Re: SuperMethaneBros - 1P Fire Button (Right Alt) No Response - x5000 4.1 FE

@m1nuto
Try running this command:
nvsetvar keymap_swapaltamiga "on"

Then run this again, and see what it says:
nvgetvar keymap_swapaltamiga

If it displays something this time, then try hard resetting to see if they Alt & Amiga keys are swapped.

BUT if it doesn't display anything, then nvsetvar isn't supported on the X5000 (it doesn't work on the X1000), in which case you will need to find out how to set firmware variables from the firmware (i.e. before OS4 loads).

Re: A small Shuffle bug with TuneNet

@broadblues
I'm not asking TuneNet to play a NEW track: I'm starting it, with the expectation that it'll resume the last track it was playing. If I wanted it to play a new track, I'd click the Next Track button...

FWIW, WinAmp remembers the last track that was playing, even if Shuffle is enabled.

A small Shuffle bug with TuneNet

If I have Shuffle turned off, then the next time I start TuneNet it remembers which track I was last playing.

BUT, if I have Shuffle turned on, then the TuneNet just picks a new random track the next time it is started. (This is probably why, until recently, I didn't notice that TuneNet (sometimes!) remembers which track it was last playing.)

Any chance this can be fixed?

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the fact that OS4.1 is trying to use the Right Alt as the Amiga button

So fix this issue, and then see if it helps your gaming issue

Which Amiga do you have? (And does it use UBoot?) Never mind, I see you mention an X5000 in the title. (Which does use UBoot.)

If you open a Shell, and enter the following command, what does it output (if anything) :
nvgetvar keymap_swapaltamiga

P.S. Does your keyboard have a Right "Menu" or "Windows" key, next to the Right Alt key? If not then it might be an idea to buy a keyboard which DOES have one. I recommend this one:

(UK specific, and currently unavailable, but maybe you can find a suitable newer model, etc)

It is enough to see how that amiga port of firefox ends up.

Timberwolf worked quite well, just very slow - but this was expected due to lack of optimisation (and _would_ have been fixed later, once all bugs fixed).

Not saying that a Firefox port would be a good idea *now*. Firefox is currently in a state of very heavy flux (not good for us), and now depends quite heavily on Rust (which would also need porting). OTOH, since OS4 is moving towards using NGFS as it's primary filing system, getting Timberwolf working reliably might be easier now (no need to worry about database behaviour on several different filing systems, just NGFS).

Probably Odyssey would be the least amount of effort to get good results. (It 'only' needs Endian issues of JavaScript/etc fixing in WebKit. And it sounded like BigFoot got very close, before running out of spare time and/or motivation.)

I've discovered a problem with Tunenet. If certain videos start playing at WEB sites in Odyssey, Tunenet stops playing and has a semi-frozen GUI. ... I retested several times by going to what I thought was a news item here:

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/un ... ments-site-184419682.html

.. That would seem to indicate that it's a Tunenet problem.

I'm using an X5000 with OS4.1update1 and only a few programs installed from the Enhancer package (like TuneNet, Multiviewer etc.).

Can anyone else reproduce the problem and can we get this fixed

No, works fine for me, on my X1000. Well, the main video at the top of the page fails to load, but a smaller video lower down does play (when scrolled into view), and TuneNet continues to happily play.

I suggest your problem has two possible causes:

1. Very high CPU usage upsetting TuneNet - shouldn't happen, but there could be a bug (race condition) in TuneNet. Check your CPU usage when on that web page, and maybe try reproducing that without Odyssey?

2. Odyssey (video playback) causing memory corruption, which TuneNet just happens to be sensitive to (due to it's memory allocation patterns), at least on your machine (with what is already loaded into memory). Not TuneNet's fault in that case.

I like AmiDevCPP, but wanted a much more supportable/plug-in/build-from-source alternative that didn't bundle in any IDE.

Admittedly my use of AmiDevCPP is a bit perverse: I only use the GUI as a quick way to test compile single executables (completely ignoring the rest of the IDE), and I managed to circumvent the GUI entirely, so that I can cross-compile multiple programs for multiple OSes from the command line using a single 'script'...

I wonder if your cross-compiling approach could be used for other Amiga flavours (OS3, MOS & AROS) ? (I don't even have the time to look-at / experiment-with your approach at the moment, so just idle speculation.)

Oh yeah, I see what you mean. Very jerky.

I assume it's a side-effect of an attempt to fix another problem. They should at least double the 'frame rate', for it to look somewhat acceptable (although ideally it would run smooth like it used to, if that can be done without causing problems elsewhere).

http://www.amigans.net/modules/xforum ... id=108076#forumpost108076

Maybe it would be better to create a new thread for it, rather than 'hiding' it half way down the second page of a thread?

It also might make sense to put it in the Development/AmigaOS4 forum (rather than the general OS4 forum that thread was on) :
http://www.amigans.net/modules/xforum ... SC&sortname=f.forum_order

P.S. I myself use the AmiDevCpp compiler on Windows, as it supports all Amiga flavours... however, the developer seems to have no time to support it these days, so it's slightly broken on Windows 10 (only the Windows-executable compiling side, but that's a problem for me when I want to compile executables for all OSes that PortablE supports, so I'm going to have to try to fix it at some point; it may just need updated GCC executables, as the ones it has are really really ancient). (I also suspect that it won't get updated to support AROS's v1 ABI (esp 64-bit), so it'll eventually be useless for AROS.)

I didn't intend to imply it was! But IMHO it's the best improvement (apart from possibly enabling Shuffle not immediately jumping to the next track - was really annoying & non-standard).

One thing disapoints me is the the lack of fluidity of the bars (in the settings tab) when playing music. It used to be really smooth before A-Eon changed it. Now it is slow (as if it was running at 5 or 10fps).

Do you mean the Radio/General tab in Prefs? (FWIW, it looks fine on my X1000, although I tend not to notice that kind of thing anyway.)

I just noticed that latest version of TuneNet (Enhancer version) seems to remember the last track it was playing. Either I didn't know this had been added, or I forgot (more likely!).

Anyway, this 'small' addition is a REALLY great usability improvement. (It was one of the main reasons I was thinking of writing my own music player.)

Re: Prefs->Url, dumb it down
Home away from home

@mritter0
My suggestions for improving Prefs/Url are to get rid of the need to double-quote stuff, as it just causes masses of confusion. It should be pretty easy to automatically add/remove escaped quotes (and an extra enclosing quotes). Also, provide %u which contains the whole URL (i.e. not missing the http:// etc bit).

The multiple HTTP/HTTPS/WWW sections is also a real pain for the common case. However, it is occasionally useful. e.g. I added option for direct playing of YouTube videos ONLY to HTTPS, since that's always used for YouTube. Not sure there is a perfect solution, without breaking backwards compatibility...

edit:
Probably there should be only ONE web browser section, BUT with support for pattern matching. Then you can have something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/* -> AppDir:YT "%u"
* -> AppDir:OdysseyLauncher2 "%u"

Not backwards compatible though...

edit:
I guess it could be made compatible though. Have a new prefs format, and then upgrade the old one, converting the HTTP tab to use the http://* pattern, FILE tab to use the file://* pattern, etc. End result would be a bit ugly, but at least would work unchanged. (And a new prefs format could completely get rid of the need to escape quotes, etc.)

P.S. The "YT" executable was included in the last YT release, but sadly hidden in Tools/YT_launcher.lha, so most people won't even notice it's there :(

I'm years late in replying(!), but am hoping it might be useful for other people:

I bought one of these ages ago from AmigaKit:
http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/c ... _info.php?products_id=158

Worked great in my Sam440, and now tested as working well in my X1000 with OS4.1 FE. But in the latter case I installed the latest prism2 (v2) drivers, rather than using those supplied by AmigaKit (ages ago).

I had previously manually installed new firmware in it (using a Windows PC), so that I could use WPA/WPA2 (rather than just WEP), and I can confirm this works great! I was able to use WPA2 to connect to both my home router's WiFi AND my phone's WiFi (in portable hotspot mode).

@Chris
The latest prism2 (v2) drivers work fine for me on my X1000 with OS4.1 FE. I am using it with one of these (albiet with manually updated firmware, as you may recall) :
http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/c ... _info.php?products_id=158

I didn't know that WirelessManager shows a page of text, because I run it from my S:Network-Startup as the installation instructions advise:
Run <>NIL: C:WirelessManager prism2.device

You may wish to create a new "Wireless.prefs" file, by executing this command from the Shell:
wpa_passphrase "Your SSID Name" "Your Password" >ENVARC:Sys/Wireless.prefs

For some reason this command isn't installed by the installer, but it IS included in the installation archive (for use by the installer). So just copy it to your Sys:C folder first.

P.S. Beware that the WiFiSignal utility does not work with the v2 driver, and in fact crashes my machine.

P.P.S. Make sure you are not running the "SetPrism2Defaults" command in a start-up script somewhere, as that was removed for the v2 drivers, and I have NO idea if it will stop the v2 drivers from working.

It's a shame that AmigaKit does not supply them with the updated firmware, because it's hard to do, but once you've done it once it's easy to do again.

Re: a SDL version or E-UAE/RuninUAE question
Home away from home

@outrun1978
I don't have time to look at your Blog article closely, but I did notice a problem:

Quote:
The configuration file for E-UAE that comes as standard with Amiga OS4.1 Final Edition is is set up for running an Amiga 500 classic set up  as standard, so as we want to re-create a 68040 based machine machine the next step is to play around with the .uaerc config file.

You are correct about the purpose of the .uaerc file, but you are INcorrect about needing to change it. RunInUAE *already* comes with a second config file (.uaerc_RunInUAE), whose almost sole purpose is to modify it (the first config file) to boot as a 68040 AGA Amiga.

By doing what you propose (changing the .uaerc to 040) you are removing the ability for RunInUAE to provide good A500 game compatibility (when booting floppy disk ADF images).

Also, the second config file will override the first one, so some changes to the first will have no effect, while RunInUAE will continue to modify the second for many settings (via it's menus) leading to all sorts of confusion if you try to manually edit the config files.

edit: Most likely there is no reason for you to be editing the ".uaerc" file at all, and the only (probably very few) changes needed should be made to the ".uaerc_RunInUAE" file.
