Re: Beta testing

Could someone PLEASE make a proper news item here (and maybe over at aw.net) about Qt 4.7 (0.9.0)??? I can't believe that this absolutly fantastic, major achievement is only communicated indirectly in some beta testing thread here!

I just installed the archive on my Pegasos II a few minutes ago and write this with the included Browser - wow! I'm completly flashed by this release!

Alfkil (and all you beta testers here): Excellent job!

Re: Reaction OWB better than MUIOWB?

I never "switched" to MUI OWB, Jörg's OWB is still my main browser in version 3.31 (!!!). Enhanced with Clipdown and OWBUtilities.

It's often faster (at least it feels faster), more stable and has the faaaaar better font rendering than any other AmigaOS browser. Netsurf 3.0 is the second browser I use regularly - it performs nicely with my low end AmigaOS 4.1 system (Sam440ep).

Edit: Oops.

@alfkil

I *assume* the system assign "SOBJS:" is done by some semi-secret internal Exec or DOS mechanism on boot up.

- It is definately *not* done in the "startup-sequence"!
- This assign seems to be set up as an "assign SOBJS: DEFER", which means it is "activated" upon first use.
- You can *not* "assign ... ADD" an additional path to an DEFERred assigns, like you would like to do! (You can try this yourself manually in a shell!).
- You might circumvent this behaviour (is it as designed or a bug?) by doing for example a simple "CD SOBJS:". Afterwards it is a "normal" assign and you can add additional pathes to it.

"Sys:Classes/ToolbarImages/Contrib/"

At least in AmigaOS4.1-world this isn't supported anymore since ... I suppose OS4.1 Update 1 (I'm not sure). The only assign left for "tbimages:" is "SYS:Prefs/Presets/tbimages".

You might ask Fredrik Wikstrom/salass who implemented an "Autorun" feature already. See OS4Depot.

Netfs expects to find it's components (netfs-server at least) in "AmiTCP:bin/". So you need to construct such an assign. Me has a "Bin" drawer in my "SYS:" partition, so my "AmiTCP:" assign points to "SYS:". You may choose any other place as long as you are able to serve the "AmiTCP:Bin" structure to Netfs.

That's strange, I use Envoy with all my AmigaOS systems (3.9 and 4.1).

You could also try the good old netfs, works as well (but zero security). For accenssing with my old XP netbook I also installed Samba/smbfs on all machines, so I have at least three variants of network connection protocols running.

Re: why text non-aligned ?

Maybe I'm wrong, but a lot of the so-called "GUI" preferences (including the three fonts you found there) are more or less preferences for the Reaction GUI sub system. And those are of course *not* the same as the general font preferences you'll find in Prefs/Font.

Of course this is confusing, but it's exactly the same concept for MUI as well. Go to MUI prefs and you'll find a myriad of singular font preferences throughout every obscure single class installed. Even worse than "GUI" prefs. Both are another part of our legacy, *sigh*.

Yep, the whole bunch (wiki, amigos.net, forum and everything else) seems to be fragged. I was just browsing the Wiki pages searching for some EasyRequestArg references...gosh.

Re: AVD Pre-Release

@ChrisH

This is why I said "debacle" (and not "scam") because I never ever assumed they did things on purpose. Regarding PageStream I can at least say I got a full working copy of PageStream 4 Pro and a more or less stable native 5.0.3.3 beta, which is actually usefull to some extent. Some report that specific later versions are working as well (but I haven't tried them).

I was only astonished about that pre-pay scheme - and I am/was really curious whether someone really got his hands on a - at least partly - working release of AVD. I use his SDKBrowser often and really like it. We have CodeBench already - nevertheless it would have been nice to see another feature rich IDE beneath Cubic and CodeBench.

AVD Pre-Release

While stompering around on Jamie's website I discovered this one:

http://bitbybitsoftwaregroup.com/fdsp/newpaymentplans.php

Never heard of a "Pre-Release" scheme for AVD. Did anyone really spent 200 bucks here? And what did someone get for that? A working development environment or a coupon?
While his presentation of AVD at AmiWest looked rather nice and the screenshots show potential I suppose development has ceased since 2006...on the other hand he claims to be a X1000 betatester which would be a perfect playground for his toolings...sigh. Reminds me of the PageStream 5 debacle.

Ah, ok, thanks! This and the temporary change of panel position to reach the obscured window scaling gadgets did the trick!

Re: What GIMP?

I just downloaded and installed Gimp 2.6.11. Sadly there seems to be some problem in positioning and opening the softwares multiple windows. While on my Sam440ep (1280x1024) everything opens just nice where it should, the initial windows positions on my PegasosII and X1000 (1600x900) are completely out of range:
- the window positions are somewhere down on the left side, only the upper quarter of them visible.
- the windows are much to high; even if I rearrange the windows positions to the top of the desktop I can't rescale them, 'cos the resizing gadgets are still off screen at the bottom.
- Gimp doesn't seem to remember my settings and reopens it's windows at the left down part of the desktop again...

Semi-Off-topic:
- Further there seems to be some minor hassle with my X1000/RadeonHD setup: The bottom start/icon bar is always to wide, the clock is only partly visible. The Pegasos II with the same resolution/9250 works perfectly in this regards.

Re: Changing system language Possible ?

AFAIK the preferred language list works like a "fallback language list". If the first preferred isn't available, the next in the list is choosen. I.e. Someone might have "Danish" as the preferred language and if it is not available it will choose "Swedish" as the next one...and so on...
