Trying to update my A1XEG4 to OS4.1 FE
Just popping in
Just popping in

See User information
Long story short: after years of gathering dust I decided to bring my A1XE to life again. It booted fine, so I ordered AOS4.1 FE for it, in order to bring it up to date.

That's what leads me here after all these years: it won't boot from CDROM. I hope someone can help me figure this out, as I've lost a lot of knowledge regarding the A1 and AOS4 over the years.

Debug output, just in case (I can't figure out how to fix the IRQ messages anymore, btw) Also the loadsector messages have me puzzled:

First of all, welcome back
Let's get this beast back to roaring...

I guess you still have your hardware manual?
If not, here: http://intuitionbase.com/a1_xe.pdf

See also here for UBoot stuff, maybe that helps you get back into the game?
http://intuitionbase.com/static.php?section=uboot

First of all you could do a "printenv" on the UBoot prompt?
Maybe your CDRom isn't set up correctly?

Thanks for the welcome .

Yeah, I did find those resources. Didn't help me so far. I've also tried to (re)register at the Hyperion forums, still waiting to be allowed (back) in there.

Also, the battery is fresh (i did remeber that much, lol).

Anyways, here's the printenv:

Booting off the onboard VIA IDE controller is a safe bet in case the 0680 fails.

I remember having trouble with booting off a DVD drive on the 0680 controller, not sure why.

Make sure the VIA controller uses PIO instead of DMA transfers which I think is the default setting on the 4.1FE CD\DVD.

Dank je!

Worth a shot. Not sure whether I have a spare proper cable anymore, but I just might.

Graag gedaan schatje

I assume you're booting off an IDE drive seeing boot1=psiicdrom before ssiicdrom, which case you could unplug the cable from your 0680 card and plug it in the via controller this one time for the update.

Don't think having the harddrive on the same cable would be an issue as long PIO is being used instead of UDMA for the harddrive,
which in Uboot would be the command: setenv "a1ide_xfer 0,0,0,0". which would set best pio for all devices I believe?

(or in AmigaOS: 4.1FE install disc\prefs\uboot)

If you are trying to use a SATA drive then, uhm.. my bad :/

No joy

I did find another cable, used that to connect the CD drive to the primary VIA IDE.

Might be my a1Ide related settings, but after ide reset scanning bus 0 times out. No devices found. I could try another CD drive, but I doubt that's the issue.

How odd, might move my PC to my A1 and capture my environment

Maybe it times out too soon on the VIA controller, your a1ide_timeout is set to 5 seconds, the AmigaOS wiki recommends 30 seconds as that is the ATAPI spec

Oh and uhm, you do have the master/slave jumpers set correctly, right?

One step forward, one step back...

Tried a different CD drive. This one is a Lite-on. It is detected, when connected to the primary VIA port, jumper set to master. My HD is still on the sii0680, as master.

It still won't boot from CD. It still boots from the HDD but...fails to go beyond kickstart. I see modules being loaded but after a bit I get the insert disk screen.

IRQ errors are gone from the debug, but new errors replaced them

Do the unspeakable, remove your hdd and try to boot only from cdrom, that way you'll know if it is even picked up during booting or if it errors out completely.

I'm not sure, but that

I'm jealous

Does the harddrive have a higher boot priority in Partition Wizard?

Also don't miss Raziel's advice incase my post overshadows it..

The garbled hashtag output with your printenv end is very strange, do you use these serial settings?

Unrelated, you have AGP sideband disabled? turn it on that's free performance

Could you once more show us your printenv output?

Also (long time ago, so probably wrong) try this:

setenv a1ide_maxbus 2
setenv boot1 cdrom
setenv boot2 a1ide
setenv boot3 none
saveenv
reset

I can see a typo here
Quote:

aiide_conf=0200

That should probably be a1ide=

Also, i don't know how well UBoot behaves on the settings, but
Quote:

boot1=psii
boot2=psiicdrom

could/should be changed to

boot1=cdrom
boot2=a1ide

just for testing the onboard ide, you can always change it later on

I suspect that it might be a busted ide cable.

Perhaps you could rip the iso on another PC, "burn" it to a USB drive and boot off that.

I've tried 2 different IDE cables. Both yield the same result.

USB is worth a shot, not sure whether that'll work due to the A1 XE usb issues. One USB port is in use by my mouse. I do have a usb -> PS/2 adaptor but if I use that my mouse doesn't work.
