at least not directly) was that they are waiting until X1000 for big advertising push... Well, we can hope!

The way I see it.

Pretty much all depends on X1000 and what comes with it. It can either become
THE computer enthusiast dream machine, or just another vehicle for a great OS.

I am saying computer enthusiast because even though other devices and systems
may offer more initial bang for the buck, they are not suited to 'computing'.
Especially young people, interested in computing, could be enticed to Amiga.
Not the ones that download something from an 'app' store and think the are
computer savvy, but the the ones that will envision the future, and the ones
that want to tag along for the ride.

The software will come. Not because there is demand for millions of copies, but
rather because the people using the system have and show great appreciation for
the hard work, ingenuity, and creativity of the programmers both pro and amateur.
Everyone can make a contribution either by developing or simply using/testing
others work.

Anyway, that's how I see it. Windows, A BOX with an OS. Linux, a BOX with a OS.
Mac, a BOX with a OS. We, and I am talking about the equipment, the OS, and the
community, can be of great value. It's up to those who can make Amiga mean
something special in this 'me too' world. I'll take the chance on X1000, A-eon,
Hyperion, and all those in the project, , , including us.

As for a OS4 site......it will happen......it has to, and they know it.

CarlS did the port to the OS but it is not fully functional on the hardware yet.
At least as far as the last time I used it.

The language works with OS4, but I believe Ssolie has taken the job of getting
all the parts to work on/with the various hardware, and right now he is a pretty busy
fellow. It will get done.

I'm not sure if it can do the same as skype, but maybe with some tweeking..........

The two patches did make a difference! Before, videos above 640x480 were jerky but now I can play DVD resolution smoothly using DvPlayer. Also, demos and games under E-UAE are noticeably faster now.

I just posted this in the News comments, but it also seems to fit here.

Regarding MPlayer and DVplayer.
I have no idea why, but neither player would present a DVD playback without extreme
frame skipping and voice way out of sync while using the standard CD/DVD connection
of the 440ep/667MHz. To get decent playback the SATA cable had to be plugged into
the connector under the HD standard connector (port 1 in MPlayer GUI).

Those problems, and others, are now gone after doing just the pci-mini-update. The
sam440ep_setup has also added to the performance of the Sam.

Looks like Amiga version stopped around 2002 so it's probably not
going to work with OS4+.

Go into System > Utilities > USB Inspector and select the joypad/controller you're
plugging in.
If it shows - Driver: None
Then the device is not supported and AmigaInput will not display it

Just as you said.

I tried the *link* stuff without success. Perhaps not all Sams are created
equal. (?)

Here's another wierd thing. Since making the mods I mentioned, both
DVPlayer and Mplayer now keep the sound in sync with the video.
Before it would drift radically. And playback is smoother.

I don't know where this bug is, ROM, hardware, OS, USB stack,,,,
but there is one.
