New version of Quake (v2.40) available
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

I just uploaded a new version of Quake to OS4Depot. Since I didn't realise that there was a newer 2.30 version on AmiNet than the 2.20 version I fixed last time (which I released as version 2.21), I re-applied my changes to the 2.30 version, plus made a couple of other changes and fixes which will hopefully resolve the problems some have reported.

The MUI-GUI is of course included in 2.40 and it should work now in higher resolutions too, like 1680x1050 (although framerate will likely be quite low in such a resolution), on a Pegasos2/G4 it works at reasonable speeds (25+fps) at resolutions of up to 1024x768. On a Sam you get around 25fps in 800x600 resolution.

Adding an ugly hack like Andrea did in the OWB Blastoise port would be very easy, but I wont do that in the current version, either I'll implement the downloads correctly (incl. the missing DownloadDelegate, etc. methods), or not at all.

While I agree that it should be done properly, in the meantime it would sure make it easier to add a simple 'Save Target As' option in the context menu which would bring up an ASL requester for saving. It would be nicer than having to load all the binary data into the page as garbage, every time somebody wants to save data.

I just tried it and my net banking finally works with OWB, it didn't work with any of the previous versions, so good stuff!

I'm also delighted to see that gif anims also work now.

However the default FONTHINTER still makes the fonts look blurry, I have to adjust the FONTHINTER tooltype to FONTHINTER=0 to make the fonts look nice and sharp, I think FONTHINTER=0 should be default.

I'll be looking at the screen resolution issues and I'll be merging with version 2.30 which is on AmiNet. I don't know about window mode, maybe it's not difficult to do. We'll see.

Does this version of Quake support CD AUDIO ?, if yes how do i enable it ?

Good question, according to the History text, there is some untested one, but all I did was to take the original sources from Frank, made some fixes, and released a fixed version, so I don't know anything more than what is in the included text. There should be some kind of a Readme file, but there wasn't one in the original 2.20 archive that was on OS4Depot.net.

Something interesting: I did some benchmarks (with -notriplebuffer doing a 'timedemo demo1'), and on the Sam440-667 it is 35fps, while on the Pegasos2-G4-1Ghz, it is 50fps. I find this very surprising, because this means it's only 42% faster on the Peg2 than on the Sam, even though the clock speed of the Pegasos2 is 50% higher, and there is also an L2 cache on the Pegasos2, which the 440EP does not have. And this is pure CPU rendering, so it is very surprising that it performs so well on the Sam.

There is already a glQuake on OS4Depot.

@Kicko

What wide resolution was that? The rendering routine of Quake processes 32 pixels in a loop, and does not handle the case when the width is not a multiple of 32, in which case you might get a smear kind of an effect (with each line offset some pixels horizontally), is that what you have experienced?

I don't have an AmigaOS 4.0 installation anymore to check. However I do recommend you to set up a second boot partition and do a fresh install of AmigaOS 4.0 on it. I'm sure quake ran fine on my AmigaOS 4.0 system, and I did not make any changes to the startup code where it crashes for you.

It must be for SAM only; totally unusable here -- A1-XE/G4 and Rad-9250. It kind of resembles TV's sync lock problem. ?
The old version always worked fine with PowerColor7000 and 9250.

Heh, no it's not Sam-only, and it was tested to run fine on an A1-XE/G4@933 and a Radeon 9250SE, as well as on a Pegasos2 with Radeon 8500. Works fine in all cases. I deliberately did not compile it with the latest SDK, but the one before it which was well proven.

Is it possible that you either:

1. Run with too low stack
2. Don't have INTERRUPT=Yes set in your Devs:Monitors/Radeon tooltypes?

What exactly happens? What if you run it with the -notriplebuffer option?

@smf

According to the crashlog you posted, it seems to be crashing here:

if ((UtilityBase = OpenLibrary("utility.library",36)) == NULL || (LowLevelBase = OpenLibrary("lowlevel.library",36)) == NULL)
Sys_Error("Cannot open utility/lowlevel. OS4.0 required");

So it seems to be a problem with opening either lowlevel.library or utility.library there. Are you sure you have an OS4.0 final system with all the updates correctly installed that were available?

I never tried broadcasting with TuneNet, I would recommend you to write an email to the author, hopefully he can help you.

@nubechecorre

Nice catch, I have 1000000 stack size by default, so I never encountered the stack problem, I guess I should add a stack cookie to the game to ensure that if the stack it too small it gets enlarged.

@Murakami

I'm a bit puzzled by your problem, because the game was tested on Sam440, Pegasos2 and AmigaOne machines running 4.1. Is there anyone else here with a microA1 who could test? Another question: Do you have all the data files in place, and what filesystem(s) do you use?

For those who are interested, there's a new version of Quake available on OS4Depot which fixes some nasty bugs, has some optimizations, triplebuffering, and now works perfectly on Sam440 too.

It runs very nicely in 640x480 on a Sam440, "timedemo demo1" gives around 34-35fps.

Do you have AHI set up to a suitable mode for both "Music Unit" and "Unit 0" ?

Re: OWB 3.4

@joerg

I do have a suggestion. now that OWB has a built-in bookmark function, would it be possible to have the bookmarks accessible via menu? E.g. a menu item called 'Bookmarks' that would contain two items "Add Bookmark" and "Manage Bookmarks", then a separator bar, followed by the list of bookmarks that could be picked from the menu to load the bookmarked pages.

Also I noticed that when I'm on a page, and press the 'Add bookmark' button many times, it adds the same URL to the bookmark list many times. It might be a good idea to check if a URL is in the bookmark list already to prevent the same URL to be added several times.

@joerg

Excellent release, nice and smooth, love the context menus, although it would be better if it worked with the right mouse button like it usually does on other browsers. OWB is getting more usable with every release, I'm very much looking forward to file transfer and tabs.

The M9 has hardware acceleration for MPEG1/2 but I don't think it'll be needed to get DVDs to play at full speed.
