Have any ideas about making its "simply and right" ?

I'd simply check the end of the filename provided by the user. If it contains a substring equal to the extension to be added by the program, you just skip the add extension function and leave the filename as it is.

-- Add/Remove auto extension for native aos4 save_file dialog are works fine for now.

It does work, although the implementation could use an extra check for an already-present extension. For example, if Add File Extension is checked and you pass a filename of "Picture.png", the file gets saved as "Picture.png.png".

I'm just curious why you think that MUI should not be available for AOS4.

He never said that MUI shouldn't be available for OS4, you are reading him plain wrong!

Joerg just said he doesn't care anymore, and I perfectly understand that. It is solely upon the author of MUI to decide for or against an OS4 version of MUI4. There are surely no constraints on the part of the OS4 dev team but, at the same time, they have neither a reason nor resources to pay for the port.

If someone wants MUI4 for OS4:

- ask Stefan Stuntz if he would accept bounty money for the port
- get him an OS4-capable machine
- setup a bounty to finance the port

There is really no other way.

Which one do you prefer, the OS4 part (many "small" releases) or the AROS one (one big release)?

It's not a question of preference. I could as well ask "Do you prefer OS4 to be developed in small steps, or in giant leaps?" Would that question be any more sensible than yours?

It's all a matter of resources, as pointed out by others. We currently do not have many developers able to take up a huge project. Most of us are spare-timers, trying to steal an hour or two with Amiga from our daily lives. Difficult to get to anything bigger, really.

Another question is what a "big release" is, especially as we know nothing about the time spent behind a particular project. For example, last summer I was out of work so I started working on WordNet, a program you would perhaps call a "small release". Well it took me almost two months to finish it, often coding 15 hours a day! A big project and a big release for me

Re: Locale prefs editor behaviour
Amigans Defender
Amigans Defender

@Thematic

I can understand the internals but why does the GUI behave like that? I mean, why does it show different kinds of information when selecting more languages?

For instance, the editor shows me that the Czech language is associated with the ISO 8859-2 charset. When I select the language, the charset column disappears. Now if I want to select, say, English as another preferred language, why can't I see the charset anymore? Why does "Directory" suddenly become so important that it replaces the charset?

Where catalogs are stored is an OS internal; as a user, I'm not interested (perhaps even don't know what a catalog is and how locale works).

Locale prefs editor behaviour
Amigans Defender
Amigans Defender

While adding Preferred Languages in the Locale prefs editor, I've noticed the following: When there are no preferred languages, the language list shows three columns named "Language", "Native Name" and "Charset". As soon as I select a language, the list loses one column and now shows only two, "Language" and "Directory".

What is the reason for this behaviour? And what does "Directory" mean?

Note that the save file/format selector is still work in progress, I need to add some more code to check for invalid user input. And the Add Extension function still waits to be implemented I'll try to do all that early next week.

So far in this thread, it seems there is an overwhelming need to allow a programmable gadget which allows the user to select a string from a given list in the Save requester.

This certainly is top priority, as selecting from a list of file formats is far too common a need.

@Rigo

It would also be worth noting in the autodocs for ASL and getfile that as we have ASL prefs (where users can adjust requester appearance and behaviour according to their needs), programmers should only provide tags that do not override the ASL prefs defaults. Unless there's a reason to override them, of course.

Not really a bug, rather an inconsistency:

Some of the Prefs editors open their ASL requesters using the default requester position and size (as set in ASL prefs). Others use some custom values. I think all system components should respect the ASL prefs and use values from there.
