Re: KVM Suggestion

@OldFart

How would you feel about actually testing it out? Do you have an X5 and an X1? Uboot/CFE would be interesting.

Thanks so far.

It would be important that it also doesn't have any weirdness during the bootup menu, if I ever need to get into that.

KVM Suggestion

Any suggestion for a 3 way K(V)M switch? I do not care about video, actually. I think @kas1e has done this sort of thing before and I think for the AmigaOne machine a powered KVM is the better solution?

Problem solved.

From Enhancer the "Firmware" directory _MUST_ be copied to SYS:. Serial debugging to the rescue, as always.

I just want to mention that I appreciated A-EON's Enhancer, but that I prefer to most minimal installation!

Re: Emotion I/O Error

Well. I found it in version AmiSSL-4.3 which gets passed that problem, but now leads to https://www.amigans.net/modules/newbb/ ... id=157898#forumpost157898 - which I think is a problem on my end with some sort of missing library. Probably caused by being very cautious about which components of Enhancer I want to install.

Still. I am confused as to why my version is asking for v111a instead of v111m.

The adventures never end :)

I still run into the I/O error. I can see the following calls that fail:
02065 ramlib          FAIL = [execFindResident("amissl_v111a.library") [16uS]
02066 ramlib          FAIL Lock("LIBS:AmiSSL/amissl_v111a.library",SHARED) [4147uS]
02067 emotion decode thread FAIL = [execOpenLibrary("LIBS:AmiSSL/amissl_v111a.library",4) [4219uS]

It looks like "amissl_v111a.library" is needed. This is not the same as the ones talked about in the linked provided above which is "amissl_v111m.library". I do not know where to find this file.

I am running version 5.25 of AMISSL.

I am installing from scratch. This is wrt. X5000:

I have a video file (FILE output from Amiga):
mov.H264.AAC.mp4ISO MediaMPEG v4 systemversion 1

FILE output from Linux:
ISO MediaMP4 Base Media v1 [ISO 14496-12:2003]

When trying to play it with Emotion I get:
EE radeon_uvd.c:1285 si_common_uvd_create_decoder UVD Can't init command submission context.

RadeonRX.chip 2.11 (26/01/2022)

va.library 1.11 (28/12/2021)

RadeonRX_drv_video.library 1.11 (28/12/2021)
20211228.140907

I removed the RadeonHD_drv* file, even though there is no need...

In Emotion:

Can someone provide me with a location to video that I can test with Emotion that would prove that I have everything set up properly?

InfiniteIcons consumes too much space by default
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

I appreciate the work involved in InfiniteIcons. I have bought it. But the amount of space it requires is not acceptable. There needs to be further options in the installer or, at the least, some text in the ReadMe that states the amount of space required.

A lot of people have a fairly small system partition. Going forward, for anyone wanting to use InfiniteIcons, they will need to create a system partition of somewhere near 4/5GB, at least.

There should be more options to deselect some of the default installations. It seems like it is just installing absolutely every combination and this means that there is a lot of wasted space. If, instead, the installer asked the user what general theme of icon they wanted, then masses of space could go un-wasted.

As with any installation in the Amiga world, it is not really possible to uninstall everything that has been installed after finding out that the system partition is full.

Thankfully, I am in the process of messing around with a new system installation so this is not too much of an issue for me.

I will now have to consult the installation scripts to find out what I need to remove. Not ideal but no big loss.

I guess an alternative is to install it all to the non-system partition and then pick and choose what you want; again, this should be handled by the initial installer.

Of course, another alternative is that users are expected to have large system partitions but for a lot of Amigans this goes against the grain.

===

Recommendations:
- State how much space is required in the ReadMe
- Allow selections for the user during installation in order to reduce installation space on the system partition; again, I have not looked into this but if the installer installs the the black icons, the blue icons, the yellow icons, the red icons... then create a selection box
- Create an option to uninstall the installed files in the installer

===

Even when installing to a different partition, the installer installs things to the system partition. Backdrops are installed into the system partition, whether you like it or not. The backdrops take a lot of space.

===

Again, thank you for the work. Hopefully we can improve the installer going forward. The icons are wonderful!

Re: Updating system

- you had AmigaOS Update 1 installed.
- you attempted to update to Update2 FE2. During the installation you attempted to update the kicklayout file but "it crashed".
- you could no longer boot into WB, presumably because of not being able to update the kicklayout file.
- you could no longer boot into the boot menu because of the keyboard.
- the HDD was found not to be good.
- there was confusion with which format the HDD should be.
- you CAN boot into WB using the flash drive IF the HDD is disconnected.
- then, the thumb drive became corrupt.
- you would have preferred a CD.
- you then replaced the battery on the MB and cleaned the components as well as receiving a new flash drive
- but now, the motherboard required SD card is corrupt.

That is quite a journey.

Let's see what SERIAL has to say. I am sure we will get there in the end.

Did you ever manage to get into the boot menu?

Also, serial would be good.

Re: Updating system

Hanging on a white screen is what happens when you are using a card that needs the more recent radeon drivers, but the flash drive only has the older one or limited one.

You either have to
1. put the more recent driver on the flash drive or
2. ensure you have an older gfx card.

No one should have to go through this, but it is what it is.

A serial cable is also important since we could confirm that all of this started because of the modification to the kicklayout. It would then also have confirmed that your new issue is the issue with the gfx driver.

Regardless, you will need to boot into the flash drive and so it would be important to know which card you have.

Which gfx card? Could it be that the thumb drive is not using the radeon drivers that support your graphics card?

It's not perfect, but you should have a USB stick at the least with your X5000, and you should be able to boot into the boot menu. Yes, the incompatibility of some keyboards is annoying.

Anyway, that is just my opinion. I see though: it is not particularly user friendly unless all the planets align.

I wouldn't think the boot selector would be effected by changing kicklayout.

Re: Updating system

Somewhere there is an error in the kicklayout and serial output would help. I cannot remember if you can make it show serial output instead of the splash screen.

Easiest would be to boot from some recovery USB / CD and load up your HDD system partition's Kickstart/Kicklayout.
