@Antique
It's taking place in Milton Keynes, not very far from London. If you get a fligh to London Luton Airport, it's actually closer, faster and cheaper to get to Milton Keynes than to central London!

Booked my flight, see you there!

@yoodoo2 Quote: The majority of the work is going to have to be unpaid - ie the proofreading, editing, typesetting etc (that's why I need the community involved).
I strongly recommend setting up a project using a project management/collaboration tool, such as ClockingIT (a free alternative to the popular BaseCamp): http://www.clockingit.comThis way you'll have an overview of assigned tasks and deadlines, project team activity, task progress, and a centralized repository of files. Team members can discuss things and leave comments. All in one place instead of keeping e-mail communication with several people and then looking for info/data scattered in countless e-mails in your mailbox. You can allow selected OS developers to follow project activity and comment on it, providing an invaluable feedback and making necessary corrections.

Thanks for the information, Rigo! What about the drawer name highlighting (see above), is there a chance it gets into the next public release as well?

Utility to add items to Workbench's Tools menu

Can anybody recommend an OS4-native utility that allows adding items to Workbench's Tools menu?

@salass00 Could be, but that's not what the autodoc gives as reason for introducing the new tag, or its intended use

@Daedalus
I agree absolutely. The idea was to prevent user confusion as to what is happening, why the input is blocked. I can understand the reasons for implementing the StayOnTop tag, and I originally thought it was a cool feature.
But on second thoughts: shouldn't it be the PROGRAMMER'S duty to provide enough (visual or other) clues that a requester is opened and a user input is expected? Instead of forcing a requester on top (and getting in the way) of other windows?

@ChrisH
Another idea.
When RunInUAE is running and a 68k program is started, a requester appears asking me if I want to run the program in UAE. I KNOW this is exactly how you wanted RunInUAE to behave but could this feature be possibly made optional? I mean, being on by default if you like it but switchable off in the settings? I don't run many 68k programs (CubicIDE, AmigaAMP, CodeAudio) and none of them I'd want to run in UAE so it makes sense to me to be able to turn the request off.

@Cyborg
Thank you! And while we're at it, could you also pass the following feature request to the ASL maintainer? I proposed it some time ago, and was told this feature would be implemented in Update 1 - but it apparently was not.
When creating a new drawer using the requester's menu, could the text "Rename_Me" be highlighted by default? You want to enter a new drawer name and will replace the text anyway, so why not make the user's life easier?

The recent version of OS4 (53.34) has introduced the ASLxx_StayOnTop tag in asl.library. Its purpose, quoted from the autodoc, is the following:
"When set to TRUE, this stops requesters being depth-arranged. Useful especially in cases where the parent window input is blocked while the requester is open, otherwise the requester may be pushed to the back of the stack of windows, and the user may be confused as to what is blocking the input."
Looks like a good idea that has the user in mind. Well, partly.
If you open a file requester with "ASLFR_StayOnTop, TRUE" and then use the requester's menu to create a new drawer, the small window for entering drawer name silently opens HIDDEN BEHIND the requester, and the user absolutely doesn't know what is going on! Try it for yourself in the latest version of CodeBench or WordNet, which both use the tag in their file requesters.
It strikes me that the betatester team let this go because such behaviour is, without any doubt, unacceptable. Well what's done is done; let's talk about how to remedy the situation and how to implement it better.

Most of the time I do not need the GUI at all - I just drag an ADF file icon onto RunInUAE's icon and play. I thought it'd be cool if RunInUAE, instead of opening its window with "Launching XYZ", simply notified of that through a Ringhio message.

@Helgis
The current state of OctaMED ("dead as a parrot") has little to do with Amiga hardware, so the X1000 cannot be expected to change anything. The tracker flew on the 68040, and the current available boards provide more than enough power for such a program - yet we have no OctaMED.
Quite a few people have failed to make a PPC port, lacking resources or struggling with ancient code (probably both). Alfred might have succeeded but his illness prevented him from delivering. I think Ray Burt-Frost lost interest because the project fell through so many times. I doubt he will give his consent ever again.

@ChrisH
Hi Chris,
I've tried RunInUAE for the first time, and I'm quite impressed! The installation was easy and running old games is now a piece of cake. Thanks for the effort, really appreciated!
A couple of comments I thought I'd share:
I don't seem to be able to switch the floppy drive sounds off. I select "No" in the settings but the sounds are played nevertheless?
For the final release, you should really implement proper menu toggles in the settings. This concerns options "E-UAE Stay in Background", "E-UAE Floppy Drive Noises", and "Toggle Basic Workbench mode". Instead of opening requesters, choices should be made simply through ticking/unticking the respective menu items. Thus, the current state of the options is clearly visible and the user has a visual cue for whether they are on or off. (See the RKRM User Interface Libraries, chapter 6: Intuition Menus.)
