I agree with Lyle .... and I also agree 100 percent with ddni. :) People paying thousands of dollars for the hardware/software to run this operating system deserve to be in the loop quite a bit more than they are now, is my firm belief. I can take bad news. I can take realistic news. I'm starting to be anxious, I freely admit, about the repeating cycle of announcement followed by vacuum.

I appreciate all the work everyone is doing, but I don't think there are any trade secrets to be hidden or any real competition to hide things from. It's all about catching up, or at least slowing the fall-behind rate. The trolls will make noise no matter what is said or not said, so forget them. They don't spend money anyway. Let's all see behind the curtain already. Might make me feel better about spending more money.

liveforit, you already heard it from tommysammy, but confirming that 4.2 works fine here on my X1000. Also, the problem I was having with older versions with playing 720p videos with cgx_wpa has gone away. They play fine here in that mode, although composition is better for fullscreen.

In cgx_wpa mode pausing is fine. In comp mode (not full screen), pausing causes the video picture to be out of alignment with the video window.

Haven't had a chance yet to again test the 30fps H264 770p videos from my camera. The videos I've acquired from online places are 24fps and play just dandy.

I will add that I had intended to use a 9250 card but it turns out my 9250 card is a 5V card and this PCI-X adapter is marked 3.5V. Luckily, I had on hand an older 9200 card. I have been told this is actually faster than the more common 9250 card. Only downside is my 9200 card has only SVGA and compositie video outputs -- no DVI. I had to remove the composite video jack to make this card fit upside down in the slot cover I used to mount the card. The alternative would have been to dremel out a bigger hole in the slot cover.... but it seemed easier to snip off the composite jack that I will never use.

Great results! Since getting my X1000 in 2012 I have been frustrated by my inability to use Blender at workable speeds (talking intertface not rendering) without resorting to Linux. No more! Things in Blender work quite well now that I have installed a Warp3D compatible card via the same PCIe-PCI-X adapter and ribbon extender that Goos mentions in this thread.

Only oddity is that so far I can only get Blender to launch on its own screen via my "new" ATI Radeon 9200 PCI card if the Workbench screen is on that card rather than my Radian HD 6850, which still resides in the same X1000. I'm using both cards in a dual display configuration. But it is worth the hassle of moving Workbench to the 9200 card when I want to run Blender, as Blender works so much better with real Warp3D than it does with the wazp3d otherwise appreciated software solution.

The PCIe 8x to PCI-X adapter gives me a faster PCI slot for the 9200 card than the onboard Nemo PCI slots.... 66mhz rather than 33mhz. The adapter is actually marked 133mhz, but perhaps that requires a real PCI-X card. Not sure.

Physically, the adapter I got is a right angle adapter. So the ribbon extender is needed to make this work. I was able to mount the 9200 card upside down in a leftover slot cover I had on hand using a screw and a nylon tie since only one screw hole matched up. I then used a longer plastic strap i had on hand to give some more support to the rear of the card, connecting to my hard drive cage, so the card would not droop. I put a couple of layers of folded over tape on the inside edge of the 9200 to keep it from shorting anything on the Nemo board in case contact is made. It's awfully close.

Some pictures...

Thanks, Goos, for figuring this out! I previously tried a 9250 card in an X1000 PCI slot but was terribly disappointed at the results when it comes to speed.

Radiance.... I don't know what it is, but I like the sound of it. If it is a new graphics application for AmigaOS, I will buy!

ddni, I'm still waiting on parts. I got the 9250 card (hope it is 128bit as advertised, but it was used and I cannot tell) and the extension cable. The PCI-X adapter should get here next week sometime.

Atheist, when you do wind up with individual numbered frames in ham format, you could most likely use an old free utility (check Aminet) called Rend24 to assemble them into anim format. Whether a particular classic Amiga setup has the horses to play that file at full speed is another matter. I used to manage playback of VistaPro ham8 animations on my A1200 with 50mhz 68030 but it required me to run my animations through Scala's built-in utility to save them in anim32 (I think) format. Good luck!

Heh heh.... liveforit, I love the big-arsed font you went with in this beta2 for the OSD. My less-than-perfect eyesight needs all the help it can get! Getting better every minute.

Meanwhile, the missing OSD info with my liveforit install is resolved. ktadd figured out we need to copy the conf directory from the muimplayer install to the liveforit version, and bingo.... it works.

liveforit, I was excited today to download your latest version with ARexx support enabled. I tested it with VideoClipper, and it works great when controlled by that program. The composition mode allows me to play 720p videos on my X1000, and now with VideoClipper I can use your mplayer version to preview the clips before cutting. Appreciate the effort made in this project! I did notice that turning on the OSD gets me a play "triangle" but not a counter, which would be handy in making cut decisions when editing.

But.... I know this is a work in progress, so I'll be patient. :)

My playback results are same: I can play 1280x720 H264 files that are 24fps without problems. 30fps versions in H264 do not allow the audio and video to be in sync and audio finishes first.

If I transcode clips to MJPEG codec, I can play 30fps in sync at 720p without problem.

Addendum to last post: I just used ffmpeggui to re-render a camera clip with mjpeg and can achieve 30fps playback with 1280x720 and comp mode with that rather easy-on-the-hardware codec. I am trying increasingly larger bitrates to see what I can get away with. Fun stuff.... :)

I am very encouraged by the forward movement here and pleased with the new capability these advancements have brought to my X1000. Playing movies downloaded from the Internet is cool, but I am also interested in processing and editing videos on my X1000. I have professional tools on my Macs for this and use those daily in my work, but as an Amiga hobbyist I also want to play with some video stuff under AmigaOS.

The composition output mode in the liveforit mplayer beta is letting me play 1280x720 videos that are 24fps and keep sound sync. At 30fps, I am losing sync. CPU load is around 60 percent. (To contrast, with cgx_wpa mode, the CPU is saturated and the video plays horribly.)

So where I'd like to be is using a program like Kevin's VideoClipper to arrange, cut and join video clips that I produce into the desired order, then output to 1280x720 using a codec that looks decent but keeps the bitrate down to something we can play.

So... I've done some testing this week with all this stuff and with my cameras, and I've been able to make 720p videos on my X1000 that are more than good enough for YouTube. Very cool.

KTadd's VideoClipper needs to control MPLayer with AREXX, so hopefully a version will be coming that has both comp mode and AREXX.

Next thing to consider.... If I understand what's going on here this comp mode is really the first time we've been able to leverage some power of the GPU for playback. I have a Radeon HD 6850 card in my X1000. If I am right on the edge with capability now (can do 24fps but not 30fps @720p for example), might a higher end card help with that? Like a Radeon HD 6970 or 6950? Those are still pricey, but I see some used offerings that are tempting.

Don't mean to get the card too far ahead of your horses, gentlemen! Your work is being watch and tested and appreciated by folks who aren't even active in this thread, I know!

Thanks! Good tip.... turning off loopfilter did allow that one problematic video I was testing to play smoothly and in sync with the audio.

Nothing too careful or scientific about my methods, I don’t guess… but here are my findings. :)

Tonight I downloaded the beta3 version of liveforit’s build and played some movie files in resolutions and formats that heretofore brought my X1000 to its knees under AmigaOS. Things are getting better!

These were all with composition selected as output.

A 1280x544 mkv file in h.264 (the movie “Peyton Place”) played back fairly smoothly with a few stutters but sound stayed in sync.

A 1280x694 mkv file in h.264 (the movie “The Paper”) played back smoothly and sound stayed even — did not gain or lose. But sync seemed to lag … lips did not QUITE match but close. It got no worse out of sync and might not have bothered someone unless he was as picky as me.

A 960x720 mkv file labeled as x264 played smoothly but the sound was terribly out of sync. This was the 1950 movie “Union Station” and so was not a widescreen aspect ratio, but source was Blu-ray rip and so it used the full 720 resolution in height. This was not at all watchable because of the audio sync.

I look forward to testing some more! I think this is showing a lot of promise. I never saw my X1000 play back high-def video as well as the first two examples here without having booted into Linux. I hope you guys don’t hit the wall too soon. :)

ADDENDUM: I played a part of another old movie, "Johnny Guitar," at 960x720 and playback was smooth and sound perfectly in sync. That made me doubt my observation about the "Union Station" playback so I retested that one -- still out of sync. Must be something about that file.

Odyssey 1.23 Release 2 is working very well on my X1000. Really fantastic job with this project! I really wish everything in Amigaland moved so fast as this effort has. It was money well spent for the bounty to secure the source.

By the way, I enabled the YouTube Fullscreen Fix script and even though I cannot do overlay with my RadeonHD card (alas, sigh) this script does seem to have the pleasant side effect of making more videos play in the HTML5 viewer. Before, it was a crapshoot.

Still trying to stress out this program by visiting every site on the Internet that caused me grief with past versions, but so far in my testing it has performed to exceed expectations and bring a smile. :)
