Re: RAID and AmigaOS 4.0

@All

Btw, atm I use MirrorCopy as a kind-of RAID 1 mirror system, with Docket to manage some ARexx scripts to do the sync.

Contact GuruMeditation for beta-testing if you didn't already.

Beta-testing for what? I'm sorry but I'm surely missing something here...

The 'RAID' DOSType is just there because I forgot to remove it from the diskcache.library versions included in AmigaOS4 final and the AmiNet SFS archives, sorry. It was only supposed to be in beta versions for testing software RAID (currently 0, 1 and 5).

Sound interesting.

There is no AmigaOS4 driver for hardware RAID controllers, the sii0680, sii3114, etc. are not hardware RAID controllers, it's just a software RAID implementation their, on the AmigaOne unused, BIOS supports as well as the included windows drivers.

I know. The SiL 3114 I have is not even software RAID enabled.

@Swoop

Of course not. When files and dirs are moving, there are not moving physically on the disk, as it takes about 2 seconds to move an entire install. back to its dir. and again about 2 seconds to move the install you want to SYS:.
Then you reboot.

So 4 seconds to change the system + a reboot, I don't think that is difficult or long to do.

Edit: double post

Maybe I can test it for you, I have 3 or 4 disks here collecting dust.

So I have to make 4 dirs on DH0 and put each installation
on its corresponding dir?

I have to stay secure to make 2 or 4 systems running at the same time.

Once I install all does the computer responds to OS 4.0 Final or does it respond to all the versions installed?

In other words does the system use the more appropiate
version of OS 4.0 in order to get the best results?

When I know these things I can install both versions at once.

1) Yes, 4 dirs, one installation in each.

2) This is secure because only the install in SYS: is running. You do not have to bother tweaking Kickstarts ou priorities.

3) Of course not, see 2). It boots only the system that is in SYS:

4) Here are the list of my SYS: on DH0:. The 4 ones are where I store each installations.

.Final (empty at the moment because on the root of SYS:)
.Final+July
.Final+Update4
.Update4
C
Classes
DEVS
Fonts
...
Tools.info
Utilities.info
WBStartup.info

So, when I want to test for ex. Update4, I move all files and dirs from SYS: to .Final, and move all files and dirs from .Update4 to SYS:. Of course the 4 dirs (beginning with a point always stay in the root of SYS:).
Hope this is more clear now.

@MamePPCA1

I have an Update4, a Final, a Final+Update4 and a Final+July installations here.
What I have done is put each full installation in its dir. somewhere, backup (move) the current install and move the install you want to SYS: and then reboot. This is much simplier than tweaking the kickstart but takes some disk space.

Edit: forgot to say that it takes 3 clicks to change the installation (2 move and 1 reboot).

You obviously haven't red this thread from the beginning. The 12 seconds is between the 'Loading done...' message and the Workbench to actually appear. it's not the time for a hard reset.

@Snuffy

For the moment I have just one HDD (500GB) and one DVD burner. Both are recognized without any problem.
Next week, I will received 2 more HDDs. I expect no trouble when connected (I could even put 3 more but there are only 4 places in the case...).

@TSK

Only what OS4 final has installed, I think. Fully loaded = what is usually inside :
WBStartup: AutoUpdateWB, CapsLockStater, TitleClock, BenchTrash, RAWBInfo, DefIcons, AsyncWB, AmiDock, ClickToFront, DepthToFront, ContextMenus

Edit: WBStartup

Re: Long boot time OS4 Final

@Snuffy

I was probably not clear: what I meant is that now system takes 12 sec. to Workbench while with timeouts set at 10 sec. everywhere in UBoot it takes about 50 sec. All timeouts are now at 0 sec. and so it now boots in 12-14 sec. with WBStartup/User-startup fully loaded. Sorry for not being clear enough.

So you're and Swisso are the only mortals who sport that speed on their A1 atm

Enjoy
Jack

The speed difference (between 1,033 and 1,266MHz) is noticeable in update4, but in OS4Final the main speed gain comes from the new memory system OS4 has. I can say that, now (Final+July), one of my ARexx scripts (1.5MB) is opened in less that 1 second while in Update4 it tooks 3-4 seconds to load. But the system is now more strict with programming error...I get ARexx crash the system really easily.

But the system is really fast now.
